Chapter 258: Getting Divorced Tomorrow
Before Zhou Yunmei could speak, Luo Dashan suddenly looked at her and bellowed, "If you keep talking, from now on you can live with your money."
After a brief pause, Luo Dashan continued, "Don't think I don't know, this morning Zhiyong came here for money, in such a critical situation, yet you were still reluctant to pay. I didn't have time to come over then, or else you would have tried it."
"Try what?" In all his life, Luo Dashan had never been so domineering in front of Zhou Yunmei. How could she stand it? She glared at him and pushed Luo Dashan away with annoyance, "What are you trying to do, you want to hit me?"
Luo Dashan didn't bother with her push, but still spoke in an irrefutable tone, "Zhou Yunmei, I can give in to you on other matters, whatever you want, but not this one. We must provide the money for our second brother to see the doctor. Find out how much is needed, and if it's not enough, tell second brother's family who covered it for now, and we will help pay it back later."
Right after Luo Dashan's words fell, they heard Qiu Xiu's voice in the courtyard, "No need, big brother, I borrowed the money from my maiden family's side, you all don't need to worry."
Qiu Xiu had roughly heard the situation in the courtyard earlier and never intended to have Luo Dashan's family help with the money. She felt that Fang Pingying's temporary covering of the expenses was already a big favor, so she didn't plan to argue with Zhou Yunmei.
"Here you are." Luo Dashan felt somewhat awkward seeing Qiu Xiu had heard everything and did not want to argue anymore. He then called out to Qiu Xiu and Yu'er, "Let's eat first, we can talk about the money later."
Afterward, noticing that Yu Fen hadn't arrived, Luo Dashan asked, "What's the matter, where is your Yu Fen?"
"Yu Fen is pregnant and has already gone to sleep, leave her be." The truth was that Yu Fen had almost gotten into a fight with Cui Lan that morning, and she didn't want to come over.
Qiu Xiu also knew she was a difficult person to deal with, prone to saying harsh words, so she didn't insist on her coming.
Hearing that Yu Fen had gone to sleep, Luo Dashan didn't say much else, but simply called out, "Let's eat, eat first."
Qiu Xiu and the others sat down as told, but Zhou Yunmei stood still, unmoved from where she had been.
Luo Dashan asked someone to call her. She retorted unsatisfiedly, "Our entire savings are being drained, what meal is there to eat..."
Seeing that Zhou Yunmei intended to make a scene with Qiu Xiu's child present, Luo Dashan glared fiercely and shouted, "Zhou Yunmei, behave yourself. Second brother's family is here for a meal. Be a good hostess, or I won't indulge you this time."
Zhou Yunmei, seeing Luo Dashan seemed genuinely angry, dared not to act up anymore.
For so many years, she understood Luo Dashan's temperament. The things he didn't care about, she could do whatever she wanted, no matter how excessive. But there were some lines she couldn't cross, or divorce could be possible.
So, she fell silent and walked towards the table.
Fang Pingying noticed her softening and smiled at her, giving her a nudge toward the table, "Mom, come sit and eat with second aunt. Eat up before the food gets cold."
"This..." Qiu Xiu, noticing Zhou Yunmei's still unhappy expression, felt a bit awkward.
Seeing this, Luo Dashan pushed Zhou Yunmei a bit to encourage her to attend to Qiu Xiu.
Zhou Yunmei was reluctant, but Luo Zhiming and Fang Xiu both pulled her aside and whispered persuasions for a while until finally they managed to convince Zhou Yunmei.
Although Zhou Yunmei was still upset, she relaxed her face as much as she could and called out to Qiu Xiu, "Xiu, let's eat, look at this whole table of dishes, not meant to just sit and be looked at."
Afterwards, she spoke to Qiu Xiu about the money, "Xiu, it's not that I don't want to give money, it's just that my family hasn't saved up any in the second half of this year, there's no cash at hand. Otherwise, I wouldn't have said it's because of Cui Lan, even if it hadn't been, between our two families, being our own people, I'd still be willing to contribute."
Qiu Xiu knew Zhou Yunmei's character; even if she had the money, she wouldn't give it.
But the fact she said this meant she still cared about the bond between relatives. She nodded and patted Zhou Yunmei's hand, "Sister-in-law, don't worry about the money, we'll manage on our own."
Hearing this, Zhou Yunmei immediately agreed, and now felt more inclined to chat with Qiu Xiu.
The two chatted as they ate, touching upon Cuilan's marriage.
Qiu Xiu actually cared enough to ask, "Big sis, what about Cuilan's marriage? Now that Zhiyong is taking care of his second uncle in the hospital, won't it delay Cuilan's wedding?"
Yun Mei said, "It's fine, I talked it over with her dad today, and we'll discuss this matter first thing tomorrow morning."
"How did you discuss it?"
Yun Mei's voice grew angry when she mentioned Cuilan's issue, "The wedding banquet is set for the sixth day of the first lunar month. If the Zhang family disagrees, then so be it. The wedding is off, and once the New Year festivities are over, our Luo family will gather folks to confront the Zhangs. We'll tally up how miserable they've made my daughter Cuilan during her time with them and demand compensation for her suffering."
"Mom, what are you talking about? Why would it be off?" Cuilan was extremely reluctant for things to reach that point, but given the circumstances, she dared not say more.
Seeing Cuilan still speaking up, Yun Mei gave her a fierce glare, "It's almost certainly off."
Cuilan pouted, wanting to speak.
Qiu Xiu immediately interjected, saying to Yun Mei, "Big sis, you consider what to do about this. If you need help from our side, just give us a holler."
Yun Mei responded with a grateful smile.
After dinner, Qiu Xiu lingered for a while with Yu'er due to the cold weather before heading home.
Pingying had not slept well the previous night and had been out and about all day, feeling rather tired herself, so she got ready for bed.
As she was preparing her bedding, she suddenly heard a commotion outside; it sounded like a dispute between Dashan and Yun Mei.
Pingying dropped what she was doing and immediately went out to the courtyard.
Upon opening the door, she saw Dashan slap Yun Mei across the face.
Hong Lan and the others were standing in the yard, clearly drawn out by the heated argument.
Pingying was shocked by Dashan's action; since she had been with the family, even including her past life, she had never seen Dashan lay a hand on Yun Mei. At most, he would shout, and Yun Mei would work herself up as if she was the only one bearing the world's unfairness.
Once she regained her composure, Pingying quickly approached, "Dad, what's happening? Why all this sudden fuss?"
Dashan, red-eyed and veins popping on his forehead with anger, pointed at Yun Mei, "Tell her to get lost. Tomorrow, I'll go with her to the township government to divorce. I can't live this life anymore."
"What happened?" Seeing she wouldn't get an answer from Dashan, Pingying turned to ask Hong Lan, who was standing by their side.
Hong Lan whispered about the incident that just transpired, "It's about the money for second uncle's medical bills..."
Earlier, when Qiu Xiu and the others came for dinner, Yun Mei didn't dare make more trouble because of Dashan's threats.
Also, she hadn't clarified how much money was actually spent on Dahu's treatment. She thought it was just a matter of a hundred or two hundred yuan, figuring that even if she covered half, it'd be only tens of dollars at most.
According to what Dashan initially said, they would pay it off slowly; a few dollars a month seemed manageable to her.
Plus, she knew Dashan held fraternal loyalty in high regard. Like he said, he could compromise on anything else, but if Yun Mei dared to play tricks on this matter, he would not stand for it.
Hence, not wanting to provoke the rarely angered Dashan, Yun Mei resolved to let the matter go and paid up. (To be continued.
