Reborn as a Tough Army Wife

Chapter 168: The Beginning of Conflict

"Opening tomorrow? That's so soon?" Luo Zhiyong was somewhat surprised, thinking that setting up a shop would take at least ten days to half a month.

Fang Pingying nodded. "Yeah, actually it's just renting a shop to sell things, which is pretty much the same as what we did in town before. It's just more convenient to have a shop, so there's no need to fuss over a grand opening. We didn't do much to the interior; Uncle Zeng just set up a few shelves to display the goods."

"I'm thinking that we have a limited variety of products now. Even with Hong Lan and me, plus adding Xiu'er, the three of us can't make much in one day. We might as well keep it like it was at home, open in the morning, sell a set amount each day. If business picks up later on, and we really want to expand, we can then give the shop a proper makeover."

"That's fine, it won't be too exhausting like before." Luo Zhiyong felt this was better, as it would not wear out Fang Pingying too much.

"Let's just go with it for now and see how well the pastries sell in the city. We can make new plans next year."

Luo Zhiyong nodded in agreement, then remembered Luo Zhiming and his wife, and asked, "By the way, haven't those two been causing you any trouble these past couple of days in the city?"

"No, didn't I just say? Zhiming came home with me to go to work." Speaking of the bus ride, Fang Pingying remembered Bai Jing and turned to Luo Zhiyong, "Oh, right, I ran into Bai Jing on the bus."

Luo Zhiyong's expression didn't change much; he just responded faintly, "No wonder, I just saw you two come back together."

"What do you think of Bai Jing?" Fang Pingying couldn't deny the trace of probing in her question, due to the incidents with Xu He in her past life making her overly cautious.

But Luo Zhiyong didn't seem to care at all. He thought briefly and answered casually, "She's okay, I guess. I don't interact with her much usually, just occasionally having a meal together with both of them. She seems alright, quite easy to get along with."

Fang Pingying gave Luo Zhiyong a look, thinking that men could never really tell who was truly easy to get along with and who was just pretending. She guessed that no woman in the whole compound would find Bai Jing easy to get along with, but he just couldn't see it.

But it's also possible that Bai Jing was different towards him, and men usually wouldn't discuss these matters privately, leading to his misunderstanding.

However, seeing Luo Zhiyong's lack of reaction when she brought up Bai Jing, with an expression as casual as if they were talking about a stranger, Fang Pingying didn't pursue further.

She surmised that, like Xu He, Bai Jing was likely attracted to this man's kindness, and Luo Zhiyong didn't give it much thought.

But what Fang Pingying couldn't figure out was that in her memory of her past life, Bai Jing never surfaced.

It could also be because her temperament was so bad in her past life that after joining the military compound, she barely interacted with the neighbors and didn't greet people she bumped into in the hallway; she couldn't even distinguish who was who.

Maybe Bai Jing had been around in the past life too, perhaps even interested in Luo Zhiming, but Luo Zhiming didn't care because he didn't like her.

In her previous life, she and Luo Zhiming had never truly loved each other. Even if there had been anything, he wouldn't have discussed such matters with her.

However, now that she's aware of it in this life, she would learn to be cautious.

After pondering for a while and seeing that it was already dark outside the window, Fang Pingying stretched out her hand to take Luo Zhiyong's watch and looked at it. It was already past seven in the evening. Immediately she got up, "It's time to make dinner, get up quickly."

Luo Zhiyong, feeling sorry for her continuous hard work these days and not getting any rest upon returning, hugged her and said softly, "How about you take a break, and I'll get up and cook."

"I'm not tired," Fang Pingying said, enduring the soreness in her body as she was about to get up.

But this made Luo Zhiyong unhappy; he rolled over and pinned her down, raising an eyebrow at her, "Really not tired?"

"Stop messing around, get up quickly." Fang Pingying chided him with a glance, then pointed to the pastry that had been left on the table, "I brought some fresh pastries that we've made at the shop in the past few days for you to try. Let me know how they taste."

"Okay." Luo Zhiyong rolled out of bed and after getting dressed, he suddenly remembered something about Luo Chun coming to ask about yarn a while ago, and mentioned to Fang Pingying, "Oh, right, Luo Chun came over the other day inquiring about the yarn, said you helped her buy some..." "Yes, I almost forgot about that. Yesterday when I was out, she asked me to buy some yarn for her son. I haven't been back in the past few days, so she must have been anxious." Fang Pingying reached for her bag, rummaged around, and pulled out the yarn, "I'll go give her the things I've brought."

Fang Pingying got dressed and went next door with the yarn she bought for Luo Chun to knock on the door.

Luo Chun's family was having a meal at home at the time, but only the mother and son were there; Zhang Wei was not.

As soon as she saw Fang Pingying, Luo Chun greeted her with a faint smile, "Sister-in-law, you're back."

"Yes, I've been busy with some things in the city these past few days and haven't been back." For some reason, Fang Pingying felt that Luo Chun's smile today was too faint, but she didn't think much of it. She handed over the yarn, "Look, here's the yarn I bought for you, I haven't had the chance to deliver it until now."

"Oh, sister-in-law, you bought it for me. I saw that you haven't been back these past two days, and I was also waiting to knit a sweater for my child, so I asked someone else to buy it yesterday." As Luo Chun spoke, she took out the yarn someone else bought for her and added, "Look, I bought almost three jin, I reckon even two jin might not be enough."

Fang Pingying's expression darkened slightly as she looked at the yarn in Luo Chun's hands and asked, "So, you don't want this yarn?"

"Yes, you see I already bought some, and my family can't use that much. Why don't you keep it for yourself?" It was clearly a situation that should have made Luo Chun feel guilty, but she did not feel she owed Fang Pingying any apologies.

It was as if Fang Pingying was not doing her a favor, but rather selling yarn, and Luo Chun felt that as long as she hadn't paid, she was entitled to change her mind at any time.

To be honest, Luo Chun's way of handling things would definitely make people uncomfortable. Not only does one's good intentions go unrewarded, but they also have to suffer a financial loss because of her.

What if one couldn't afford that loss? Then, a confrontation would definitely erupt between them today.

However, for Fang Pingying, a couple of jin of yarn, just over a buck, wasn't worth the bother, she wasn't lacking that bit of money.

As a result, Fang Pingying frowned slightly but didn't say much and took the yarn back home.

Standing at the door, Luo Chun saw Fang Pingying's dislike but didn't feel the slightest bit sorry. On the contrary, she even smiled gleefully.

Today, with Zhang Wei not at home, she could do whatever she wanted, unlike usual when she had to be cautious about what she said and did for fear of Zhang Wei's reprimand.

Back at home, Luo Zhiyong was cooking in the kitchen. Hearing the door open, he asked cheerfully from the kitchen, "Did you deliver the stuff?"

"No, she said she got someone else to buy it, she doesn't want these." Fang Pingying said, feeling somewhat angry.

Luo Zhiyong noticed something was off in her voice and came out, "What? What happened, didn't you two clearly agree on this?"

"We did, it was very clear." Fang Pingying didn't want to dwell on such matters and casually held up the yarn against Luo Zhiyong for sizing, "Forget it, if she doesn't want it, we'll just use it ourselves. This blue yarn, I'll knit a vest for you when I have time, and I'll weave a sweater for myself with the yellow."

"Alright, yarn won't go to waste anyway, it's the same if we keep it for our own use." And with that, Luo Zhiyong added another piece of advice, "In the future, when helping people buy things, it's better to ask clearly. Only buy it when you're sure they really need it, so as not to create any conflicts, especially with neighbors."

Fang Pingying nodded, looking at the yarn in her hands with a self-deprecating smile. Sometimes, being a good person just doesn't pay off. (To be continued.
