Chapter 431: 431 continue
After a short pause, the children woke up.
"Mom, have we found Dad?"
"Not yet. It's too hot, so we stopped to rest. Do you want to go play for a while?"
Yuanyuan watched them play on one side while laying out a mat, making it seem like a picnic for the four of them.
There hadn't been any news about the five people, and what seemed like a sure thing hadn't yielded any results.
So they sent someone again, only to receive the news that the five people were dead.
Even more absurd was that it was done by one of their own, and the person in charge ended up committing suicide.
This incident caused great anger from above, prompting a round of inspections, which still concluded the same.
This was very strange indeed. It meant they hadn't found the target, and the mission wasn't completed.
They suspected the people on the other side, but judging from the methods, it was definitely an inside job.
Another team was sent out, this time carefully selected.
Yuanyuan didn't take the usual route with the children; she took a longer path.
This time she avoided the county, steering clear of crowded places. Every day they would rest and play during the day and drive at night.
About ten days later, they finally got on the main road to find Tan Shaoting. Ironically, the four of them were behind their pursuers.
The team was puzzled about why they couldn't catch up with a woman.
So they sped up, increasing the distance between them and Yuanyuan.
After another week, the children were getting a bit restless; after all, they were only able to rest by the roadside in shady spots.
They were too young to understand the journey, only knowing they played by the woods.
Yuanyuan looked at the map; they were still halfway to the location Shaoting provided. But they couldn't stop.
If they stopped here, she feared they might miss Shaoting.
Once again, Yuanyuan felt helpless about their communication. Seeing the kids so droopy, she finally turned into a village.
She inquired and found the village chief, presenting her letter of introduction.
"Village Chief Zhao, I'd like to stay here with the kids for a few days. Is that possible?"
Yuanyuan was quite satisfied with this little village, with its mountains and water, perfect for a few days of fun with the kids.
"Mr. Su, staying in our village is not a problem. It's just that the accommodation isn't great."
Yuanyuan could see that the village was full of low, ired houses.
"Thank you for taking us in, Village Chief Zhao."
"It's no problem at all. I'll show you to the house. It belonged to an elderly couple who passed away years ago. A newlywed couple lived there afterward, but they built a new house, so they moved out."
"Village Chief Zhao, please guide us by car."
"No need. I'm dirty; I'll walk and lead the way."
Yuanyuan tried persuading him again, but he insisted, so she had to drive behind him.
The village wasn't large, just ten minutes away, making Yuanyuan quite pleased. It was near the reservoir with no neighbors nearby, which was ideal.
"Thank you, Village Chief Zhao."
"Mr. Su, there's really no need to thank me. This is all I can do to help."
After sending off Village Chief Zhao, Yuanyuan looked at her three children.
"You three play here a while; Mom will look around inside and be right out."
Since this wasn't her home, Yuanyuan planned to use her superpowers to tidy up quickly. They didn't plan to stay more than three to five days, fearing they'd miss Shaoting if they stayed too long.
The three children nodded. Yuanyuan smiled and went inside the yard.
It was quite nice; there were no weeds, and the young couple must have been diligent.
Inside, she saw the four empty corners, which was even better.
She waved her hand, swept the dust outside, and then went out.
"Let's go in and stay for a few days, okay?"
"Mom, what about Dad?"
"Dad went to work. We'll stay here for a few days and then go find him, okay?"
She laid out the mat, letting the three kids run in the yard. Yuanyuan placed mats and bedsheets on the heated bricks to make them look clean.
She didn't plan to unpack much else, thinking they could just eat the food from space and avoid cooking, which was too troublesome.
Judging by the children's demeanor, they didn't plan to stay long. Perhaps they could leave tomorrow or the day after.
No matter what, she didn't find it a bother. The kids were too young, and with it being the peak of summer, nothing could go wrong.
Tan Shaoting had already completed his mission, but he felt something was amiss, like a calling.
As a cultivator, he trusted this feeling greatly, so he followed it, driving about fifty miles.
He arrived at a village and parked his car in a hidden spot.
He sensed his way to a doorway. Unsure of what he was looking for, he scanned with his Divine Sense and discovered a Jade thumb ring.
This should be what he needed, so he stood outside and knocked on the door.
An elderly man opened the door.
"Uncle, I'm just passing through and would like a drink of water."
"Come in. What brings you to our little village?"
"Just passing by."
"Young man, have a seat. I'll get you some cool water."
"Thank you, Uncle."
"You're welcome."
In the courtyard was a hand-pump well. The old man pumped a bucket of water, "Young man, do you want me to fill your canteen? Our water is especially good."
Tan Shaoting took his canteen over, "Thank you, Uncle."
"You city folks are so polite."
Tan Shaoting filled his canteen with water. It was really cool and refreshing.
He sat on a bench as the old man handed him a bowl, "Young man, help yourself to the water."
Tan Shaoting drank two big bowls; the water was indeed quite tasty.
"Uncle, I'm interested in collecting old items, jewelry and such. Are there many such things in your village? I particularly love Jade."
"Young man, are you here for this? It's quite strictly regulated now."
"Uncle, I just like them for my personal collection."
"I can't speak for others, but I have some jewelry at home. These things have been passed down for ages.
I don't mind telling you; I did think about pawning them. But the money they offer is too little, so I didn't."
Tan Shaoting nodded, "I understand, Uncle. Let me have a look, and if I find something I like, you can tell me how much you want to sell it for."
"Alright, I'll bring it out for you to see. I just want to use the money to help my son buy a house in the county.
Without a house, he can't get married."
