Chapter 67: Volume 1: Chapter 68 - Avalon
...So it still ends up like this.
Watching the dazed girl stumble forward step by step, Merlin lay on the ground, looked up at the sky, and let out a heavy sigh.
In this way, Britain had indeed been saved, just as the girl had wished. But in the end, what the girl had obtained was still not happiness, but pain.
"Perhaps you shouldn't have done that, En..."
Muttering softly to himself, Merlin was pondering how to bring Artoria's spirit back when a cold, elegant voice suddenly sounded.
"I only came to check on the situation because Mordred said En had disappeared... But what on earth are you all doing?"
"M-Mother?!"
Gawain looked at Morgan, who had appeared at some point on the courtyard wall, dressed in a black Mystic Code dress, her face veiled in black, a staff in her hand. Behind her, a small figure seemed to be hiding. He was surprised, not understanding why she had appeared here.
Beside him, Gareth and Gaheris trembled instinctively, while only Agravain merely frowned slightly.
But Morgan did not answer her "traitorous son's" question. She just glanced at Gawain and the others coolly, then looked with some disgust at Artoria, whose clothes were stained with vomit. Her fine brows furrowed, and she tapped the staff in her hand lightly.
In the next instant, Morgan and the small figure behind her appeared inside the courtyard.
"Tell me, what exactly happened here, Gawain."
Seeing that Artoria had no reaction to her arrival and was just walking forward slowly in a daze, Morgan deliberately kicked a small stone, causing it to hit the head of Merlin, who was lying on the ground. The man let out an involuntary cry of pain, and only then did she turn her head to question Gawain.
"This..."
Gawain hesitated for a few seconds, his eyes involuntarily looking toward Merlin. Only after seeing the white-robed magus give him a look that said, "Do as you please," did he slowly recount everything that had happened.
"...I see. No wonder those absurd rumors about 'King Arthur's miracle and Merlin's magic making the land bountiful again' were spreading a while ago. So this was the truth behind it?"
Morgan let out a cold laugh, glancing at Merlin, who was lying on the ground motionless, as if playing dead.
She had, of course, heard about the "bountiful harvest" rumored in other territories. But upon learning that the hero of this rumor was Merlin, she had subconsciously assumed it was just another one of the half-incubus's tricks and hadn't paid it much mind.
Who would have known that this was the truth of the matter?
"You all are truly remarkable, to actually place all the responsibility on En's shoulders alone."
The Knights of the Round Table all showed looks of shame, not daring to refute her. But after Morgan's words fell with a cold snort, the staff in her hand tapped the ground again without any warning.
In the next second, the earth trembled, and dozens of earthen thorns suddenly burst from the ground, directly blasting away the prone Merlin and Artoria, who was still moving forward aimlessly in the distance.
"My King!"
"What do you think you're doing, you witch!"
"This wasn't His Majesty's fault, Mother!"
...
The various Knights of the Round Table either stood in front of Morgan, their weapons drawn, or rushed to check on the condition of the girl who had been slammed hard against the wall by the impact of the earthen thorns.
But Artoria, leaning against the wall after being thrown, did not cry out in pain. Her dull, holy, cerulean eyes just stared blankly ahead, like a non-responsive doll.
Or perhaps, she was atoning for her own sins, completely allowing Morgan to attack her.
Looking at Artoria in this state with some displeasure, Morgan clicked her tongue and withdrew her magic.
Merlin, who had also been thrown, slowly sat up on his own, patted the dust off himself, and sighed softly, not complaining about Morgan's attack on him.
After all, the white-robed magus knew very well that from the moment he had implemented the boy's plan, he was destined to be resented. Yet he had to do it.
"...This pathetic look of yours is truly disgusting, Arthur."
Morgan insulted Artoria, but the girl still did not respond. Just as she was about to say something more, the small figure who had been hiding behind her tugged on her sleeve and said softly.
"Mother, didn't we come to talk about Lord Father?"
Her pretty face, which had been tinged with anger, froze for a few seconds at this clear voice. Helpless, Morgan had to swallow her dissatisfaction. Only then did the Round Table Knights turn their attention to the figure behind Morgan.
"Moth...er? Mother, when did you have another child? And why does this child's face look so much like His Majesty's..."
Gawain stared at the small face of Mordred, who was wearing a cloak and hood, his eyes filled with disbelief. A horrifying guess flashed through his mind.
"Don't tell me, this is yours and His Majesty's..."
"What nonsense are you talking, you 'traitorous son'!?"
Her beautiful eyes glared at Gawain so fiercely that he immediately fell silent. Morgan said irritably, then took Mordred's hand and pulled the girl out from behind her. After glancing at the girl, Merlin's previously grave expression suddenly froze.
"This child... I say, Morgan, did you actually go behind En and Artoria's backs and secretly create their child?"
The amount of information contained in those words was so great that the minds of the Round Table Knights all short-circuited for a moment.
And hearing the boy's name again, Artoria finally showed some reaction. She slowly raised her head and looked at the small girl nestled beside Morgan.
"...Who said this is Arthur and En's child? This is clearly my and En's child. Open your eyes and see clearly, you half-incubus!"
Morgan denied it subconsciously, but the girl asked back in confusion.
"But, Mother, didn't you say I was born from 'King Arthur,' Lord Father, and you, all three together?"
The air fell silent in an instant. The Round Table Knights couldn't help but feel that they had heard something they shouldn't have.
Her words caught in her throat, Morgan's fine brows twitched slightly. A moment later, she reprimanded her in a low voice.
"...Don't interrupt right now, Mordred."
"Oh."
The girl nodded and obediently closed her mouth, but her holy, cerulean eyes, which seemed to be ringed with gold, were secretly observing Artoria, who was leaning against the wall in the distance.
"So, what did you really come here for? Surely not just to show off to Artoria? I advise you to drop that thought... That person is probably in no state to care about such things right now."
Although somewhat surprised that Morgan had brought such a shocking child with her, Merlin, after a sigh, still offered her a piece of advice.
But at the end, as if remembering something, he frowned and asked.
"By the way, what did you mean by what you said when you first arrived? What did you mean 'Mordred said En had disappeared'? This child... can she sense En's presence?"
"...Tsk. I only came to confirm it, but I didn't expect En to have really disappeared because of your mistake. In that case, that person really wasn't from this era after all..."
Morgan said, as if answering and also as if talking to herself, turning her face away with some displeasure.
"What does that mean?"
Merlin was stunned for a few seconds, then, as if inspired by her words, fell into thought, his expression somewhat dazed.
"What does it mean? Did you really think the kind of Mystery that can revitalize the land with just blood could still be born in this era, you half-incubus? A single White Dragon was already the last gasp of the Age of Gods. If this era could truly give birth to an existence like En, would it still be in decline?"
"You're saying En came to Britain from another era by chance? But even so, he has already returned to the land... Wait, you said this child can sense En?"
As if having found a blind spot, Merlin shot up from the ground, his eyes fixed on Mordred.
After several seconds, as if he had vaguely grasped a clue, he murmured to himself.
"Is this a connection through the bloodline...? But does this connection lead to the past, or toward the future?"
"It feels like he's 'ahead'. I can faintly feel Lord Father's presence."
The girl couldn't help but answer the white-robed magus, pointing forward.
But Merlin knew that she was not referring to a direction in a spatial sense. He said softly.
"In the future? If that's the case, then there really is still hope..."
Seeing that this half-incubus had immediately connected all the dots with just a few hints, Morgan clicked her tongue in displeasure but did not reprimand Mordred for speaking out of turn.
She let out a soft snort and said.
"...Since it's been confirmed that En is indeed no longer in this era, then there's no reason to stay here. I can't be bothered to talk to you lot any longer. In the end, En will definitely be mine. Let's go, Mordred."
However, before Morgan could prepare to leave, Artoria, who had vaguely heard everything, finally seemed to reboot. She hurriedly pushed herself up, pushed away Bedivere who was trying to support her, and stumbled before Morgan. She grabbed her arms, looked up at Morgan, and said with a trembling voice.
"Royal Sister, i-is what you just said true? Is En really still alive? Please tell me how I can see him again! I'm begging you, Royal Sister!"
Morgan looked at the girl coldly, intending to refuse her outright.
But when she saw that the only thing left in the girl's dull, lifeless, holy, cerulean eyes was a faint hope burning frantically, her words got stuck. After a few seconds, she pressed her lips together and spat out one word with displeasure.
"...Avalon."
