Chapter 388: Chapter 387: Knight "Giant"
"Roar!"
In an instant, the fanatic nun swelled grotesquely into a massive tumor of flesh. Her once-calm expression twisted into agony as she let out a harrowing wail.
Thud, thud!
Four covert forward operatives and ten Inquisition agents immediately advanced, aiming their weapons at the grotesque mass. Equipped with nano-combat suits, the operatives had little concern about potential explosions releasing "corruption viruses" from Heaven. Similarly, the Inquisition agents, clad in simplified Mk-IV power armor, were equally prepared to ensure their safety.
The operatives and agents formed a protective "human wall" to shield the evacuating civilians from the threat.
Meanwhile, the bio-division, having anticipated the Church or Heaven resorting to bioweapons akin to the Black Grail, dispatched specially outfitted technicians. These individuals, donning specialized hazmat suits, approached the tumor with various instruments to extract samples and assess containment measures.
Among the fleeing civilians, Clonto found himself reassured by the Empire's swift response. Dragging his younger sister Carrie away from the cathedral, he couldn't resist glancing back, curiosity tugging at him.
The technicians, focused and unarmed, were working to collect tissue samples and slow the tumor's growth. Once Clonto and Carrie reached the cathedral's main square, they lost sight of the chaotic scene inside.
Turning his head forward—
Boom, boom!
He saw two towering squad guards, armed with massive shields and plasma rifles, striding past with heavy steps. They stationed themselves at the cathedral's entrance, ensuring no civilians remained inside before ducking through the doors with their considerable bulk.
From Clonto's vantage point, he could only see their backs, not the grotesque transformation taking place deeper within.
"Attention, everyone!"
At that moment, a bio-division technician's voice came over the loudspeakers:
"The Imperial Cathedral is under biological attack from the Church. The Bio-Division will now implement containment and quarantine measures.
We urge all present to remain calm. Even if the Church and Heaven resort to madness and revenge, the Empire will do everything in its power to ensure your safety. Please stay orderly and follow Imperial instructions."
Hearing the announcement, Clonto looked around. He noticed white tents bearing the red-and-white "Λ" logo had been set up across the square, with hard-light barriers marking the perimeter.
Additionally, over a hundred auxiliary troops wielding hard-light weaponry and several heavily armored Greek demigods had quietly taken up positions. These forces coordinated with technicians and synthetic personnel from the bio-division to guide residents into designated quarantine tents.
Having undergone registration and blood sample collection earlier in the month, Clonto quickly realized the Empire was conducting thorough screenings to ensure none of them had been affected by the grotesque "tumor."
Even the departing fanatic believers were immediately apprehended, bound, and loaded into Pelican transports by auxiliary troops. Clonto didn't know these individuals were Church loyalists intent on undermining the town.
However, he did understand one thing: the Empire didn't act without reason. Whatever had happened inside the cathedral was undoubtedly linked to those captured.
"Brother, what's going on? Why is everyone so panicked?" Carrie clung tightly to Clonto's arm, her young mind struggling to grasp the situation.
"Just follow the crowd. It'll be fine."
Clonto patted her head reassuringly.
"Okay…" Carrie nodded hesitantly.
The siblings followed the auxiliary troops' guidance to a tent on the eastern edge of the square. A synthetic technician with a kind demeanor approached them, preparing to conduct a preliminary scan to ease their fears.
However—
Thwip! Thwip!
Bang—Whoosh!
Suddenly, the sound of intense gunfire erupted from the cathedral. The sharp cracks of hard-light weapons and the distinct hum of plasma rifles filled the air.
The technician quickly set aside their scanner and hurriedly ushered Clonto and Carrie into the quarantine tent for protection.
Inside the cathedral, the fanatic nun had ballooned into a tumor over ten meters in diameter.
The forward operatives, Inquisition agents, and squad guards opened fire after the bio-technicians completed their sample collection. Based on past encounters with corrupted Greek gods and the New Mombasa Incident, the agents suspected the grotesque transformation might be part of a sacrificial ritual to summon a being from Heaven.
Prepared for the worst, the seasoned operatives and guards braced themselves for the arrival of a "Heavenly creature."
Finally, the grotesque tumor reached its limit and burst from within.
A foul stench filled the cathedral as viscous, blood-red liquid splattered across the walls and armored personnel. Pieces of flesh and tissue were strewn everywhere.
Amid the carnage, a hulking "knight" emerged from the center of the remains.
Even crouching, the knight's towering form exceeded five meters. The squad guards immediately estimated it was taller than their primarch, Lion El'Jonson, with a more muscular physique. The knight's bright crimson armor exuded an artistic craftsmanship rarely seen.
But it was missing a head.
Before the knight could rise fully, the squad guards fired plasma bolts at its massive body. The forward operatives and Inquisition agents joined in, unloading hard-light rounds in an attempt to suppress the creature.
Humm—Bang!
To their dismay, the projectiles were deflected by an invisible protective field, leaving the knight unharmed.
Slowly, the headless knight stood to its full height, towering over its attackers.
The squad guards wasted no time. Dropping their plasma rifles, they drew power swords and chainswords, advancing with deliberate steps. Their metallic voices rang out:
"Fall back! This is no enemy you can handle!"
"Alert Athena! She must respond!"
Positioning themselves on either side of the knight, the guards moved with blinding speed, their strikes creating shockwaves and afterimages as they targeted its legs.
Clang! Crash!
The headless knight swung its enormous sword with even greater force, sending both guards flying.
Physically launched, they crashed through the cathedral's walls, their weapons disarmed mid-flight.
!!!
Realizing the battle was hopeless, the forward operatives and Inquisition agents opted for a tactical retreat, quickly exiting the cathedral.
Upon reaching the square, they uploaded their footage to the Universe 13 Forward Base. The communications officer, seeing the overwhelming power of the knight, immediately escalated the report to Colonel John "Soap" MacTavish and Squad Leader Garan Clovis.
Athena, currently pursuing remnants of Hell in the Middle East, would be notified and deployed to the town without delay.
For now, the task was to hold off the knight and protect the civilians. Towns could be rebuilt, but lives lost could not be restored—unless the Emperor himself intervened, expending his psychic energy to resurrect the dead.
The Inquisition, understanding the flow of souls to Hell, theorized that the Emperor could retrieve those in Limbo. However, requiring the Emperor to intervene directly would signify failure on their part.
Back in the square, chaos erupted as the headless knight smashed through the cathedral doors, emerging into the open. Its massive form loomed over the terrified townsfolk, sending them into a frenzy.
Auxiliary troops continued their efforts to evacuate civilians, while seven Greek demigods, armed with shields and spears, approached the knight.
The two squad guards, regaining their composure, retrieved their weapons and charged at the knight's back with renewed determination.
"Die, scum!"
"Face us!"
Enraged, the guards shouted with metallic echoes as they reengaged.
The demigods, maintaining formation, pressed forward with their shields to restrict the knight's movements while stabbing at it with spears forged by the Emperor himself.
Clang! Boom!
The clash of giants filled the square, their movements too fast for ordinary human eyes to follow.
"Brother! It's looking at us!"
Carrie's frightened voice snapped Clonto's attention.
Turning to look, Clonto and others noticed the knight seemed to focus on them—despite its lack of a head.
"Run!" shouted Clonto, scooping up Carrie and bolting as the knight began striding toward them.
Boom—Crash!
Just as Clonto felt the weight of despair, another towering figure, five meters tall, stepped onto the square to confront the knight.
