A Sarkaz scavenger looked at the exhausted pack-beast that had collapsed before him, his face full of worry. He moved all the items out of the beast's cart, preparing to continue his wandering alone. But when he looked up, he saw a figure in the distance walking this way.

The newcomer wore a grayish-black cloak and seemed to be carrying no weapons, looking completely harmless. But in a borderland like Kazdel, what kind of normal, harmless person would be here all alone?

The Sarkaz scavenger immediately drew his longsword and shouted at the figure.

"Hey! Stop right there!"

Lucifer stopped walking. Under the wary gaze of the Sarkaz, he slowly pulled back his hood. He stood with his back to the sun. His pale red, reptilian eyes glanced at the scavenger for a moment, then locked onto the beast-drawn cart behind him.

"Hey… comrade. I want to use this money to buy your pack-beast. Are you interested?"

As he finished speaking, Lucifer tossed a bag in front of the Sarkaz. The Sarkaz cautiously used his sword to nudge it open and found it was full of Originium Ingots. Although the amount wasn't large, it was enough to buy his own life. He quickly scooped up the bag of ingots and made way for Lucifer.

"…But this pack-beast is badly injured. It's about to die. Do you still want to buy it?"

The belly of the old pack-beast had a hole blown through it by a spell; it was on its last breath.

"That's none of your business anymore."

"Alright, alright. Then I'll be on my way…"

The Sarkaz clutched the bag of ingots, preparing to flee, but was suddenly stopped by Lucifer again.

"Wait a moment, comrade."

"Uh… you're not thinking of going back on your word, are you?"

Lucifer ignored him, instead posing a new question.

"I just want to know, if you had the money and various conditions for living, and you wanted to find a place to rest and live out your final years, where would you want to go?"

The Sarkaz had never thought that Lucifer would ask him such a question. As an Infected, he had spent most of his life surviving by scavenging in Kazdel. He only knew bits and pieces of rumors about the outside world and had never thought he could live out his old age in peace.

After standing frozen in thought for a long while, he finally gave an ambiguous answer.

"Uh… I'd probably go to a mobile city in the northeast called Lungmen. I've heard other people say it's quite tolerant there. Even the Infected can run a small business and make a living."

Lucifer looked in the direction the Sarkaz was pointing, his mind now made up. When he turned back again, the Sarkaz had already run a fair distance away, afraid that Lucifer would go back on his word and double-cross him.

Lucifer let out a single laugh, then crouched down in front of the dying pack-beast.

"Even though you are just a drifting beast, it's still better than aimlessly counting steps day by day. Please let me make the most use of you, little comrade. After all… this big brother isn't some cruel demon."

Lucifer reached out and gently closed the pack-beast's eyes.

Waiting until its last breath had faded, a massive amount of blood poured into the beast's body, frantically transforming its flesh. Even the parts that had been blasted apart by spells began to grow new tissue.

In just a moment, the pack-beast that could only lie on the ground, struggling on the verge of death, was instantly transformed by Lucifer into an Ascendant Beast.

"Hmm… it looks pretty cool."

Looking at his masterpiece, Lucifer nodded in satisfaction. He climbed onto the cart behind it, and the pack-beast, its form altered by the Blood Demon, set off towards the northeast.
