Chapter 36: Ch-36 Foundation of FTG.
Shanks opened the small cupboard inside his cave and scanned the collection of books neatly stacked within. His eyes once again landed on a particular title: Research on Automatic Summoning Jutsu.
This book had caught his attention a month ago—right before he began studying the role of hand seals in ninjutsu. At the time, it had piqued his curiosity, but he had deliberately set it aside, unwilling to be distracted from his immediate goal of mastering one-handed seals.
But now, with the basics behind him and his focus shifting toward developing a unique ninjutsu of his own, he finally had the time—and the freedom—to explore it.
Shanks pulled the book from the shelf and settled down with it, opening to the first page with genuine interest. As he began to read, his curiosity deepened. The more he read, the more astonished he became. The concepts laid out within the book were complex, unconventional, and full of potential.
He was completely absorbed.
Hours passed unnoticed as Shanks remained engrossed, his mind racing with ideas and possibilities. It wasn't until the sun had fully set and darkness blanketed the valley outside the cave that he finally closed the book.
Sitting on his bed beneath the soft glow of the oil lamp, Shanks leaned back, deep in thought. He silently summarized the contents of the book, committing the key ideas to memory.
So this is how the Flying Thunder God Technique came into existence… he mused. This entire research paper is essentially a theoretical foundation for automatic summoning.
He recalled the first part of the book, which explained the basics of summoning from both ends—the summoner and the summoned. Just like how Jiraiya used the Summoning Technique to call forth the toads from Mount Myōboku, the reverse was also possible. Those toads could summon Jiraiya back to their realm when needed.
If toads can summon a human, then why can't humans summon another human?
That question had eventually been answered. The book described how the process was made possible through seals—one inscribed on the summoner and one on the individual being summoned. These seals formed a unique bond, allowing targeted summoning between two humans.
Later sections of the book took the idea further. It explored the possibility of placing a seal at a fixed location—similar to a summoning circle—where a specific amount of chakra could be stored. The chakra embedded within would act as a beacon, continuously attempting to summon the marked individual.
And the summoned person? They had a choice.
Just like summoned creatures could reject a call, a human marked by this system could either accept or deny the summoning based on their own will.
Shanks sat still for a moment, absorbing the implications. It was more than just theory.
It was a blueprint.
Shanks muttered to himself, "If I can master this technique through continued research, then eventually I'll be able to replicate the Flying Thunder God Technique. That would be a massive leap forward—it would increase my combat capabilities by a huge margin."
He paused, his thoughts sharpening.
For now, I'll start with the human-to-human summoning method. Mastering this technique will be one of my primary goals—right alongside developing my own exclusive ninjutsu.
Another idea crossed his mind.
Maybe I should ask Erza to read this book as well. She's already mastered Enchantment, which is, in essence, a form of sealing technique in Naruto world. With her foundation, she might be able to understand and refine this method even faster than I can. And if she succeeds, that would speed up my own progress too.
Just then, Erza appeared outside the entrance of the cave.
"Onii-chan," she called, "the food is ready. Everyone's waiting for you."
Shanks looked up, surprised but pleased. "Perfect timing. I was just about to call you."
He reached for the book and handed it to her. "Here, take this. Read it carefully, and after three days, let me know what you think."
Erza took the book from his hands and glanced down at the title in the dim cave light:
Research on Automatic Summoning Jutsu.
Her eyes lit with curiosity as she nodded. "Understood."
Shanks looked at Erza seriously. "This book is important—potentially a powerful trump card for all of us. If we're ever in danger or need to escape a situation quickly, this technique could be the key. Read it carefully. I want to know your thoughts once you've had time to digest it."
He paused, then added, "I'd focus more on researching and mastering this myself, but right now my priority is creating an exclusive ninjutsu tailored to my strengths. That's going to take most of my attention. You can also involve the other children in your research if you think they can help. Their input might prove useful."
Erza said, "Okay, Onii-chan, don't worry. After I finish reading this book, I'll tell you everything about what I can do. I might also involve the other children—some of them may be interested." After saying this, she left Shanks' cave.
As Shanks watched Erza leave with the book in hand, a faint trace of regret passed through him.
If only the original Shanks Uzumaki—the one whose body I now inhabit—had taken sealing techniques more seriously...
Before his transmigration into this world, the original Shanks had the potential. He possessed the foundational knowledge to learn advanced sealing techniques, especially as a member of the Uzumaki Clan, known for their unparalleled expertise in the art. But he had preferred raw combat—flashy, direct ninjutsu over the intricacies of seals. He had treated sealing techniques as a secondary skill, something optional rather than essential.
Now, that neglect was a hurdle.
If I already had a deep understanding of sealing, Shanks thought, mastering this human-to-human summoning method would've been far easier. But there's no point dwelling on what could've been. All I can do now is start from the basics and work my way up.
And that's exactly what he intended to do.
At the same time, Shanks knew he couldn't completely complain. His predecessor may have neglected sealing techniques, but he had achieved significant mastery over lightning-style ninjutsu—a strength that would now benefit Shanks greatly in developing his own exclusive jutsu.
You gain something, you lose something, he thought with a faint smirk. That's just how it works.
