Chapter 326: The Mother-in-Law's Rebuke (Second Update)
Fang Pingying looked at Zhou Yunmei with a faint smile, "Mom, you're not someone who can be easily bullied. Even my mom, no matter how eloquent she is, wouldn't dare to bully you."
For the first time, Fang Pingying openly admitted that Li Aihua was her mother. Although she didn't say it face-to-face, Li Aihua was immediately moved to the point that her eyes turned red, and she stared at Fang Pingying for a long time without being able to say anything.
Fang Pingying had actually just said it without thinking, but since she had decided to forgive, there was nothing else to agonize over, looking at Li Aihua, she smiled.
Zhou Yunmei, however, was unaware of the issues between this mother and daughter. Seeing Fang Pingying's disrespect towards Li Aihua right in front of her, she became so angry that she yelled out, "Fang Pingying, you..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Li Aihua impatiently shouted, "Lower your voice, don't scare my girl and the two little treasures in her belly."
"You..." Zhou Yunmei was so angry she felt like coughing up blood and had to summon help again, "Old man..."
"Alright, alright, stop making a fuss." Luo Dashan was a peaceable man, who wasn't prone to arguing, and since this was his first time meeting Li Aihua, he wasn't going to start an argument. He called out to Zhou Yumei to stop her, then turned to Li Aihua with a smile and said politely, "You must be the mother-in-law. I am Zhiyong's dad; this is our first time meeting. Please, have a seat."
After he finished speaking, Luo Dashan instructed Luo Honglan, who was busying herself in the kitchen, to pour Li Aihua a cup of tea.
Li Aihua saw that Luo Dashan seemed to be a decent person, so she treated him with courtesy.
Following Luo Dashan's invitation, she sat down on the couch and glanced at Zhou Yunmei beside him, then asked with a sarcastic smile, "Mother-in-law, how long are you planning to stay in the provincial city this time? If it's going to be a while, Pingying's place here is small, where will you be staying?"
Luo Dashan was taken aback. He didn't understand the meaning of Li Aihua's words. Was she trying to drive him away?
Fang Pingying felt that Luo Dashan had always been good to her and felt uncomfortable with the way Li Aihua was treating him, so she gently nudged Li Aihua.
Li Aihua got the hint and quickly smoothed things over, "Mother-in-law, what I mean is, if you're staying here for a long time, Pingying can stay with me at night when she's here during the day. I'm worried there may not be enough space here for all of you."
Although the words were clearly meant to appease, they allowed Luo Dashan to feel more at ease. He smiled and said, "No need, we'll be heading back tomorrow."
Zhou Yunmei, however, heard in Li Aihua's words an intention to send them away and protested angrily, "What do you mean heading back tomorrow? I won't go back. I've said I'm here to look after Pingying, and after she gives birth, I still need to take care of my two grandsons."
Li Aihua looked at her with a faint smile, "Mother-in-law, if you truly wish to take care of your grandsons, why not come after the children are born? My daughter, I can take care of her myself."
"Hmph, don't make it sound so nice. You say you'll take care, but can you do it for a lifetime? You've only just acknowledged your daughter, so now you're fussing over her. But when you find it bothersome later on, you won't talk this way anymore," Zhou Yunmei said with sudden spite, then smirked at Li Aihua, "If you really treasure her so much, would you have abandoned your daughter to begin with, leaving the Fang Family to raise her?"
"I don't need to explain the past to you, but I'm telling you now, if I say I can take care, then I can, and what's wrong with a lifetime?" Mentioned past haunted Li Aihua's expression, and her words became sharper, "Moreover, let me tell you, even if my situation was worse, I've never troubled or burdened my daughter and her family."
"Firstly, my spouse and I both work, and even when we retire, we'll have a pension. We don't need financial support from them. Unlike you, who keep asking them for money. They're young and will have many expenses in the future. Haven't you ever considered how difficult their lives might be because of that?"
Li Aihua's words were sharp, but she wasn't wrong.
This made Zhou Yunmei and Luo Dashan feel somewhat ashamed. In Zhou Yunmei's heart, she always felt that Luo Zhiyong and his wife had an easier life, so she couldn't wait to pinch more out of them.
Even Luo Dashan, although not as excessive as Zhou Yunmei, had to admit that, to be frank, he had never done anything for Luo Zhiyong and his wife; on the contrary, he had been taking money from them on time every month. When this was pointed out by the mother-in-law, he felt a lack of face.
After a pause, Li Aihua continued, "What's more important is that our family does not have as many troubles as the Luo Family. Just look at how many days you've been in the provincial city, and how many leaves Zhiyong has had to take from the military. Do you really think that the military is owned by the Luo Family, where you can come and go as you please, and take leave whenever you want?"
"Let me tell you, if you keep staying here and get into cahoots with your younger son, stirring up trouble, if you truly tarnish Zhiyong's reputation, you might just ruin his future prospects."
Li Aihua is a university professor, eloquent by nature and knowledgeable. Her casual remarks hit several of Zhou Yunmei's sore spots.
Firstly, Zhou Yunmei and her husband didn't have money, and indeed caused trouble for their son and daughter-in-law. Li Aihua, on the other hand, could still be a great help to the couple. By comparison, Zhou Yunmei really had nothing to say.
Secondly, Luo Zhiyong's career.
Especially Luo Zhiyong's career, which Zhou Yunmei valued most and was most proud of. If her actions really messed it up, she feared not only that Luo Zhiyong would not forgive her, but even Luo Dashan would no longer live with her.
Zhou Yunmei's face changed color on the spot because Luo Zhiyong had indeed taken several leaves recently because of their visit.
She was worried in her heart, but retorted stubbornly to Li Aihua, "Who are you trying to scare? How would you know so much about the military?"
"Mom, Aunt Li's husband is a military commander, he seems to be some sort of high-ranking officer. Even big brother has to salute him," whispered Luo Honglan to Zhou Yunmei.
Luo Honglan didn't like Zhou Yunmei being here either. Since her arrival, she had not only been causing trouble but also constantly asking Luo Honglan for money—five or ten yuan at a time, and had asked for dozens already. Luo Honglan was also annoyed with her, wishing she would leave sooner.
So, while this was ostensibly advice, it was actually in support of Li Aihua's remarks.
After hearing Luo Honglan's words, Zhou Yunmei's mouth fell open, and she was at a loss for words, not expecting Li Aihua's family background to be so good, "Ah..."
Luo Honglan continued to persuade in a low voice, "Mom and Dad, what Aunt Xin said is really not wrong, after all, big brother is also Aunt Li's son-in-law, she definitely wishes the best for him too."
Zhou Yunmei didn't say anything further, but Luo Dashan stood up from the sofa, as if making a resolute decision, and said to Fang Pingying and Li Aihua, "Mother-in-law, we've understood what you said. We won't disturb Zhiyong and his family anymore, we'll go back to our hometown tomorrow."
"I..."
Seeing Zhou Yunmei still wanted to argue, Luo Dashan glared at her, somewhat angrily said, "Stop talking, go pack your things, we're leaving first thing tomorrow morning."
