Chapter 35: Ambushed While Searching For Supplies
Su Ling didn't sleep for too long, just about ten minutes, before she woke up.
It seemed her body had gradually adapted to the energy deficit caused by the reinforcement, or maybe the energy required for large-scale reinforcement had decreased after the system upgrade. In any case, Su Ling recovered quickly this time.
The two green tea bitches were sitting outside, cursing at people, but they didn't dare to come in.
Su Ling simply rolled over and went back to sleep.
After some time passed, the surroundings finally quieted down.
Just as everyone was entering deep sleep, arcs of electricity suddenly flashed in the electric fence around the farm. Within these faint white arcs, hundreds of zombies were approaching.
The hunting dogs grew restless and began barking wildly.
Li Xueying was awakened by the barking and started cursing again.
"What's so good about living here instead of in the base? Why did we have to come to this godforsaken place? It's so noisy! Su Rou, are you trying to squeeze me to death? Can't you move somewhere else?"
Su Rou suppressed her anger and said, "Miss Li, there's nowhere else for me to go."
Even if two people squeezed onto the sofa, it still wouldn't be comfortable, no matter how slim their figures were.
Li Xueying, relying on Sheng Hongye's support, didn't care about Su Rou at all and simply pushed her to the ground.
Su Rou exclaimed in pain and turned on the light.
At this point, the barking became even more intense.
Su Ling was awakened and sat up on the bed.
Su Rou, unable to bear it any longer, came into the bedroom and was startled to see Su Ling sitting on the bed.
Quickly, she put on a smile.
"Sis, there's really no place on the sofa. Can you let me stay with you for the night?"
Looking at that face, Su Ling felt nauseous and only said two words.
"Get lost."
She got out of bed barefoot, pushed Su Rou out the door, and unceremoniously locked it.
Su Rou was persistent and continued to feign pitifulness outside.
"Sis, I know I was wrong. Just let me rest in the room for one night, okay?"
Su Ling had turned off the lights and laid back down.
Now that she said she was sorry, what good would that do? She wasn't a white-lotus, and there was no way she would soften her heart. 1White lotus is a Chinese term that refers to a person who pretends to be innocent, pure, and virtuous, but in reality, they are insincere and manipulative.
Su Rou begged for a while, but it was of no avail. She became furious.
Standing at the door, she cursed loudly, "Su Ling, you bitch, don't think you can act like a tyrant just because Mr. Sheng takes care of you. One day, you'll cry."
At this point, Li Xueying was also awakened.
Seeing the two of them arguing, she started to butter up Su Rou.
"Ah, your sister is quite heartless. I think you should bear with it and sleep on the sofa with me."
Su Rou immediately squeezed out two tears. "Thank you, Miss Li."
While the two were talking, the door next to them had already opened.
Er Lei and Geng Hao came out of the room, using a flashlight to see, and cursed, "Holy shit, the zombies are here."
"Ah! Zombies!"
Li Xueying began her lion's roar, screaming at the top of her lungs.
Bang, bang, two gunshots rang out.
Two zombies climbing the wall were shot in the head by a shotgun.
Xin Zan came out from the room on the east side, with a smug look on his face.
Sheng Hongye, who had just stepped out, gave him a thumbs-up.
"Good marksmanship, but it's best not to use guns. Zombies can be attracted by the sound."
Xin Zan snorted and rode his motorcycle towards the entrance.
Seeing Xin Zan's rudeness, Er Lei was somewhat displeased. "Mr. Sheng."
Sheng Hongye waved his hand and glanced at the main house.
"Defense first, we'll talk about other matters later."
Er Lei hummed, "Mr. Sheng, I can't help but feel that these people don't have good intentions."
Sheng Hongye frowned but didn't say anything.
Glancing at Geng Hao, who had gone to the entrance, he waved at Er Lei and the others.
In the room, Li Xueying and Su Rou were too scared to sleep, and Su Ling also sat up in the darkness.
However, she wasn't too nervous. The outer walls were surrounded by electric fences and spikes, plus Sheng Hongye and the other men have rich combat experience. She wasn't worried about the zombies breaking in.
But when she thought of Liu Yu, she felt a bit uneasy.
She always felt that the Liu Yu she met this time was very different from the person she had saved initially. Could the awakening of abilities cause a person's character and temperament to undergo some change?
Sitting on the bed, she indulged in random thoughts until dawn, and then she heard the voices of Sheng Hongye and the others returning.
It seemed they had successfully defended the farm. Su Ling yawned and decided to take a short nap.
Ever since she entered the apocalypse, her biological clock had been severely disrupted, and she had never slept a full night's sleep. Sometimes she even felt as if she was still in the hospital, living that busy and hectic life of constant surgeries.
Two hours later, Su Ling was awakened by the sound of a motorcycle engine.
Opening the door, she found that Li Xueying and Su Rou were nowhere to be seen.
Su Ling felt a little puzzled and couldn't help but walk into the courtyard. Geng Hao was washing his face and greeted her with a smile when he saw her.
"Sister Su Ling, did you sleep well yesterday?"
"It was okay. Where are they?"
Geng Hao wiped his face and replied, "Er Lei and a few others, along with Xin Zan, went out to search for supplies. Miss Li Xueying and Miss Su Rou found it boring here, so they followed Haidu to the farm."
Su Ling's heart skipped a beat, and she had an inexplicable sense of unease.
"What about Mr. Sheng?"
"Mr. Sheng didn't go. He's resting in the room; it seems he caught a cold."
"Oh."
Su Ling breathed a sigh of relief and turned around, only to see Liu Yu standing at the doorway, smiling at her.
"Miss Su, why are you so nervous during broad daylight?"
Su Ling shrugged. "Am I really that nervous?"
Liu Yu took a few steps forward and said casually, "There won't be any zombies during the day. You can relax."
"Thank you for the advice. I'm going to check on Mr. Sheng."
For some reason, every time she spoke with Liu Yu, she felt as if he was peering into her soul, a feeling that she didn't like.
Pushing open the door, she saw Sheng Hongye lying on the couch.
His eyes were tightly shut, and indeed, his complexion didn't look great.
Gu Kai Xuan was obediently playing a bubble shooter game on his phone. When he saw Su Ling, he happily called out, "Auntie!"
"Hush!"
Su Ling gestured for him not to speak and walked up to the couch, gently touching Sheng Hongye's forehead.
He didn't have a fever.
Sheng Hongye opened his eyes and tried to sit up.
Su Ling hurriedly held him down.
"There's nothing urgent during the day. Lie down for a while longer; I'll go find some medicine for you."
"I'm fine."
Sheng Hongye reached out and grabbed Su Ling's hand, his iron-like grip makes her fingers ache. He didn't look like someone who was seriously ill.
She quickly pulled her hand back, her face slightly red.
"You've been working hard these past few days. I'm relieved as long as you're okay."
Sheng Hongye raised an eyebrow, his voice slightly husky.
"Is this Miss Su's way of showing concern?"
Facing such an outstanding man, Su Ling also inexplicably felt a bit awkward. She turned her face away and tried to sound indifferent, saying, "We're all in the same boat. Of course, I'll be concerned."
Finally, she added, "I'll be concerned about everyone."
Sheng Hongye's lips curved, not revealing his thoughts.
At that moment, the sound of horse hooves came from outside, and Xin Zan and another Tibetan man rushed back, both covered in blood.
Speaking in broken Mandarin, Xin Zan said, "We were ambushed. Everyone who went with us is dead except the two of us."
