Chapter 681: Diversifying the crops

The royal carriage slowly came to a halt in front of the gigantic Mahagani wooden doors. Looking at the emblem of the Devaraya family, represented by the Shanku Chakra of Mahavishnu, the guards suddenly stiffened their backs. A guard with a serious expression on his face marched towards the carriage and opened the door with the utmost respect.
Vijay got down from the carriage, patted the royal guard on his back, and entered the palace.
"Empress, His Majesty has arrived."
Kavya's face immediately blossomed with a radiant smile. The pen she was holding slipped from her hand as she flew towards the entrance in a hurry. If not for the fact that she was wearing a saree, which was quite constraining to her, maybe she would even sprint to the door.
Vijay was absent-minded as he got home. His mind was still occupied with various ideas and plans now that the magic door of steam was forced open over a century earlier.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, he felt like he was tackled by someone. He was startled, but curiously enough, the person who tackled him did not seem to have any power. The person seemed to be quite petite.
Looking down, he saw a beautiful face with a distressed expression, which somehow made it even more cute.
Realising that it was Kavya, Vijay smiled. "I miss you too, honey!" he whispered in her ear.
Kavya didn't have anything to say. All she wanted to say was expressed by her actions. She simply kept silent and buried herself deeper into Vijay's arms.
Vijay originally wanted to take a bath since he was feeling very uncomfortable after the travel, but since Kavya was so enthusiastic, he simply kept quiet.
What's more, not seeing her for nearly 10 days had really left him with a lingering sensation.
So he simply picked up his wife and went into the bedroom.
Fortunately, the number of servants working in Shaurya Royal Palace was very small, so Vijay and Kavya did not have to be embarrassed when they showed their affection so openly.
Half a day later, Vijay came out of the bathroom refreshed. He was feeling hungry since he hadn't eaten anything since he came back, so he directly went to the dining room.
"Hey!"
To his surprise, he saw something that looked very familiar to him.
"What is this?" he enquired as he held a dark brown bar of sorts.
The resident baker smiled cheerfully. "A name has not been given to it yet, Your Majesty, but it is made from the exotic seed which was brought back from the Americas. At first, I thought that it was very bitter, but when I diluted it and added sugar, it was simply magical."
Vijay took a bite, and sure enough, it was chocolate. He did remember Marc Anthony Lopez bringing back a lot of cocoa beans from America, but he did not expect the baker to actually figure out how to make chocolate out of it.
Vijay felt the sweet and bitter sensation in his mouth and enjoyed the flavour, which he hadn't had for the last decade. Although the chocolate was not as refined as he had experienced in his last life, adding the factor of nostalgia and craving made up for the three or four points it was lacking.
"Let's call it chocolate. It's short and sweet."
---
Eating the chocolate, Vijay remembered that he still had a lot of things to handle which he had left unattended before he went into the research facility.
In the reluctant eyes of Kavya, he quickly left for the Simhasana Bhavana.
As soon as Vijay got to his office, he summoned Ganesh.
"Ganesh, have the reports been submitted by the Academy of Civilian Sciences about the tests conducted on the new variety of fruits and vegetables brought back from the Americas?"
Ganesh thought for a while as he tried to remember all the reports he had received since the previous week and nodded. "We have, Your Majesty. Would you like me to bring it?"
"Yes!"
Ganesh quickly went back to his office and brought back the report that Vijay had asked for.
Vijay quickly scanned the report and made sure that everything was alright. In all honesty, he really didn't need to see the report since he already knew what kind of crops should be planted in what kind of terrain, but he still had to follow the procedure so that in the future, if a new variety of crops is brought back from Africa or Australia, he does not have to personally point out where the crops should be planted.
"Call for the Minister of Agriculture. Oh, right..." Vijay looked at Ganesh with some inquiry.
Ganesh shook his head with a little disappointment on his face and distress in his eyes. "He is no more, Your Majesty. He just passed away a few hours ago."
Vijay suddenly became silent.
"Sigh!"
He let out a deep breath. He knew this was going to happen since he had already been told what to expect, but still, when it happened, he felt a little uncomfortable in his heart. The old man who was directly responsible for what could be considered the agricultural revolution of the Bharatiya Empire was no more.
"Declare tomorrow as a national holiday, publish the deeds throughout the empire, and hold a sending-off ceremony."
Ganesh nodded.
"I will immediately draft the order to relay to the parliament, Your Majesty."
"Good!" Vijay nodded.
"And have this directly mailed to the Ministry of Agriculture."
"The arrangements for the seeds from America are written in it."
"I'll get it done, Your Majesty," Ganesh nodded in seriousness.
Vijay tapped his table. He did not feel like doing any more work today, so he looked at Ganesh and asked, "Is there anything important for me to handle that I should do as soon as possible?"
Hearing the question, without hesitation, Ganesh nodded. "Your Majesty, Admiral Gangadhar has been pestering me almost daily to show you his report on the Type-A mines. He is in a hurry to put them in an actual combat scenario, Would you like me to bring the report?"
Vijay suddenly remembered the mines that he had ordered to be researched last year. Looking at Ganesh, he nodded. "Bring it."
As if he was waiting for it, Ganesh did not hesitate and pulled out the document from the list of documents he was holding. In fact, he had already brought along with him all the piled-up work His Majesty had to handle, but since His Majesty said that he would only handle the most urgent ones, he only took out the ones that had to be handled immediately.
Vijay quickly went through the report submitted by Gangadhar and was very satisfied.
"Looks like Manoj Reddy and his team have outdone themselves, haven't they?" He was very impressed by the power shown by the Type-A sea mine. Blasting up a Mughal battleship was no joke. Although Mughal warships are generally weaker than even the Ahom warships, it was still very impressive that the Type-A mine, weighing less than a hundred kilograms, was able to sink a warship weighing 600 tonnes.
Vijay quickly authorised the production of Type-A mines and for them to be used as defensive measures in strategically important locations like the first-tier military bases or the second-tier military bases.
---
The Vice Minister of Agriculture was not expecting to receive an order from His Majesty. He had never received such a thing. He had heard that Minister Narasimha used to get it, but now, since he is no more, it was his turn.
Thinking about Minister Narasimha, he felt a little sad and depressed since he was like a mentor to him, but in the end, people have to move on.
