Chapter 2: Chapter 2: A Gremlin Awakens
Eunha's eyes snapped open.
Golden irises gleamed like the sun peeking through dark clouds as she blinked, taking in her surroundings. The soft glow of morning light filtered through the lace curtains of their shared bedroom, casting warm patterns across the pink wallpaper adorned with cute animal stickers.
Eunha's gaze lingered on one particular sticker—a sleek black cat perched atop a crescent moon.
"Mmm… kitty..."
Her lips curled into a contented smile as she stretched, arms flailing lazily above her head. But then… she remembered.
"WAKE UP, EUNAH!"
The shriek that followed could have woken the dead.
Eunah, still in blissful slumber, was rudely yanked from her dreams by the force of a small body practically pouncing on her.
"Nngh—Wha…?"
"It's CAT TIME!" Eunha declared, her chaotic energy filling the room as she straddled Eunah's waist, her wild curls bouncing with each excited wiggle.
"Cat… what?" Eunah mumbled, her voice thick with sleep.
"You don't get it, Eunah!" Eunha's golden eyes sparkled with uncontainable excitement as she leaned down, nose practically touching her sister's. "What if today… is the day I awaken my Cat Queen powers?!"
"Cat Queen…" Eunah blinked, her expression a mix of confusion and resignation.
"YES!" Eunha threw her arms dramatically into the air, nearly toppling off her sister. "What if my powers let me talk to cats? Or… or maybe I can transform into one! A majestic black cat with fur as dark as midnight… Ruler of all felines…"
Eunah groaned, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
"Eunha, we're not even at the Awakening Ceremony yet," she mumbled.
"But what if I'm already feeling it?" Eunha dramatically clutched her chest, eyes closed as if she could sense some divine cat energy coursing through her tiny body.
"What if I'm… destined to be reborn as a cat in my next life?"
Eunah sighed, rolling her eyes as she gently pushed her gremlin of a sister off her.
"I'm going back to sleep," she muttered, turning over and pulling the blanket over her head.
"OH NO, YOU DON'T!"
Eunha was relentless.
"Wake up, wake up, wake up!" She bounced on the bed like a hyperactive kitten, tugging at the blanket with a strength that shouldn't have existed in such a tiny body.
"Eunha…" Eunah's voice was muffled under the covers.
"Eunah, do you think cats dream of being humans like I dream of being a cat?" Eunha asked, her tone suddenly philosophical.
"Eunha."
"Do you think if I study really hard about cats, I'll understand their secret language?"
"Eunha…"
"Or maybe if I meow in just the right way—"
"EUNHA!"
Eunah finally sat up, her patience hanging by a thread.
"What?" Eunha blinked innocently, her expression the picture of pure mischief.
"It's… barely morning," Eunah groaned, rubbing her temples. "Why are you like this?"
"Because…" Eunha's voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper.
"I saw a cat in my dreams last night."
Eunah gave her a blank stare.
"Eunha, you see cats in your dreams every night."
"But this time it was different!" Eunha's eyes widened with intensity. "She was a black cat, with golden eyes just like mine! She told me that something amazing is going to happen today."
Eunah raised an eyebrow, skeptical but too tired to argue.
"Uh-huh. And did this mystical dream-cat tell you to wake me up at dawn?"
"Well, no… but I figured we should get ready!"
"Ready for what?"
"The Awakening Ceremony, duh!" Eunha threw her hands in the air again, her curls bouncing wildly.
"We're gonna be late if we don't hurry!"
"The ceremony isn't until noon," Eunah deadpanned.
"But what if we get there early and… and there's a cat waiting for me?"
Eunah stared at her for a moment, then sighed in defeat. There was no winning against Eunha when she was like this.
"Fine," she mumbled, reluctantly crawling out of bed.
"Yay!" Eunha clapped her hands, already dashing toward the closet.
By the time they were both dressed and ready, Eunha was practically vibrating with excitement.
"Do you think I should bring a sketchbook?" she asked, stuffing random items into her tiny backpack.
"Why would you need a sketchbook?" Eunah blinked.
"To draw the cats I meet, obviously!"
"You're not going to the Awakening Ceremony to meet cats, Eunha."
"But what if they're there?"
Eunah pinched the bridge of her nose.
"You know what? Fine. Bring it."
"YES!" Eunha did a little victory dance, her curls bouncing as she spun around in circles.
When they finally made it downstairs, their parents were already waiting.
"Good morning, girls," their mother greeted them with a warm smile.
"Morning, Mom! Morning, Dad!" Eunah greeted politely.
"Mornin'!" Eunha chirped, practically skipping toward the dining table.
Their father glanced at the clock and raised an eyebrow.
"Up early today?"
"Eunha wouldn't let me sleep," Eunah muttered under her breath.
"I had important cat business to attend to!" Eunha declared proudly.
"Cat business…?" Their father blinked, clearly used to Eunha's antics but still surprised by her unwavering dedication.
"Don't ask," Eunah whispered, shaking her head.
As they ate breakfast, Eunha could barely sit still, her mind clearly racing a mile a minute. She kept glancing toward the door, as if expecting a parade of cats to burst through at any moment.
"Alright, girls," their mother said gently as she set down her cup of tea.
"We'll leave for the Awakening Center soon. Are you ready?"
Eunha practically bounced in her seat, her excitement barely contained.
"I'm so ready!"
Eunah, on the other hand, simply nodded, though her gaze lingered on her sister with a mixture of fondness and mild concern.
"Let's just hope we survive the day," she murmured under her breath.
Little did they know…
The real chaos was just beginning.
The Awakening Hall was bathed in a golden glow, its high ceilings adorned with ancient symbols that shimmered faintly with magic. Rows of parents and children filled the marble benches, all whispering in hushed excitement as the ceremony progressed.
Amid the crowd, Lee Hana sat with her hands clasped gently in her lap, her expression calm but her heart pounding with anticipation. Her dark hair was neatly pinned back, and her warm brown eyes never strayed far from her daughters.
Eunah and Eunha stood near the front, their small forms illuminated by the ethereal light cascading down from the crystal centerpiece of the hall.
"They've grown so much," Hana murmured softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Her husband, Lee Jisoo, gave her a reassuring smile, his hand gently resting over hers.
"They're ready," he said, his deep voice laced with quiet pride.
Hana's gaze remained on her daughters. Eunah stood tall, her posture graceful and composed—a natural elegance that always made her seem older than her years. Her long, silky black hair framed her delicate face, and her golden eyes—so much like her father's—were steady with quiet determination.
Beside her… was Eunha.
Hana's lips twitched, barely suppressing a smile as she watched her younger daughter bounce on her toes, her excitement barely contained. Eunha's unruly curls framed her face, and her wide, golden eyes darted around the hall as if searching for… well, probably a cat.
"She's definitely more excited about finding cats than awakening her powers," Hana murmured, her tone filled with fond exasperation.
Jisoo chuckled softly.
"That's our Eunha."
Hana's chest swelled with warmth as she watched them. They were so different, yet so inseparable—two halves of her heart.
"Next, Lee Eunah."
The High Priest's voice echoed through the hall, and all eyes turned toward her eldest daughter.
Hana held her breath as Eunah stepped forward, her steps steady and confident. Her heart clenched—not out of fear, but out of pride. She had no doubt that Eunah's Awakening would be something remarkable.
"You can do this, my sweet girl," Hana whispered under her breath.
Eunah stood before the crystal altar, her small hands gently placed on the smooth surface. The crystal—an ancient relic that had seen generations of Awakenings—glowed brighter as it responded to her touch.
For a moment, everything was still.
Then—
A radiant light burst forth, engulfing the hall in a divine glow. Gasps echoed through the crowd as the light shimmered and coalesced around Eunah, forming intricate patterns of gold and white.
"Oh…" Hana's eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat.
She recognized that light.
It was the light of a Goddess—a blessing so rare that it had only appeared in the most gifted of individuals.
As the light settled, the High Priest's voice resonated through the hall, filled with awe.
"Goddess's Blessing…"
Hana's hands flew to her mouth, tears welling in her eyes.
"She… she's truly blessed," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"Enhanced magical affinity," the High Priest continued, his voice reverent as he listed Eunah's awakened abilities.
"Especially with light and purification magic…"
Hana's chest swelled with overwhelming pride, her heart pounding as she watched her daughter bathed in divine light.
"She's so… strong," Jisoo murmured beside her, his own eyes wide with amazement.
"Memory Keeper," the High Priest announced next.
Hana's breath caught again.
"She can… retain knowledge of future events," he murmured, eyes narrowing as he examined the shimmering patterns in the crystal—the mark of foresight and wisdom.
"My Eunah…" Hana's heart swelled with pride and… something else. A pang of worry tugged at her, for such a gift often came with burdens. But she pushed that thought aside.
Her daughter was strong. Stronger than anyone could imagine.
"Barrier of Grace," the High Priest's final words echoed through the hall.
"A defense that no force can penetrate…"
Hana's tears finally spilled over.
"Oh, Eunah…" she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Her little girl—so brave, so bright, and now blessed with powers beyond imagination.
The divine glow faded as Eunah stepped back, her expression calm but her eyes shimmering with an unspoken determination.
Hana's heart ached with pride as she watched her daughter return to her place, her steps steady and her chin held high. Eunah glanced toward her parents, her golden eyes meeting Hana's.
Hana smiled through her tears, her love and pride shining through.
"You did so well, my sweet girl," she whispered, though Eunah couldn't hear her.
But somehow… Hana knew Eunah felt it.
As the applause echoed through the hall, Hana's gaze shifted to the next name on the High Priest's list.
"Lee Eunha."
Her heart skipped a beat.
Eunha—her little gremlin.
"Oh dear," Jisoo murmured softly, a hint of amusement in his tone.
"She's going to make a scene, isn't she?"
Hana let out a soft chuckle, wiping her tears as she turned her gaze to her younger daughter.
Eunha, who had been mesmerized by her sister's Awakening moments ago, was now… distracted.
Her golden eyes were darting around the hall, likely searching for anything remotely cat-related. Her tiny fingers traced invisible shapes in the air, clearly lost in a fantasy where she was a mighty Cat Queen.
"Eunha," Hana murmured softly under her breath, her lips twitching with affection.
"Hmm?" Eunha blinked, finally realizing her name had been called.
"Eunha," Eunah whispered softly, gently nudging her.
"Oh!"
Eunha's face lit up, her grin wide and excited as she bounced toward the altar.
Hana's heart swelled with warmth and… a tiny bit of concern.
"Please don't do anything too chaotic," she whispered under her breath, sending a silent prayer to the Goddess.
But deep down, Hana knew.
With Eunha…
Chaos was inevitable.
And yet…
Hana wouldn't have her any other way.
As Eunha stepped up to the crystal altar, her small hands brushing against the smooth surface, Hana's breath caught once more.
"Show me what lies in your heart, my little one," she murmured softly.
And then…
The world held its breath as Eunha's Awakening began.
Hana's heart was still pounding as she watched Eunha step onto the altar. The warmth of pride and wonder from Eunah's Awakening still lingered, but now—
Now, it was Eunha's turn.
"Oh no," Jisoo murmured beside her, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Oh yes," Hana replied softly, her lips twitching with barely suppressed amusement.
Their younger daughter—their chaotic little gremlin—stood before the crystal altar, her golden eyes wide with curiosity and mischief. Her small hands rested on the smooth surface, her tiny fingers tapping against the crystal as if testing its texture.
"Do you think she—"
"Shh," Hana murmured, her gaze never leaving Eunha.
For a moment, everything was still.
Eunha blinked, her expression serious—a rare sight—as the crystal began to glow beneath her touch.
Then—
BOOM.
A burst of dark energy erupted from the altar, swirling in chaotic tendrils of black and gold that danced around Eunha. Gasps echoed through the hall as the light twisted and shimmered, unlike anything anyone had seen before.
"What…?"
Hana's breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening as she watched the swirling energy coalesce around her daughter. The patterns weren't like the divine light that had enveloped Eunah—no, this was… wilder. Untamed.
It was… chaotic.
"Oh dear," Hana murmured under her breath.
"Cat's Grace," the High Priest's voice echoed through the hall, laced with bewilderment.
Hana's lips parted as the first ability was revealed.
"Enhanced agility, flexibility, and reflexes," the priest continued, his eyes narrowing as he examined the swirling energy.
"But…"
Before he could finish, Eunha—completely unaware of the weight of the moment—wiggled her toes and pounced forward.
"Whoa!"
She somersaulted, her tiny body twisting with impossible grace—only to land flat on her face.
A loud thud echoed through the hall.
"Oww…" Eunha mumbled, her face squished against the marble floor.
Hana's head dropped into her hands as the crowd murmured softly.
"She's definitely got the 'cat' part down," Jisoo whispered, barely containing his laughter.
"Shadow Prowl," the High Priest announced, his voice filled with even more confusion.
"Blends into the shadows…"
Before he could finish, Eunha—still lying on the floor—vanished.
Hana's eyes widened as her daughter's small form melted into the shadows, only to reappear a moment later… behind the High Priest.
"BOO!"
The poor man jumped, nearly dropping his staff.
"What in the—"
Giggles echoed through the hall as Eunha bounced back to her original spot, her grin wide and mischievous.
Hana's exasperated sigh was drowned out by Jisoo's barely suppressed laughter.
"Feline Whispers," the High Priest's voice trembled slightly as he continued, clearly unsure what to expect next.
"The ability to communicate with cats…"
Hana barely had time to register the words before Eunha's eyes lit up like stars.
"I CAN TALK TO CATS?!"
Her delighted squeal echoed through the hall, and before anyone could stop her, she spun around to the nearest open window.
"KITTY FRIENDS!"
The energy that swirled around her pulsed—and suddenly, the sound of meowing filled the air.
"Oh no…" Hana's heart dropped.
Through the open window, a parade of cats—dozens of them—began pouring into the hall. Stray cats of all sizes and colors swarmed toward Eunha, meowing and purring as they circled her like worshippers paying homage to their queen.
"Cat Magnetism," the High Priest muttered, his expression utterly baffled.
"She… attracts cats… unnaturally."
Eunha—now surrounded by a small army of cats—was laughing with unrestrained joy, her hands petting as many as she could at once.
"Oh, you're so cute!" she cooed, her voice full of adoration.
"You're Mr. Whiskers… and you're Princess Paws…"
Hana pressed her fingers to her temple, feeling a headache forming.
"We're never going to hear the end of this," Jisoo murmured softly, his tone filled with barely contained amusement.
"Not until she starts a cat revolution," Hana replied with a weary sigh.
"Claws of Chaos," the High Priest announced, his voice almost resigned at this point.
"Claws?" Eunha perked up.
A gleam of excitement lit her eyes as she examined her small hands.
"Like a real cat?"
She flexed her fingers—and her nails elongated, sharp and glinting like polished obsidian.
"Oooooh…"
A delighted grin spread across her face as she swung her tiny claws through the air, making playful swiping motions.
"Nyah! Nyah!"
She twirled, pretending to be a fierce predator—only to accidentally swipe at a stray cat tail, which earned her an indignant meow.
"Sorry, Mr. Mittens!"
Hana groaned softly, her head falling back as she closed her eyes.
"This… is my life now," she murmured, her voice filled with loving resignation.
As the crystal's glow finally faded, the High Priest looked… utterly exhausted.
"Lee Eunha…" His voice was barely above a whisper as he looked at the chaos left in her wake.
Eunha, still surrounded by her loyal feline followers, turned back toward her parents with the widest, most innocent grin imaginable.
"Mama, Papa…" Her eyes sparkled with excitement.
"I CAN TALK TO CATS!"
Hana took a deep breath, her smile strained but filled with love.
"Eunah," she murmured softly, turning to her elder daughter who had been watching in silent amazement.
"Yes, Mama?"
"Go get your sister," Hana said with a tired sigh.
"And… maybe help her say goodbye to her new friends?"
Eunah gave a small, understanding smile as she stood up.
"Come on, Eunha," she called gently.
Eunha—the newly crowned Queen of Cats—blinked, her grin unwavering as she waved to her feline subjects.
"Bye, my loyal subjects!"
The cats meowed in response, as if giving her a royal send-off.
Hana's heart was full—of love, of pride, and of an overwhelming sense of… exhaustion.
"We're definitely going to need a bigger house," she murmured softly, watching her daughters walk back toward her, one calm and composed, the other surrounded by a parade of cats.
And somehow…
Hana wouldn't change a thing.
