Chapter 37: I'm a Martial Arts Genius, I've Laid My Cards on the Table
"Little Shu... that couldn't all be true, right?"
Xu Lizhi looked worried, her heart always wrapped up in the business and the family, and she never thought anything like this could happen. But the more she thought about it, the more she felt the girl's argument made sense. Every government policy in Xia Country seemed as if they were on the eve of some great change.
She looked at Jiang Shu, unable to help but ask.
Judging from her son's growing appetite, she had guessed her son's Martial Arts talent was quite good.
Getting into a regular bachelor's degree program shouldn't have been a problem.
But now, she just hoped Jiang Shu would be safe and sound—even an associate degree right here in Ji City would be good, since it'd be close to home.
"Mom, it's nothing. If there really was a monster invasion, Xia Country would probably start drafting people on a massive scale."
On the bus, Jiang Shu smiled as he reassured his mom.
Martial Arts was by no means some shortcut you could pick up in an instant.
If things were that urgent, Xia Country would surely adopt gene modifications like Freedom Country did.
They could broadcast movies like this, and gradually reform the college entrance exams—that itself showed everything was still under control.
It was still early.
Jiang Shu accompanied Xu Lizhi to the market to buy some groceries, and when they got home, Jiang Yongyi and Jiang Yanyue arrived at the same time.
"We got tricked by the movie marketing again, they said he'd appear for several minutes, but it was barely over a minute! Mom, wasn't today's movie good?"
"I can never understand those things, ask your brother. Old Jiang, you take a break today, I'll cook." As she spoke, Xu Lizhi carried the groceries into the kitchen.
"Rare, unusual, and surprisingly high quality."
Giving Yanyue a thumbs-up, Jiang Shu also went into the kitchen, rinsed rice and washed vegetables, helping his mom out.
In no time at all, he brought four dishes and a soup to the table.
The aroma of food lingered around the dining table. The four sat together, but unlike usual, Jiang Shu didn't start serving rice first. Instead, he sat down on a chair and said seriously, "Mom, Dad, I have something to say."
"Your son's Qi Blood Transport is circulating through his whole body now, so I can get into an academy without taking the exam."
"Shengjing Academy, East Sea Academy, Jiangnan Academy, Tianshu Academy."
"Dad, Mom, you pick one."
After saying that, Jiang Shu went to get himself a big bowl of rice. When he came back, the table was dead silent.
Jiang Yongyi, Xu Lizhi, and Jiang Yanyue all stared wide-eyed.
If Jiang Shu hadn't said it himself, they never would have believed it.
"Jiang... Jiang Shu, are you joking?"
"Yeah, study hard in high school and you could be my junior one day."
Seeing Jiang Shu nod so solemnly, Jiang Yanyue felt her whole body go numb. More than two months ago, she'd suspected her brother might have already mastered Qi Blood Transport, and that maybe he'd go wild on the college entrance exam and get into a top-tier school.
But the academies...
She had never even considered it.
*Even for a genius like her, she couldn't guarantee she'd get into an academy through the entrance exam.*
Jiang Shu had only trained for six months.
Going right from being bachelor's material to top-tier?
*Practicing martial arts really could change your fate.*
*Could he actually be a genius?*
"Little Shu... which of the four academies do you think suits you best?" Jiang Yongyi, the most experienced of them, took a deep breath, and quickly composed himself.
Choosing a college.
It was absolutely the biggest event in a child's life in an ordinary family.
The university and major you chose could even determine your future work and life.
"Each one has its own advantages."
Jiang Shu broke down his analysis of the Four Great Universities, eating as he gave his parents time to think it over.
"Little Shu, how about... you just pick between Shengjing Academy and Jiangnan Academy."
After a while, Jiang Yongyi bit the bullet and spoke.
Even for a matter this big, he didn't dare make the call. His kid had come this far; maybe his world was already bigger than his own.
As a dad, all he could do was support him.
Shengjing Academy was the best school in Xia Country, hands down. It was top tier—if Jiang Shu got in, anyone who heard would give him a big thumbs-up.
As for Jiangnan Academy, that was his own private wish. Yanyan had good grades; if she did exceptionally well on the entrance exam, maybe she could get into an academy too.
Girls and boys were different, after all. If the college was nearby, parents could feel more at ease.
If Jiang Shu was at Jiangnan Academy, maybe he could look after Yanyan too.
"Let's tentatively go with Jiangnan Academy, then. I'll check what conditions the Four Great Universities offer when the time comes. You guys eat first—the food's going to get cold."
"Little Shu..."
"Yeah."
"Should we tell your grandparents and uncles that you got into an academy without the exam, or should we wait till the results are out..."
"Dad, Martial Arts isn't like academic grades. For the regular college entrance exam, you can mess up from nerves. In Martial Arts, that doesn't happen—unless the government suddenly changes policies at the last minute. As for telling the family, you arrange it as you see fit. I've got time the next few days anyway."
Jiang Shu replied in one go. He knew that what his dad meant by "telling them" wasn't just making a quick phone call.
Their family's tradition was that, whenever there was a big event, everyone would get together for a meal.
Like when his sister got early admission to Ji City's top high school, they'd booked a banquet at a restaurant to celebrate.
"Hey, big brother, you have any free time these days? Nothing much, just that Little Shu's about to take the college entrance exams—got a good shot now, so we want to gather the family to celebrate. Can you bring your wife and kids too? I'll go see Mom and Dad myself tomorrow and tell them. Great, so you're free either of the next two nights, awesome, awesome, I'll hang up now."
"Ali..."
Jiang Yongyi was the second oldest son, and after calling his two brothers, he set the date for the night after next.
"Huh, where's Little Shu?"
He hung up, set his phone aside, and couldn't help but ask.
"No idea, he left when you started the call." Jiang Yanyue wanted to bury her head in her bowl and replied, her voice muffled.
*It's over—it's all over.*
*That bastard Jiang Shu, how did he suddenly master full-body Qi Blood Transport and get into an academy without the exam?*
*Not only could she never joke around with him again, she couldn't use him as a chauffeur or bodyguard anymore.*
*She'd probably end up as his secretary, just handling all sorts of calls for him.*
*Damn it... was that even fair?*
*Jiang Yanyue felt awful, and at that moment, Jiang Shu came back with a box of liquor. He opened it and poured some straight into Jiang Yongyi's bowl, saying, "Dad, you look so happy, so I went out and bought some booze. Our little family can celebrate a bit ahead of time."*
"Dad, you really don't need to drive for Didi anymore. It's all algorithms now and way too competitive. No matter how much you drive, they'll keep your numbers limited. Might as well take a good rest and take care of your health."
"Mom, same goes for you. Rent's gone up, running a shop is so hard. Why not just stay home too? Honestly, you two don't need to worry about money from now on."
"Trust your son—Martial Artists can earn way more than you can imagine."
