Caleb chuckled and could only nod his head hearing what Arthur said. Meanwhile, Pearson nodded his head, "Yeah, sure," and he took two pieces of paper, and handed them over to Caleb. One was a supply list, the other a folded letter. "Here's my list. And, can you post this letter for me? While you were there? Also, don't open the letter, it's a... personal thing."

Caleb rolled his eyes a she let out a smile. "No promises, Pearson."

Pearson heard that chuckles and shakes his head at Caleb's antics, before then he got to continue whatever he was doing.

Arthur saw that Caleb had received the two papers. "Well then come on Caleb, Princess."

After saying that, Arthur walked away, boots crunching softly on the dirt as he headed toward the wagon. Caleb followed closely behind, the two men falling into step in the dappled light of morning filtering through the trees.

But something was off.

Neither of them heard a third set of footsteps that followed behind them.

Curious, they turned to glance back toward Pearson's wagon. There stood Sadie Adler, arms folded, lips tight, glaring at the two men as if daring them to say something.

Arthur gave her a deadpan look. "You comin' with us then, woman?"

Sadie didn't answer right away. For a second, it looked like she might just storm off in the opposite direction, but when Arthur shrugged and turned to leave again, followed by Caleb, she let out a sharp sigh.

"Fine," she muttered, and stomped after them, the hard set of her jaw unmistakable.

They reached the wagon, where Arthur hoisted himself into the driver's seat with practiced ease. Caleb climbed into the back, shifting some old canvas bags to make space. Sadie climbed onto the shotgun seat beside Arthur, crossing her arms and glaring out at the road ahead.

"So I've graduated from chopping vegetables to shopping for supplies now?" she quipped dryly.

Before Arthur could respond, Caleb leaned forward from the back of the wagon, his tone light and sarcastic. "That's true, Mrs. Adler, Congratulations on your graduation. After this, you'll graduate and join us in the ranks of gunslingers!"

Sadie snorted a laugh, clearly appreciating the sarcasm. "Why, thank you kindly, Mr. Thorne, for your honest sarcastic words. I will strive to be the best shopping lady you two have ever seen."

Arthur shook his head and chuckled under his breath. "God help us," he muttered, and snapped the reins. The horses neighed and started forward, pulling the wagon down the dusty trail away from camp.

The morning air was crisp and full of birdsong. As they rolled through the trees, the tall pines eventually giving way to open plains, Arthur glanced sideways at Sadie.

"You cooled down yet, princess?" he asked, smirking.

Sadie turned her glare on him. "I ain't no princess. And I guess I have cooled down. I ain't no scullion, and I as hell ain't takin' orders from that sweating halfwit!"

Caleb laughed, shaking his head. "I get what you're saying, but we all gotta do our share, Mrs. Adler. And that includes takin' orders from Pearson when you're on kitchen duty."

Sadie scoffed, clearly not ready to admit he was right, and stared out at the road. Silence lingered for a moment before her curiosity broke it.

"By the way," she asked, "where's that letter Pearson gave you, Caleb?"

Caleb raised an eyebrow. "Why? Planning to critique his words?"

Arthur meanwhile rolled his eyes. "What? You're readin' his mail now?"

Sadie shrugged, her tone thick with sarcasm. "Oh, so robbin' and killin's okay, but letter readin' is where we draw the line now?"

Caleb chuckled loudly. "She's got a point, Arthur."

Arthur grunted. "Shut up, Caleb."

Sadie leaned back with a grin. "C'mon. Hand it over, Caleb."

With a dramatic sigh, Caleb fished into his satchel and handed her the letter. Sadie took it with theatrical flair and cleared her throat before reading aloud.

"Dear Aunt Cathy," she began in a mock-serious tone.

Arthur groaned. "You are somethin' else, alright."

Ignoring him, Sadie read on. "I haven't heard from you in some time, so I prayed to the lords above that your health hasn't deteriorated further… blah, blah, blah… It's boring as hell."

Arthur chuckled. Caleb grinned, resting his elbows on the wagon rail. He remembered this moment from the game. But somehow, it was better now, more alive, and more vibrant. More real.

"Oh wait a sec," Sadie said, her voice perking up. "Listen to this, 'Since we last corresponded, I have traveled widely. Making no small name for myself.'"

All three of them burst out laughing when they heard this.

Arthur wheezed. "No small name, huh?"

Caleb just shook his head in laughter, "His name was very big alright, so big that he became a cook in the gang!"

Sadie on the other hand continued, "'Before you ask, I am still yet to take a wife, but I can assure you it's not for lack of suitors.'"

Arthur howled with laughter. Caleb slapped the side of the wagon.

"That's the biggest load of horseshit I've heard all week," Caleb said as he laughed.

Sadie wiped a tear from her eye, still grinning. "God, I needed that after being driven crazy by him."

After saying that, Sadie continued her words by saying, "Does he ever actually talk to a woman he ain't paid for?"

Arthur, who was holding back a chuckle, finally let out a few hearty laughs. "Oh, oh, look, we're all hiding behind something, don't be so mean now to Pearson..."

Sadie grinned, clearly pleased at having cracked a joke that landed, and the three of them shared a moment of laughter that helped ease the earlier tension. It was a rare, light hearted camaraderie in a life usually full of chaos and violence.

Then Sadie squinted at the letter and tilted her head in confusion. "And what's this? 'Return to Tacitus Kilgore'?"

Arthur, eyes on the road ahead, responded casually, "Oh, that? Now that's Dutch's idea. All mail is to be sent to the same alias. Whenever we set up somewhere new, Strauss heads into town, tells 'em to start expectin' mail from Tacitus Kilgore or whatever nonsense names Dutch or Strauss dreams up."

Caleb smirked at the mention of the ridiculous alias. He remembered reading that name during the game and how strange yet clever it was as a way of staying anonymous.

As Arthur finished explaining, the town of Rhodes came into view up ahead. The rooftops and signs of the small southern town rose above the horizon, with the train station nestled off to the right. The wagon rolled down the uneven road, hooves clopping rhythmically on dirt and gravel.

Arthur adjusted the reins and nodded toward Sadie. "Here, gimme that letter. We got work to do."

Sadie handed it over without comment, her earlier mischief simmering under the surface. Arthur slid the folded letter into his satchel and steered the wagon in silence as they entered Rhodes. The townsfolk were already out and about, going about their daily business, unaware of the outlaws riding in among them.

Arthur parked the wagon next to the general store. "Okay, here we are," he said, setting the brake.

Caleb had already hopped down from the back. He turned around just in time to see what he knew was coming.

Sadie leaned forward, her voice tinged with a sharp edge of sarcasm. "So? What's the plan? I shoot the shopkeeper while you two do..."

And just like that, she produced a revolver from seemingly nowhere and pointed it upward, ready to cause trouble.

Arthur froze halfway through getting down from the driver's seat and getting back on. "No! You insane?!"

Sadie lowered the gun lazily, unbothered. "Well, I thought we were outlaws..."

Arthur, flustered, pushed her hand down firmly. "Outlaws... Not idiots! We rob fools that rob other people! These folks here, they're just tryin' to get by. So you head on in there with Caleb, buy us some food to eat and supplies to use. And no guns."

Sadie didn't seem all that convinced but nodded anyway as she got down from the wagon.

Arthur got down from the wagon as well from Sadie's side, landing beside her. She raised an eyebrow and asked, "Are you sure?"

Arthur nodded grimly. "This time. There'll be time for killin' soon enough."

Satisfied, Sadie exhaled through her nose and then asked, "So what are you gonna do?"

Arthur tapped the satchel. "Gonna check if there was any mail for us. Also, send Pearson's letter, the one you read out loud. Nothin' excitin'."

As Arthur walked toward the train station, Caleb passed him. Arthur gave him a sideways glance and muttered under his breath, "Keep an eye on her, please, Caleb. Don't let her do anything that draws attention."

Caleb just smirked. "I'll do my best, Arthur. But no promises."

Arthur sighed and walked away, leaving Caleb to his fate.

Caleb joined Sadie as she reached the general store. The bell above the door chimed softly as they stepped inside. The store was lined with shelves packed with food, ammunition, and household goods. A wiry, shopkeeper looked up from behind the counter.

"Help ya folks?"

Caleb handed over Pearson's list with a polite smile. "Need everything on this paper, please."

As the shopkeeper read it over, Caleb leaned close to Sadie and whispered, "We should act like a married couple, Mrs. Adler. You're Mrs. Kilgore. I'm Mr. Tacitus Kilgore."

Sadie blinked and grinned wickedly. "Oh, this is gonna be fun."

"Just don't pull a knife on anyone please Mrs. Adler, we don't want any attention." Caleb muttered.

The shopkeeper returned. "All right, I've got most of this. A couple of things I'll have to fetch from the back."

"Take your time," Caleb said, tipping his hat.

Sadie strolled toward a shelf lined with canned goods. She picked one up and turned to Caleb. "Oh, Tacitus dear, should we get beans or peaches for tonight's supper?"

Caleb leaned on the counter and played along. "Well, Mrs. Kilgore, you know how I feel about peaches."

Sadie rolled her eyes but straightened, forcing a smile. "Yes, I know how you feel Tacutus dear. Oh, also we mustn't forget the flour. The children do love their biscuits."

Caleb nearly choked. The shopkeeper who come out from the back blinked.

"Children?" Caleb managed.

"Five," Sadie said solemnly. "All under ten. Very rambunctious around their age."

The shopkeeper's expression shifted to pity. "Lord bless ya, ma'am. I'll throw in some free peppermints for 'em."

Caleb shot Sadie a glare that promised retribution. She smirked.

Sadie after that placed the can of peaches on the counter and smiled sweetly at the man. "We'll take these. and some of that tobacco too."

"Right away, ma'am."

It wasn't long before the supplies were packed into sacks. Caleb paid with the camp's stash of funds and handed the receipt into his inventory. He and Sadie carried the crate out together.

Arthur had returned and was waiting by the wagon. "Mail sent. Any trouble?"

Caleb shook his head. "Nah. We were model citizens. Ain't that right, Mrs. Kilgore?"

Sadie gave a mock curtsy. "As domestic as a Sunday stew."

Arthur snorted and motioned toward the wagon. "Let's get back. I'm tired of pretending to be civil."

They loaded the supplies, mounted up, and soon the wagon rolled out of Rhodes and back onto the trail toward camp. The sun was climbing higher now, and Caleb was preparing himself as he knew what would happen next, It was fortunate that he brought his Lancaster repeater alongside him as well.
