Chapter 238 Farewell, Celebration Banquet, The Taste of the Beautiful Witch and Kael's Pattern (10K)_3
Kael flipped through the notebook after receiving it, noticing that the entries began shortly after Midgar arrived in Lancaster.
Old White's magic power enveloped the notebook, meticulously safeguarding it from any external damage.
For a curse renowned for its invasive strength, achieving this was no easy feat.
Especially as a light rain fell upon the town, yet the tears shed by the sky left not a single mark upon its pages.
"Grandpa White, thank you for your hard work."
The contents of this notebook were mostly expressions of a young man's fondness and hopes for a vibrant young girl.
The written words were not fancy, but they were filled with intense joy.
Just by looking at it briefly, one could imagine a scene.
A young man carefully writing in the darkness of the night, conveying his fervent emotions, then, as the notebook closed, hiding his thoughts deep within a corner of his heart.
"Give this to that girl, and then tell her, 'The dead are gone, the living must move on.'
"Understood."
The rain over the small town had just stopped briefly before pouring down heavily again, as if the world had quieted down at that moment, leaving only the sound of the rain drizzling down.
Some of the townspeople had also arrived, possibly because the site was overwhelmed with too many professionals, making the civilians keep their distance for the time being.
Kael didn't say much, as Old Barry's side had already consigned the first Ranger to the cremation furnace, turning him to dust, leaving Kael little time to tend to the Wolf Cavalry.
He raised his hand, and strands of Magic Silk Thread shot out, spreading like a spider web, instantly connecting to the fragmented remains of the Wolf Cavalry tightly safeguarded by the Gluttonous Slime with their bodies.
It was as if time had reversed, those Wolf Cavalry who were unrecognizable after being overwhelmed by too many Barbarians in fierce battle, were reconstructed into nearly complete corpses.
Suddenly, a murmur of surprise rose from the gathered townspeople.
By then, Kael, with his mastery of human anatomy through Magic Silk Thread, had swiftly sutured the last of the Wolf Cavalry and washed their bodies clean with Water Magic, before finally glancing towards the crowd of residents.
He saw a mother, still relatively young, carefully leading a little girl by the hand, advancing towards the front of the crowd.
She stood on tiptoe, craning her neck, silently and curiously peering towards the obscured inner area, seemingly eager to grasp the situation inside.
"May I go in to see them off?"
The mother whispered, "When the Barbarians came, I was picking herbs by the edge of Lancaster Swamp. A Ranger helped divert them away from me. I just looked around and it seems I couldn't find him."
Kael was not averse to others knowing about the kind deeds his subordinates had done. In fact, he longed for the good acts performed by the Rangers and Wolf Cavalry, as well as all future soldiers under his command, to be recognized.
At the very least, Kael hoped his subordinates would be remembered in another way by everyone.
"Let them through. Most of the wounds that could be treated have been, and the small part that remains... Lady, your child is still young, it would be better not to let her see such things at this age."
The mother nodded and said, "I will cover her eyes."
After speaking, she pulled her daughter along, walking down the path cleared by the tall and burly professionals, quickly scanning and soon identifying the man they were searching for.
Approaching the sleeping body, she placed a flower upon its chest.
Then she lifted her daughter, allowing her to lay down a second flower.
Perhaps inspired by the woman's gesture, the surrounding townspeople began to step forward, hoping to offer a flower of their own.
After pondering for a moment, Kael thought the townspeople harbored no ill will and simply turned aside to let all the residents come forward with their flowers.
Flandre said softly, "The residents of your territory seem quite friendly towards the Rangers and Wolf Cavalry, don't they?"
"It has something to do with the strategies I've implemented... This resource-based town wasn't so large initially. It was built up over time with the combined efforts of the Rangers, Wolf Cavalry, and the townspeople."
Flandre nodded in understanding.
Before long, Kael ended the conversation with Flandre and stood up to address the residents who lingered nearby without leaving after having given their flowers.
The Rangers and Wolf Cavalry stood around silently, and Kael clapped his hands to draw everyone's attention before speaking in a voice that shook slightly with seriousness:
"It's getting late. I would ask the other residents to leave the area in an orderly fashion, as we need to proceed with the final burial rites."
The residents did not block the way but orderly retreated to the perimeter.
As one sacrifice after another was delivered to the furnace, turning to ash amidst batches of the fallen, an unexpected event occurred.
A Gluttonous Slime, which had lost its Symbiotic partner, suddenly broke free from the others' restraints and leaped into the cremation furnace.
