Reborn in Type-Moon, My Sister is Aoko Aozaki

Chapter 61: Volume 1: Chapter 62 - Do You Remember the Last Time Sister Smiled So Happily?

"What?! Are you serious? You really found a way to solve the food problem?!"

Inside the workroom, Artoria shot up from her seat the moment she heard the news. She placed her hands on the boy's shoulders, the ahoge on her head spinning with excitement.

Originally, she had just been making a last-ditch effort, sending Merlin to investigate with the faint hope of a "let's just see what happens" attitude. She had never expected him to bring back such good news.

"Mhm. Merlin's magic is amazing. He made the wheat field grow mature grain in an instant. Before long, we should be able to solve the food shortage. This time, Sister, you really have to thank Merlin properly."

Aozaki Rin smiled, blinking. His unfocused eyes subconsciously shifted away from the direction of the girl's voice, as if he were trying to get used to something he wasn't comfortable with.

However, Artoria, who was currently swept up in joy, did not notice the subtle change in the boy's expression. She smiled as if a great weight had been lifted from her, stroked the boy's soft black hair, which felt wonderful to the touch, and chuckled.

"Even if you didn't say it, I know I have to thank that man properly."

The girl turned her head to look at the white-robed magus who had been standing silently in the room all this time and said seriously.

"This time, I really owe you, Merlin. Although you're always causing trouble and seem unreliable, you really are the court magus you claim to be... Thank you, Merlin."

Faced with the girl's sincere gratitude, Merlin opened his mouth as if to say something, but after his gaze fell upon the pleading and uneasy sorrow on the boy's face, he pressed his lips together and sighed inwardly.

A moment later, Merlin looked up again, a proud smile on his face as he said boastfully.

"Of course. After all, I've held the position of court magus since the time of the former king. It's only natural that I have this much skill. But if you're going to thank me, you can spare me the first few sentences."

"Besides, don't get too happy just yet, Artoria. Although my 'specialized magic' can solve the food problem, this spell is not yet stable and has many unstable factors. It's impossible to implement it on a large scale, as this magic can only be performed by me."

"So don't get carried away and forget the situation at hand."

The lies flowed effortlessly. Merlin's expression was no different from usual, making it impossible for anyone to guess what he was thinking in his heart.

"I am, of course, aware of that. But this is at least a glimmer of hope..."

Having been lectured by Merlin for the first time in a long while, Artoria smiled helplessly. She naturally understood that this matter could not be announced publicly yet. Otherwise, it would certainly cause the various territories, which were already short on food, to start scrambling to beg Camelot to send Merlin to them.

Still, she couldn't help but hesitate for a moment before asking.

"So... that magic of yours, Merlin, how long will it take to be fully stabilized?"

"It will probably be a while yet. You don't need to think about it in the short term. You'd be better off focusing your attention on your official duties."

Tapping Artoria lightly on the head with his staff, Merlin, for a moment, had the serious air of a mentor. But he then said in a lazy tone.

"Also, we've traveled a long way and En and I are a bit tired, so we'll go rest first. We've brought back all the grain created by the magic. It's in the granary now, and Kay should still be taking inventory. If you want to confirm it, you can go take a look."

With that, Merlin waved his hand and, taking the boy's arm, left the workroom.

And although Merlin's suggestion was very tempting, Artoria knew that since her adoptive brother was already confirming it, there was no need for her to double-check.

"Alright! Then I have to keep working hard too!"

Patting her own cheeks to psyche herself up, Artoria looked at the boy's departing figure, the corners of her lips curling up. Looking fully motivated, she threw herself back into her work.

Being dragged back to the room by Merlin, Aozaki Rin understood that Merlin wanted to talk to him alone again, so he didn't struggle and followed his steps.

And upon returning to the room, as soon as the door was closed, Aozaki Rin heard a heavy sigh.

"...It's not too late to stop now, En."

Merlin looked at the boy with a complex expression. To be honest, he had never expected that the boy's blood could possess such power, allowing the earth, which should have been ravaged by the clash between the rules of the divine and modern eras, to be instantly revitalized.

Undoubtedly, the boy's blood had acted as a buffer, causing the two sets of rules to combine at that moment instead of clashing.

This could indeed allow Britain to transition from the end of the Age of Gods to the next era more gently, perhaps even without being affected at all.

But Merlin, having confirmed the condition of the land, understood that this effect could only last for a moment. Just like that wheat field that had seemed to appear out of thin air, the land had become barren again after one harvest.

Unless this power was continuously applied to change the entirety of Britain's land, it would only be a momentary final radiance.

However, the price for doing so was heavy enough to take one's breath away. And in the current situation, all that had happened was that Britain's fate had been transferred from the shoulders of one girl to those of another boy.

But to Merlin's suggestion, Aozaki Rin did not give a direct answer. He turned around, faced Merlin with a smile, and asked.

"Merlin, do you remember the last time Sister smiled so happily?"

Merlin was speechless for a moment. He desperately wanted to answer, "It was when she 'married' you," but at this moment, he couldn't get any words out.

Because from this one question, he already knew the boy's answer.

"I know you're worried about me, but please rest assured, my body isn't that fragile."

"And a long time ago, I already promised Sister that I would share her responsibilities with her. Since she had to endure the burden of Britain's inevitable demise from the very beginning and still chose to move forward, then right now, all I'm doing is sharing a small part of that 'weight'. So..."

The boy sat down in a chair, rolled up his sleeve to reveal his fair, smooth forearm, and with a smile on his lips, said earnestly.

"Let's begin. Britain should not perish in suffering. At the very least, it should be able to meet a peaceful end."
