Reborn as the Blissful Wife in the countryside

Chapter 343: Displeasure

Yuan Lao Rong's wife laughed. Gu Dagui's wife is really amusing; nearly every sentence she says is praising Gu Yumei, and it's quite excessive praise at that.

It seems that the head of the household was right; Gu Dafu and Gu Dagui are very close, and Mrs. Chen, as their aunt, is also good, very protective of Gu Dafu's two children.

However, Gu Yumei did not feel that Mrs. Chen cherished her. Seeing her praise herself so much, she could only think that Mrs. Chen wanted to quickly get rid of her by pushing her out of the house.

Thinking this way, she felt upset, thinking that Mrs. Chen wanted to marry her off soon, which is why she did not help her find better suitors and kept pushing her towards the Yuan Family.

"Sister Mei, what are you daydreaming about? Hurry up and go to the kitchen to get some food, let your Aunt Yuan and sister-in-law Yuan taste some special snacks from our shop," Mrs. Chen urged Gu Yumei, almost wishing she could slap her. Damn it, she was working her butt off, smiling and finding people for her, and yet she still had time to zone out and didn't even hear what she had said earlier.

Although Gu Yumei disliked the Yuan Family, she did not want to lose face in front of the Yuan Family people. She smiled, got up, and left the family hall to go to the shop in front.

Watching Gu Yumei walk away, Yuan Lao Rong's wife turned to Mrs. Chen and said, "Sister Mei is really quite and gentle, she doesn't seem to talk much."

Her second son needed to continue the Chang family's lineage, and his wife must be able to uphold the family, not be a dull person.

Mrs. Chen was shrewd and caught the hint in Yuan Lao Rong's wife's words, and explained with a smile, "It's her first time meeting sister-in-law Yuan, so she is shy. Usually at home, she talks a lot, sometimes even I find her noisy."

Third Grandma also wanted Gu Yumei to marry into the Yuan Family, as the Yuan Family was quite decent, so she helped Mrs. Chen by saying, "Sister Mei talked a little less today, but normally at home and in the village, she is quite communicative."

Once Gu Yumei left the family hall, her face fell. She walked to the shop's kitchen and said to Gu Jinxiu, who was packing seasoned dishes for customers, "Elder Yuan's mother-in-law and daughter-in-law will have a meal in the family hall. Second Aunt asked me to bring a table of dishes. Please prepare one dish of each kind from the shop, I will take them to the family hall."

After speaking, she sat down on a stool under the kitchen porch to rest.

Gu Jinli, who was returning from delivering seasoned dishes to a customer with Luo Huiniang, heard this and kicked the stool on which Gu Yumei sat, angrily said, "Who are you talking to? Is my sister your servant? Second Aunt told you to fetch the dishes, so just do it yourself. Do you still need your hands, or should I chop them off for you?"

Gu Jinli was quite upset. Gu Yumei always targeted the weak; seeing that his sister was easy-going, she always ordered her around. There were people in this kitchen, including the Yan mother and daughter-in-law and Ms. Chu, but she didn't ask them.

Luo Huiniang laughed happily, teasing Gu Yumei, "That's what you get for messing with Xiao Yu."

"You, you guys!" Gu Yumei was nearly driven to tears, but since she couldn't afford to offend Gu Jinli, she could only hold back her tears and went to fetch the seasoned dishes herself, slicing and plating. It took over a quarter of an hour to get a full table of dishes ready; it took her three trips to carry all the dishes.

Yuan Lao Rong's wife was quite satisfied upon seeing this, thinking the girl was quiet and a bit delicate, but she was capable of getting the work done.

However, just as Yuan Lao Rong's wife mentally praised Gu Yumei, Mrs. Yuan Xu started to dislike Gu Yumei.

The reason was Gui Niu.

Gui Niu, the child who craved meat, saw Gu Yumei carrying plates of meat and immediately ran over to hug her legs, begging for some meat.

Gu Yumei was proud and aloof, always disdainful of the children from several families. Suddenly hugged by Gui Niu around her legs, she felt as if her leg was smeared with saliva and disgustingly shook her leg instinctively. Although the movement wasn't large, it still caused Gui Niu to stagger, squatting down and sitting on the ground.

Mrs. Yuan Xu was startled, rushing over to help Gui Niu.

Gu Yumei was also scared, fearing that the Yuan Family would despise her. She quickly placed the tray on the table, turned around and hugged Gui Niu, saying guiltily, "Gui Niu, I'm sorry, did that hurt? Sister Yu Mei didn't mean to do it, I was carrying hot soy milk on the tray and was afraid you'd rush over and get scalded by the hot soy milk, that's why, that's why... please don't blame Sister Yu Mei."

Gui Niu, who was not close with Gu Yumei, struggled and escaped her embrace, throwing herself into Mrs. Yuan Xu's arms.

Gui Niu was very sensible, not crying or speaking ill of Gu Yumei, but Mrs. Yuan Xu still found herself disliking Gu Yumei.

Mrs. Chen was talking to Yuan Lao Rong's wife when she heard the noise and hastily looked over, asking, "What happened?"

Gu Yumei knew she could not hide the incident, so she confessed what had just happened. With her head lowered and eyes red, she said guiltily, "It was my fault, I shouldn't have moved so sharply, I knocked Gui Niu down."

Mrs. Chen reprimanded Gu Yumei, "To be so careless at your age." She then worriedly said to Yuan Lao Rong's wife, "Look at her, always so impulsive and anxious, it really worries me."

Yuan Lao Rong's wife, being a kind person, saw Gu Yumei's frightened face with red eyes, and smiled, "The girl is still young, she will be steadier in a couple of years. Besides, Sister Mei didn't do it on purpose, it's alright."

Seeing that Yuan Lao Rong's wife was genuinely not just being polite, Mrs. Chen breathed a sigh of relief, thinking to herself how scared she was, fearing that Yuan Lao Rong's wife would disdain Gu Yumei and ruin the good relationship.

"What are you still standing here for? Go to the front shop and call Granny Yan to come eat, she has been busy all morning and being old, she must be hungry," suggested Mrs. Chen to Gu Yumei, providing her a way out to leave and avoid further embarrassment.

"Yes, I'll go now." Gu Yumei said to Gui Niu, who was still nestled in Mrs. Yuan Xu's arms, "Gui Niu, you can sit with sister-in-law Yuan first, Sister Yu Mei will go call your granny in, and then we can eat together."

Having said that, she hurried off to call someone.

Seeing her finally act sensibly, Mrs. Chen felt her annoyance significantly lessen.

Not long after, Gu Yumei accompanied Granny Yan to the back house, joining Yuan Family's mother and daughter-in-law for a meal.

In the front shop wing, Scholar Wan and his son felt awkward as Village Chief Shang and Scholar Shang paid them little attention, and originally the brothers Gu Dafu, who were dining with them, had also left to talk with the three men of the Yuan Family, which was quite disheartening.

Scholar Wan felt his dignity was being challenged. Turning away from everyone, he silently snorted and nudged Wan Lifang with his elbow, signaling him to bid farewell.

Wan Lifang initially pretended not to see, but after Scholar Wan nudged him a couple more times, he had no choice but to stand up and said to Third Grandpa and others, "Grandpa Gu, Uncles of Gu Family, my father has classes this afternoon, so we must take our leave now. We will come again soon to ask for forgiveness, and we hope Grandpa Gu and Uncles of Gu Family won't take offense."

Though Third Grandpa felt that Scholar Wan was somewhat pedantic and arrogant, he knew better than to offend a scholar, so he smiled and said, "It's been busy today, and we couldn't entertain Scholar Wan properly. Next time Scholar Wan and Young Master Wan have time to come over, we will prepare the best array of marinated dishes to entertain you."
