My quite ordinary punch collapses a thick concrete wall, then with a blast of air I push away the enemy who ambushed me and dodge a hail of bullets, activating time acceleration.

A jet of fire launched forward neutralises two more enemies. Because of the terrain, I'm not very comfortable using earth and water, but the other two elements are enough for those enemies who came out against me.

Abruptly I turn around with my whole body and deliver a few blows to the torso of the enemy, hearing the metal covering it creak. Robots weren't strong opponents, and I was quite capable of dealing with them without any special abilities.

But now there was more of a demonstration than a fight, so it was more about showmanship than efficiency. After dealing with about ten more robots, I smash through the metal door with a sharp blow that heats the skin on my fists.

After that, I calmly walk into the other room, where they were already waiting for me.

- Excellent, Major Kent, just excellent," General Lane said, applauding me and looking at the people standing next to him. There was Semilia and three other men besides him. A scowling Negro woman who looked at me with a slightly threatening look, a man in an austere suit, and a smiling middle-aged man whom I had seen at my award ceremony, not far from the president.

- These results are excellent. They already surpass all members of Task Force X. Your request to create a new group will be accepted, but first I would like to ask you if you have already selected members for it. - The smiling man asked me. I didn't know much about him, mostly just that he was FBI and very close to the president.

- In fact, I've already looked at a couple of metalmen who might be willing to accept my offer to join the squad. And also, one member is already on my squad for sure. Semilia Sternau, a metahuman with unusual abilities," I said, pointing at the girl who stood with a bored expression on her face.

- Oh, and what can she do? - Amanda Waller, the woman who was also standing next to me, asked me irritably. She was the leader of Task Force X and I was her rival, so this attitude is understandable, although I don't like it.

- General Lane, let me borrow your gun for a visual demonstration," I asked the general, to which he agreed without question, to my slight surprise. Immediately afterwards, I simply handed it to Semilia, and she simply nodded.

And while the others waited for her to do something unusual, she simply checked the magazine, and after making sure there was ammo in there, she shot herself. The gun fell out of her hand and her body fell to the ground. I heard a surprised gasp behind me, but before anyone would have started asking questions, Semilia's body moved and she stood up, already fully healthy.

- Amazing, that's true immortality," the smiling man muttered, becoming even happier. After that he looked at me and said something to his attendant, the man in the strict suit.

- We fully approve of your proposal and appoint you as the new commander of the Argent Squad. This squad used to do exactly what you suggested, but it was disbanded. But these are new times, so your offer has been accepted," the man said, shaking my hand and handing me the documents.

And after that, the fun part began, in the form of bargaining and bureaucracy. I signed the paperwork, we talked about funding, and my candidates for the squad, except for Semilia. I told them about Canary, and promised to recruit her, and told them that I was still working on a few candidates, but there was still too little information about them.

The funding I've been given is pretty good, to put it mildly. Advanced weapons, the best equipment, its own base in Metropolis, in addition, each member of the team will be given a flat in a new apartment building, not far from the base. And the flats there are at least premium class.

I liked everything, and now I also have a position in the country is not the smallest. I will actually immediately be issued a new rank, but because of the bureaucracy I will officially be a lieutenant colonel only in a month.

And right after all this was over, Semilia and I were left alone with General Lane.

- You've proved yourself perfectly, Edmund. I'd say no one could have done better. The Chief was thrilled, so he's counting on you, and you'd better not upset him. Even the president discusses a lot of his decisions with him and relies on him a lot," Sam revealed a little truth to me, patting me on the back happily.

- Are you so happy for me, or is there a bonus for you, too? - I asked him with a sly smile.

- Well, I won't hide it, your squad will be based on my base territory, so I will also get perks from all its actions. And just for your attraction already praised me a lot, - he said calmly, relaxed back in his chair.

- Okay, since we're going to your base, when do we leave? - I asked him, also sitting on the couch and taking out a cigarette.

- No light? - The general asked me, and I just lit his cigar with my mind without even moving from my seat.

- Ohh, I'm not used to all these superpowers, but thanks," he said, taking a drag, and then he looked at me again, "We can leave right now. Do you need to get your stuff?

- We just need to stop by the hotel, we don't have much stuff, so it won't take long," I told him.

- Fine, then my driver will give you a lift and then you will go straight to the airport, I will wait for you there," he said, looking at me and Semilia.

After this small conversation I finished smoking and we said goodbye to the general and left the building. We were on a secret range, under one of the US Army offices, so we got to the hotel pretty quickly. Semilia was rather indifferent to all this, calling the whole meeting a mere show-off.

Then everything went by at a fast pace. Airport, flight, acquaintance with the territory, a small study of the area, and ended with the fact that we were brought to our new base. And it looked beautiful. I'm sure they had been preparing it for a long time, maybe even as one of the operational bases for Task Force X.

The whole room looked like it was created in the future, I certainly didn't expect to see anything like this anytime soon, and even on our planet. Everything around me was fascinating and childlike.

- Amazing technology," I said, touching a computer with a holographic screen.- These are all the latest technologies that the best scientists in our country have been able to study. We've been studying a lot of alien technology lately, and brilliant scientists have been developing some fantastic devices for our time," said an older man in a hospital gown as he entered the room.

- Gilbert Ross, I've been assigned here as a technician. It's nice to meet you, Major Kent, I've heard good things about you," he said, coming up to me and extending his hand.

- It's also a pleasure to meet you. I hope our cooperation will be favourable," I replied, shaking his hand.

After that he showed us the whole base, telling us about all the unknown devices. Actually, there were too many of them here, so it was hard to get a full understanding of their work. But I would say that I understood everything quite easily, after all, one of the characters I absorbed was a genius with a capital letter.

But at the very moment when Semilia and I were about to go to the living area to explore our new flats and get some rest, a regular soldier burst into our room.

- Major Kent, the General summons you to his quarters! - he shouted, out of breath. You could tell he was in a great hurry. Something unpleasant must have happened.

- What's the matter? - I asked him, still moving towards the exit. Semilia followed quietly behind me, and Gilbert stayed to the room.

- I'm not supposed to know," he said simply, leading us to the right place. And I hope that the General has decided to just enquire about our base. I don't really feel like rushing out on my first mission right now.

- General Lane, you wanted to see me? - I asked, quickly making my way to the general's office.

- Yes, Edmont. I guess your squad will have to show its usefulness right now," he told me, smoking a cigar.

- What's the matter? - I pulled myself up, looking at the general seriously.

- Look for yourself," he replied, handing me a small tablet he held in his hands.

And there was news, not the most pleasant news.

"There has been a mass escape from Arkham in Gotham, which has sparked a new gang war. The streets of the city are in complete chaos, people are afraid to leave their homes, and freaks are killing each other right in broad daylight. Several metal men are already known to have taken over crowded places. Police are reporting multiple casualties..."

Yeah, Gotham... Who would have expected my first mission to be in this very city? Well, it's just a matter of making it as spectacular as possible, catching as many criminals as possible, and the metal people are better off going under the knife.

I already hate Gotham, and I've never even been there....
