Chapter 790: Calm Smiles, Hidden Sparks ( 790 )
Erinnette's sharp eyes swept across the room, catching sight of every one of Young Master Javier's future brides still inside.
She exhaled a long sigh, her gaze shifted to Liana and Gloria.
"A word with you two?"
"Yes, Mrs. Erinnette," they replied in unison, bowing politely.
Without another word, the head maid turned.
Liana and Gloria exchanged a brief glance, then followed quietly behind her, closing the door gently.
After stepping into the quiet corridor.
Erinnette turned sharply, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the two women before her.
"What's with your maid dress not kept? Is this how the personal maids of Young Master Javier present themselves? Hmm?"
Liana and Gloria froze.
"Do you two need to undergo more maid training again?"
In a rush, both of them bent slightly, fumbling to straighten their skirts, fix their collars, and smooth out the wrinkles in their uniforms.
"N-no, Mrs. Erinnette!" Liana said quickly, her voice soft but hurried.
"It won't happen again," Gloria murmured, adjusting her glasses with one hand while tugging her apron into perfect alignment with the other.
Erinnette's arms folded neatly across her chest.
"Just because you two serve as Young Master Javier's personal maids, does not mean you are permitted to become easygoing."
Both Liana and Gloria stood stiff, hands folded before them, eyes lowered in respect.
"A maid of Armand must never forget her duty. Discipline, etiquette, and composure are not luxuries, they are necessities. You are not merely attendants to one household; you represent the dignity of this family wherever you walk."
Her voice firmed, each word measured.
"Your posture must remain straight, your speech must remain proper, and your attire must remain immaculate. A wrinkle in your uniform, a careless tone, even a fleeting lapse in manners, these things are not small. They are flaws, and flaws reflect upon the Young Master you serve."
Liana and Gloria both bowed slightly, murmuring together, "Yes, Mrs. Erinnette."
Erinnette continued, her eyes narrowing.
"When standing beside nobles, you do not speak unless addressed. When walking, you match your Master's pace, not ahead, not lagging behind. When receiving guests, you bow at the proper angle, and when serving, you do so with precision and silence. These rules you know… yet I remind you, because they must never slip from habit."
"Remember this: respect is earned not only by strength or loyalty, but by the smallest details. And if either of you forget… then it is I who will retrain you, until you do not."
Erinnette's tone grew sharper, her eyes narrowing further.
"Just because Young Master has promised you two will be his future wives does not mean you may forget your present standing. You are still maids of this household. And more than that, you serve the Young Master, the future heir of Armand."
Liana and Gloria both stiffened, their heads lowering.
"Do not let that promise cloud your discipline," Erinnette pressed.
"A wife may walk beside him as equal, but a maid must always serve with loyalty and care. You are both bound by both duties, and neither can be neglected."
Her gaze flicked between the two of them.
"And does having royal blood change this?" she asked coldly.
"You, Liana. You, Gloria. Nieces of Queen Mylezra herself. Do you think such lineage excuses you from your role? That royal blood alone will protect you from scrutiny?"
Both shook their heads quickly, voices soft but firm.
"No, Mrs. Erinnette."
Erinnette's voice pressed on, steady and unyielding.
"The training you have undergone is not merely to prepare you to serve House Armand. It is to shape who you are. Discipline is not just a duty, it is character. The posture you hold, the words you choose, the care you put into the smallest tasks, these things do not end when the uniform is removed. They become a part of you."
Her eyes locked on them both, sharp as ever.
"A maid who learns patience does not lose her temper when tested. A maid who learns precision does not falter when the moment demands perfection. A maid who learns silence understands when words should be withheld. This is why the training is hard, and why it never ends. It is not simply for the household's honor, it is for your own."
She drew in a calm breath, her voice lowering.
"You will carry these habits all your lives, whether here, as maids of Armand… or later, as wives, mothers, and figures others will look upon. That is why I demand no carelessness from you. Not one mistake."
Liana and Gloria bowed deeply.
"Yes, Mrs. Erinnette. We understand."
"Now, both of you,listen carefully."
Liana and Gloria stiffened at once, their posture straight as their eyes fixed on Erinnette.
"Since Lord Garius will be attending the royal council," Erinnette began, her voice steady but sharp, "our lord has decided to bring all of his sons to this meeting."
The two exchanged a quick glance, then returned their focus forward.
"Lord Garius has ordered me to inform each of their personal maids, that only one maid will accompany each master to the council in the royal capital."
Liana and Gloria's hearts tightened, though their faces remained composed.
"The rest," Erinnette continued, "will remain here in the household, maintaining their duties. This is not a request, it is an order. Only one may stand at his side, while the others ensure stability within the estate."
Her eyes narrowed slightly, lingering on both of them.
"Do you understand what this means?"
"Yes, Mrs. Erinnette," both Liana and Gloria answered in unison, their voices firm though their hearts tensed.
"Good…" Erinnette nodded once, then let her gaze rest on them both.
"Now...who will attend, and who will remain, will be decided by you yourselves. Do not be loud. Do not quarrel."
The two maids glanced at each other, their expressions calm on the surface but sparks flickering faintly in their eyes.
"I will not make this decision, even if I wished to," Erinnette continued.
"This is Lord Garius's order. It is to ensure that each personal maid understands her place, her role, and her responsibility."
"We understand, Mrs. Erinnette."
Erinnette turned on her heel and departed, her steps fading down the corridor.
Liana and Gloria bowed deeply in respect until the sound of her footsteps vanished.
The moment the silence settled, Liana lifted her head, her serene eyes sliding toward Gloria.
Gloria met her gaze without hesitation, adjusting her glasses.
Both smirked.
Both folded their arms across their chests.
