Chapter 64: Volume 1: Chapter 65 - Spreading Grace Upon the Land
The morning sun shone upon the black armor, bringing with it a comforting warmth.
Although he could not see what the rising sun looked like, Aozaki Rin could feel that it must be an incredibly beautiful sight.
Ever since leaving Camelot, he had been walking forward without pause.
It seemed that after he had figured out what he could truly do, the determination in his heart had unlocked some kind of physical limit, making his steps much lighter.
If an outsider were watching, they would find that in a mere instant, his figure had already moved forward by several kilometers.
But strangely, this was not a form of spatial movement, because every one of the boy's footprints was left firmly on the earth, leaving behind a faint, twilight-colored radiance.
All of this could perhaps only be attributed to the fact that his speed had surpassed the limits of what the human eye could capture.
The boy, with a greatsword on his back, was like a knight just beginning his journey, pressing onward without a moment's rest.
But he was not just moving forward aimlessly. Instead, he followed the path of his past journey with the girl and the others as if from memory, his steps guided by feeling.
[You passed through a mountain range, recalling that this was where you had once vanquished bandits. Now, there were only the songs of birds and beasts, exceptionally peaceful.]
[You passed through a forest, remembering that this was where you had encountered the giant. Now, it had once again become a paradise for wild animals.]
[You passed by a territory, knowing that this was where Merlin had once provoked a noble girl, and now, that same noble girl was becoming the new lord amidst the blessings of the people.]
[...]
[Everything is changing, and it's not just these things that are changing.]
[You walk forward with unwavering determination, leaving your footprints on every inch of the land. The sunlight shines on your black armor, and for some reason, it makes your shadow look somewhat illusory.]
[But there is no confusion in your heart. You can only feel that something is blossoming from within your body, and this something is constantly flowing out of you, remaining in the earth as you advance. Yet even so, you still do not stop.]
[Until, after passing through a village and sensing that someone was being attacked by a demonic beast, you finally halt your steps. You act without hesitation, using the greatsword in your hand to slice through the demonic beast's flesh and protect several villagers.]
[But just as you are about to continue on your way, a young girl tugs on the cape of your armor and gives you a small flower as a gift of thanks.]
[You are somewhat puzzled. The other villagers are all a little afraid of you with your greatsword, only expressing their thanks from a distance. Why does this girl dare to approach you directly?]
[And so, after a moment's hesitation, you ask her this question, and the girl answers without the slightest pause.]
["Because I want to become a knight like you when I grow up, big brother, and then go to Camelot." ]
[You are stunned for a moment and, with some curiosity, ask her why. The girl continues her answer.]
["That way, I can become King Arthur's knight and protect 'him' by 'his' side!" ]
[You then ask the girl why she reveres "King Arthur" so much, and she tells you.]
["Because that great person brought victory and peace to Britain, and it's thanks to that great person that everyone can fill their stomachs now and no longer go hungry." ]
[You are dazed for a few seconds, then let out a soft laugh, pat the girl's head, and say that she is right.]
[After accepting the girl's flower and encouraging her, you continue on your journey.]
[You know with certainty that the choice you have made is not wrong. Perhaps at the beginning, you still held some hesitation, but after hearing the girl's answer, you understand that all of this is worth doing.]
[This is not just to protect the smile of your adoptive sister; it is also because, in your eyes, since this is a dream, why not make the ending of this dream a little more beautiful?]
[You walk through one territory after another. Everywhere you go, you can hear people praising your sister's achievements, expressing their gratitude to her. At the same time, people are celebrating the hard-won harvest, their cheers echoing across the sky.]
[Many people are smiling, filled with hope for the future.]
[You smile along with them, and then you continue to move forward. To you, these smiles were what had always supported your sister, and now, they have also become your reason for advancing.]
[Your pace grows faster and faster. More and more of that 'something' flows out of you. Your form becomes more and more ethereal, yet it is maintained at a certain limit, as if by your final, stubborn will.]
[Finally, a day quietly passes. When the morning of the second day arrives again, you have unknowingly walked across all of Britain with your own two feet, ultimately returning to the hillside in the town where you grew up, to your very first home.]
[—Before the door of that simple wooden cottage.]
The light of the morning sun shone quietly upon the black armor. The boy, with heavy steps, his illusory form swaying slightly, reached out a hand toward the wooden door before him and said with a soft, smiling voice.
"...I'm home, Father."
—However, the creaking sound of the wooden door turning did not ring out.
Half a minute later, the elderly knight pushed open the door and walked out from inside. A slightly uncertain expression was on his aged face, and he subconsciously looked around and called out.
"En?"
But no one answered his words.
Because outside the door, there was only a suit of black armor, a greatsword, a longsword wrapped in cloth strips, a broken sword, and a single spring flower, swaying in the wind.
Lying quietly on the ground.
And the person who had just spoken those youthful words of returning home had long since vanished...
The Chalk-White Castle, Camelot.
In a certain room, a sleeping golden-haired girl seemed to be having a nightmare at this moment, her fine brows knitted together tightly.
A moment later, her long eyelashes trembled lightly, and she slowly opened her eyes. For some reason, she felt a sense of fatigue, as if from a long sleep.
Artoria shook her head slightly to clear her thoughts, feeling a little confused.
But almost immediately, she noticed that the familiar feeling of being held in her arms had disappeared at some point.
The girl blinked, got up from the bed, and her holy, cerulean eyes scanned the room. Not finding the boy's figure, she muttered to herself in confusion.
"He's already up and training so early?"
"I just told him yesterday not to work so hard. It looks like I'll have to give him a good talking-to. That's also a sister's responsibility."
As if she had a rare opportunity to display her authority as an older sister, the girl shook her head helplessly, then a slight, interested smile appeared on her lips as she walked toward the door with light steps and pushed it open.
