Chapter 202: 202 Road
In the evening, it was still very quiet here. Understandably, ordinary people wouldn't come to such a place. Yuanyuan lay there looking at the starry sky, feeling it to be so fresh and bright.
At dawn the next day, the two packed up and set off. Taking that step meant leaving this place behind.
Since both of them had memorized the map, they would follow the path. Initially, nothing really happened.
The two traveled without talking, fully concentrated on observing the movements around them as the forest was quite dense.
By noon, they had already traveled far. For little donkeys, this place was indeed passable and not as difficult as imagined.
"Are you tired? Want to take a break?"
Tired but manageable, just that the weather was swelteringly hot.
Yuanyuan shook her head, "Let's keep going, rest tonight." Grinding her teeth, she persevered.
They also observed the road conditions. Seeing donkey droppings, they knew they could catch up the next day, assuming they rested at night too.
Nevertheless, Yuanyuan couldn't bear the idea of constant walking, though they could travel at night too. Some rest was necessary.
It wasn't until past eight in the evening that they stopped. Yuanyuan felt particularly uncomfortable, but there was no water source nearby; she had to use water from her storage bottle to wash up.
Tan Shaoting very consciously turned away, a gesture of respect.
Yuanyuan summoned a bathing tub but still felt it wasn't right, so Tan Shaoting set up a tent for her to bathe inside. However, she didn't wash her clothes as she'd need to wear them again the next day.
After her bath, Tan Shaoting also bathed, and it indeed felt much more comfortable.
They then packed up the tent and made a fire.
"Do you think making a fire is part and parcel of camping outdoors?"
Tan Shaoting chuckled, "I don't know, isn't that the norm? But it certainly deters animals to some extent."
Having been on the move all day, Yuanyuan felt exhausted and had little appetite, so she ate a simple porridge.
Tan Shaoting had three meat buns, and they each drank a cup of milk before Yuanyuan went to sleep. Tan Shaoting meditated.
The next day, they followed the same routine. By nightfall, they encountered that group. They kept a distance and did not approach.
Yuanyuan was not pleased since she couldn't bathe that night.
Forget it. She endured.
Sotun noticed the two. "Wu Sotun, not the two from the day before yesterday, but two boys."
"Hmm, ignore them. If they approach, we'll deal with them. Let's rest. You go tend to the donkeys."
The two followed the same routine as the day before. However, this time, Tan Shaoting didn't cultivate but just sat there.
Yuanyuan didn't sleep deeply, aware that sometimes people are far more dangerous than animals.
The night passed peacefully since they didn't have much to take care of, nor any livestock. So they passed by those people and left.
Sotun watched them leave, puzzled and amused, thinking they were ignorant.
How could the journey be so peaceful? Seeing the two boys without anything valuable, he thought they could be sold for mining.
The two were oblivious to Sotun's malice and continued on.
Keeping their heads down, they pressed forward. Yuanyuan just wanted to quickly shake them off.
In fact, under normal circumstances, Sotun and his group would take an hour to set off, needing to feed the animals and load belongings.
By evening, Sotun's group still hadn't caught up with the two.
This time, Yuanyuan bathed again. "We should be able to get out of here by tomorrow, right?"
"That's what the map shows. We should."
Both felt incredibly fortunate not to encounter much, but it was still early to make such claims; they still had a night and a day's journey ahead. One never knows what might happen.
Tan Shaoting's Divine Sense hadn't detected that group, indicating they were far off, likely with no other routes.
Thanks to their light travel and constant movement, their speed was much faster.
The night was filled with many distant calls, indicating the place wasn't safe.
With Tan Shaoting on guard, Yuanyuan slept soundly, exhausted from the day's journey.
After two more hours on the road, Sotun's group reached the place, noticing someone had rested there.
"Wu Sotun, their speed is quite fast. In the mountains, they're untouchable for now."
"Hmm. We'll see later. We should hurry as well."
The two reached the edge of the forest by four o'clock, and Yuanyuan felt relieved. While this place might still be dangerous, it felt like passing a level.
Ruan Lingyu had said that after leaving the forest, it would be a few more hours' walk to the village.
The village, though inconspicuous, was filled with skilled people because they owned a mine.
They decided not to go there, as it was too late. Instead, they looked for a place to rest, planning to head over the next day.
In fact, they were unaware Sotun was from that village.
"Let's keep our distance from the road and find a more concealed place to rest."
Yuanyuan readily agreed, "Tonight, you rest," feeling guilty as Tan Shaoting had been on night watch.
"It's okay, I don't need to sleep."
"How can that be?"
Tan Shaoting simply smiled, "If you adapt to cultivation, you can do it too." This girl never took cultivation seriously.
Tan Shaoting used Divine Sense to scan the surroundings. They found a hidden small cave, seemingly a rest stop for travelers.
"That group won't come here, right? I feel they shouldn't be there. If they arrive, it will be late, and I don't think they'd travel by night."
"Then let's head in another direction."
The two finally settled in a small valley on the other side. This spot would do.
This time they set up the tent; Yuanyuan wanted to bathe and do laundry as she'd worn the same clothes for three days, feeling quite miserable.
Tan Shaoting didn't object, so by the time they were both freshened up, it was already dark.
Since they were at the foot of the mountain, they didn't set a fire that night to avoid detection.
They laid their bedding directly in the tent.
With a full stomach, Yuanyuan quickly felt drowsy.
"Go ahead and sleep; I've got it covered."
Yuanyuan, tears in her eyes from yawning, intended for Tan Shaoting to rest today, but couldn't resist the call of sleep; she was out shortly after lying down.
At that moment, Tan Shaoting knew the group had reached the mountain's base. They indeed headed to that cave, confirming Yuanyuan's suspicion; it was their resting place.
