Chapter 687: Skirmishes in Safavid
6th May 1660
The border between the Kingdom of Lalishsthan and the Takkalu family, as well as the border between the Kingdom of Persia and the families of Ustadelu and Shamlu, is a very delicate area.
Almost at any time, soldiers are stationed at the border. Sentries are kept under watch 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The border forces consist of an alliance of the Lalishsthan Kingdom, Persian Kingdom, and the Bharatiya Empire. On the opposite side, it consists of military forces from the Shamlu family and Ustajlu family. The Takkalu family and the Afshar family have not made any moves recently. The Afshar family is too scared to make a move, as more than 50% of its border is open to the threat of the Bharatiya Empire, while the Takkalu family is in a half-dead state where they can only preserve themselves without much military ambition. But all of that changed when the Ottoman Empire came to aid the Takkalu family.
When the news about the involvement of the Ottomans had been made known to various military leaders standing guard on the border, the military was immediately mobilised, thinking that a huge war was about to start, as this war was not so much a civil war of the Safavid Empire but a proxy war fought between the Bharatiya Empire and the Ottoman Empire. However, interestingly enough, the Takkalu family, i.e., the Ottoman Empire, had not made any moves yet.
That is, until now.
"First lieutenant, sir, the scouts have sent a message. A group of 300 armed men are inbound towards the border," a military intelligence agent informed with a grim expression on his face.
The military intelligence organisation does not have a name; it is simply called "Military Hawk" by the soldiers on the ground. It is a temporary organisation modelled after Bharatiya Sainik Pragya with the specific purpose of handling intelligence affairs on the border.
The joint owners of the organisation are the three alliance nations of Bharat, Lalishsthan, and Persia.
Dilshad Shingali, a fair, middle-aged man with a lean and athletic build, is a first lieutenant from the Kingdom of Lalishsthan, with a command over four platoons.
As soon as he heard the intel of enemies incoming, he frowned. The location chosen by the enemy was strange; the area he was stationed in was very difficult to attack. Practically speaking, the enemy should not have picked his perimeter as the attack point. For the same reason, there were only 160 soldiers under his command. However, despite not being able to understand the thinking of the enemy, he was not worried, mainly because he did not have to rush into the battlefield with a sword and shield. Instead, battles had become extremely tactical and positional, and when it came to a battle of positions, he had absolute confidence he would be the winner.
He was guarding a region where horses were impossible to use, so he could expect no large-scale artillery from the enemy. What's more, he had a defensive perimeter under his control, which consisted of multiple cannons, a whole barracks loaded with ammunition, and all 160 soldiers under his command decked out with first-generation Brown Bess Rifles.
Dilshad Shingali, looking into the distance, spoke, His calm and composed voice drifting into the ears of second lieutenant , "Blow the horn,"
Dilshad squinted his eyes, trying to locate the enemy.
The soldiers under his command who were on a break after their shift, as soon as they heard the trumpets, immediately stopped what they were doing, dressed up, and lined up behind the perimeter, fully decked out with weapons and ammunition. The soldiers were a mixture of men from all three nations of the alliance, but they all followed the orders unconditionally.
The soldiers who were already on active duty kept their eyes locked on the front and the artillerymen loaded up the cannons and prepared to take aim at a moment's notice.
In the meantime, the military hawk did not stay behind; instead, he had already left the perimeter as he went to inform the Brigadier General about the incoming enemy.
Moments later
"They're here!" Dilshad Shingali said to himself in his heart as he vaguely noticed the flag of the Takkalu family over the horizon.
"Prepare to attack," he ordered calmly.
"Click!"
"Click!"
"Click!"
Guns were all pointed towards the approaching enemy, and fingers rested on triggers, just waiting for the first lieutenant's orders.
As the enemy came closer, Dilshad Shingali frowned, because apart from the flag of the Takkalu family, there was also the flag of the Ottoman Empire. His brows knitted together like a dried-up riverbed. He had heard the rumours of the Ottoman Empire supporting the Takkalu family, but since there had been no attacks from the Takkalu family, the matter had remained a rumour.
"So it is true, then," he said, gritting his teeth.
If there was someone the Yezidi people hated, it would be the Kurds, who were responsible for their massacre. But the second most hated people for the Yezidis were the Ottomans.
The old leader, that is, the father of the current leader, actually cooperated very well with the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire, from time to time, asked the old leader to complete a task for them in the Safavid Empire, and the old leader would do it. Due to the support of the Ottoman Empire, the Kurds also did not dare to move against them. But when the massacre happened, the Ottomans actually backstabbed the old leader. Not only did they not help when asked for it, but they even sent a noble to collect the gold rewards issued by the Kurds.
"Krack!"
Dilshad's knuckles crackled as he clenched his fist tightly until they turned white. He could feel that his emotions were running out of control. He was finding it hard to stay rational. However, fortunately, he did not have to hold back in the current situation, since the Ottomans were clearly coming with malicious intent. So, even if he killed them all, it would not be him using his position to avenge his personal grudge but simply being a soldier and fulfilling his duty perfectly as a first lieutenant.
According to what the teachers from the Bharatiya army had taught him, he measured the distance of the approaching enemy in his mind, and when he felt the time was right, he roared, "Fire!"
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
Gunshots were immediately heard, as the bullets blasted out of the barrels at supersonic speeds. The enemy was caught off guard, as they did not expect the opponent to be so decisive. However, the surprise lasted only for a split second, as they quickly maneuvered to cover themselves behind trees and natural terrain.
"Ahh!"
Still, there were a few casualties on the enemy's side, where a few of them were hit inadvertently.
"BOOM!"
Very soon, there was a hole in the tree, and the six-kilogram caliber cannon of the Bharatiya Empire started to fire at the enemies. The cannon was directly aimed at the trees behind which the enemies were hiding.
The trees cracked and fell down one by one as the enemy had no choice but to expose themselves.
Looking at the scene, Dilshad Shingali smirked in satisfaction. He was very happy, but looking at the enemies who were still alive, he frowned and noted in his heart, "After this battle, I should clear out all the trees on the other side."
"Bang!"
"Ahhh!"
Just when he was deep in thought, the sound of a gunshot was heard from the opposite side. It was from an enemy soldier who was holding what looked like an Ottoman rifle.
Dilshad Shingali was stunned to hear the cry of pain and agony coming from beside him. Looking around, he was shocked to discover that it was one of his men who had fallen down in a pool of blood.
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
Dilshad Shingali did not have time to ponder. The opponent had a lot of firearms. Although the accuracy and range did not seem to be too good, In the current battle, it should not matter since the range at which the fighting was happening was within 100 meters, and the enemy had a lot more people and guns remaining.
He looked back and roared,
"Everyone duck down, cover and shoot! Do not stay in the same place—keep changing positions. Artillerymen, assume a defensive stance. Take cover behind the artillery and fire at the enemy until you can no longer."
The gunfire, explosions, screams, and cries of pain, agony, and despair were heard from both ends of the battle.
Dilshad Shingali really expected there to be no artillery with the enemy, but he was greatly mistaken. The only reason the enemy did not use artillery was because it was much harder to move it in such challenging terrain without horses.
"BOOOM!"
Soon a powerful roar of a cannon was heard. The sound of this one cannon dwarfed the sound of almost all the other weapons in the battlefield.
"ahh!"
A sentry was blown apart along with the artillery and artillery men within it. It went up in flames. The cannon shot looked very similar to the incendiary bomb of the Bharatiya Empire.
Dilshad Shingali was now feeling a little panicked. Although he was trained in all the advanced military tactics taught by the instructors from the Bharatiya Empire, it is a fact that he is not experienced enough.
It was too easy for him to get flustered with only a single setback. Fortunately, what Dilshad Shingali lacked in experience he more than enough made up with bravery.
"All the artillery direct your firepower towards the enemy cannon. Soldiers hold down the perimeter until the reinforcements arrive. No matter what, the enemy should not move an inch within the perimeter. Fight to the death if you have to."
Dilshad Shingali pulled aside a few sergeants who were going to replace the soldier who was just injured. "Bring your squadrons and come with me."
Dilshad Shingali knew the terrain of the area he was stationed in like the back of his hand, so without the enemy's knowledge he went through a hollow tree bark under which there was not soil, but a hole due to soil erosion, and managed to sneakily move into enemy territory.
Rotating back behind the enemy lines, Dilshad Shingali was taken aback.
It was actually the black people who brought the cannons over.
How could he tell? Well, they were locked up in chains and tied to the tree, but their backs had the pattern of a heavy object. He could see whip marks all over their bodies.
Looking at the cannon whose calibre was at least 12 kilogrammes, he immediately understood why the sentry towers could not resist the cannon fire. The border where the alliance of three nations had to guard is a very long border, almost 1500 km, so not every place is guarded so seriously. A few sentry towers made up of wood and a few cannons of 5kg calibre was all that was used.
Dilshad Shingali did not say anything anymore. He ordered for the soldiers to aim at the artillery men controlling the twelve kg calibre cannon, and he took aim at the man who looked like the leader of the enemy soldiers and decisively pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
"ahh!"
A couple of screams were immediately heard. One was from the artillery man who clutched his chest and fell down in his pool of blood, and the other was from the man who looked like the leader, but unfortunately the bullet seemed to have only grazed the man in his neck. He bent down at the last moment. He was injured, but not dead.
The enemy soldiers, noticing someone flanking them, immediately panicked and started to fire towards Dilshad Shingali.
"Not Good!" He jumped to his side as he rolled.
The two squadrons of men he had brought with him started to fire back at the enemy.
The soldiers at the main perimeter noticed the sudden screams coming from the opposite side. They didn't know what was happening, but they knew that it was the opportunity. The second lieutenant, who knew what the first lieutenant was up to, knew that time was precious. So he decisively ordered, Experience tales with empire
"Push forward!"
Eventually, the enemy was wiped out. Unfortunately, the casualties were great. Over 40 people died in the battle, with more than 60 being injured. First Lieutenant Dilshad Shingali was also injured as a bullet pierced through his bicep.
Of the two squadrons that went with him, only five remained alive.
However, no one complained since they did their job. They defended the perimeter, they eliminated the enemy, they stood alive and victorious.
A few minutes later, a man with the badge of a brigadier general arrived at the perimeter of the battle. He heard in detail about how the attack started and how it came to an end.
Cyrus Khodadadi stroked his chin as he thought deeply about what the intention of the Ottoman Empire was. He already forgot about the Takkalu family as he immediately relegated the Takkalu family as the puppets of the Ottomans in his mind.
A few minutes later, he came to a conclusion. "This was just a skirmish to test their battle theory, to see if it will work or not. Unfortunately," looking at the black people tied up to the trees, some dead, some barely alive, with a hint of pity in his eyes, "from the looks of it, it seems to have worked."
'Using black slaves as transport machines instead of horses or carriages, such treacherous bastards.'
"This can't be good," he muttered, because if they follow the traditional way and use horses for transportation, then the area where the attack would arrive could be predicted. But if they use the black slaves as logistic animals, then it is quite hard because humans are, at the end of the day, more flexible. They can travel in most places. This means in the whole border of 1400 kilometres, anywhere could be the target of the enemy.
"Lieutenant Colonel , send the report back to the command. The kingdoms and the empire have to see this."
