Quirks in Wizarding World

Chapter 18: Ch.17: The House of Knowledge

________________________________________________________________________________

- Ravenclaw Common Room, Hogwarts Castle -

- September 1, 1991 -

Stepping through the arched entrance, Arthav and the other first-years found themselves in a breathtaking space unlike anything they had seen before. The Ravenclaw Common Room was a circular chamber with soaring ceilings, its walls lined with tall arched windows that overlooked the vast Hogwarts grounds. Moonlight filtered in, casting a silvery glow over the room, making the polished wood and blue-draped furniture gleam softly.

The most striking feature was the massive domed ceiling, enchanted to resemble the night sky. Stars shimmered faintly above, their glow ever-changing as if mirroring the real heavens outside. Bookshelves, filled with countless tomes, lined the walls, and the warm flicker of floating candles illuminated cozy seating areas arranged around small tables.

At the center of the room stood an elegant statue of Rowena Ravenclaw, her stone features carved with sharp intelligence. She wore long flowing robes, and her head was adorned with a delicate circlet, hinting at the legendary lost diadem. In her hand, she held an open book, her gaze seemingly piercing through time itself. The words inscribed at the base read:

"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure."

The air itself carried a quiet hum of magic, subtle yet ever-present.

Penelope Clearwater turned to face them, her Prefect badge catching the candlelight. "Welcome to Ravenclaw," she said, her voice filled with quiet pride. "This will be your home for the next seven years. You'll find that our house values curiosity, intellect, and creativity above all else. That means questioning everything, seeking knowledge wherever you can find it, and always thinking before you act."

She gestured to the right staircase leading up from the common room. "Boys' dormitories are up this way," she said before pointing to the left staircase. "And girls' dormitories are that way. Unlike other houses, we don't share dorm rooms. Each of you will have your own space, tailored to suit your needs."

A few of the students murmured in appreciation at the mention of private rooms.

"Additionally, as Ravenclaws, you have access to the common room's personal library. Many of these books can't be found in the main Hogwarts Library, so feel free to explore. However," she warned, "some are advanced. Read carefully, and if you don't understand something, ask an older student or a professor."

Arthav took in everything as Penelope spoke, appreciating the logical layout of the house. The windows, the books, the solitude of private rooms—it all felt right.

Once Penelope had covered the essentials, she glanced toward the entrance. "Now, wait here. Professor Flitwick will be arriving shortly to welcome you all."

A few minutes later, light footsteps echoed from the entrance. The first-years turned as Professor Filius Flitwick, Head of Ravenclaw House, entered the room. Though small in stature, he carried himself with an energy that commanded instant respect. His eyes sparkled with warmth and intelligence as he approached, hands clasped before him.

"Ah, our new Ravenclaws!" he greeted, his voice high yet filled with enthusiasm. "Welcome, welcome! I do hope you're all settling in well."

The students straightened, eager to hear what their Head of House had to say.

"You have been sorted into the House of Knowledge, where wit, wisdom, and curiosity are celebrated," he continued. "Here, we encourage you to ask questions, to explore beyond what is taught in class, and to always seek the truth. Magic is a vast and wonderful subject, and your journey to mastering it begins now."

His gaze moved across the room, studying each of them in turn. "Remember this: intelligence is not measured by how much you know, but by how well you use what you learn. So, challenge yourselves, support each other, and never be afraid to think differently."

A few students exchanged glances, already inspired by his words.

Flitwick then reached into his robes and pulled out a stack of parchment. "Now, before you retire, here are your class schedules for tomorrow. You'll find that our first day covers some of the core subjects—Charms, Herbology, and Potions." He handed each student their schedule with a kind smile.

Arthav glanced at his parchment, noting the structured timetable. His first lesson tomorrow would be Charms—taught by Flitwick himself.

"Now then," the professor clapped his hands together, "if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask me or one of the Prefects. For now, get some rest—tomorrow, your real Hogwarts journey begins."

With that, Flitwick gave a final nod before heading toward his office. The first-years, still processing everything, soon made their way toward their dormitories.

As Arthav climbed the staircase to his room, he couldn't help but feel that, in many ways, he had come to the right place.

----------

Arthav climbed the spiral staircase leading to the boys' dormitories, his steps light but measured. At the top, he found a corridor lined with wooden doors, each marked with a nameplate. He traced his fingers along the engraved letters of his own name—Arthav Nair—before pushing the door open.

The room inside was small but well-designed, its medieval castle features immediately standing out. Stone walls, slightly uneven from age, framed the space, and a high-arched window let in the moonlight, illuminating the dark wooden floor. A four-poster bed with deep blue curtains sat against one side, its covers embroidered with the Ravenclaw emblem. A sturdy wooden desk with a high-backed chair stood near the window, while a cupboard and a small bookshelf lined the other wall. A flickering enchanted lantern on the desk bathed the room in a soft, golden glow.

At the foot of his bed sat his trunk, neatly placed, along with the rest of his luggage. Hogwarts must have sent them up while they were in the common room.

Arthav exhaled, letting the day's events settle in his mind. Everything had gone smoothly so far—his sorting, his interactions, even his place in Ravenclaw. Now, though, in the privacy of his own space, he could finally take a moment to make this room his own.

He drew his wand, feeling its familiar weight in his grip. His Transfiguration knowledge wasn't extensive yet, but it was more than enough for simple modifications.

With a flick of his wrist, the heavy blue curtains lightened, shifting into a darker midnight blue with faint golden constellations woven into the fabric. The bedsheets followed, changing from standard school linen to a sleek, deep blue set with silver embroidery. The wooden desk smoothed slightly, taking on a polished black oak finish, and the chair's design shifted to something more ergonomic, with softer cushioning. Even the enchanted lantern flickered, adjusting to a cooler, whiter glow rather than the warm candlelight hue.

It wasn't a drastic change, but it was enough to feel personal—something that reflected his own taste rather than just Hogwarts tradition.

Satisfied, he set his wand down on the desk and moved to the cupboard, retrieving his nightwear. A quick change later, he sat on the edge of his bed, rubbing his temples. Today had been a whirlwind, yet tomorrow would be even more demanding.

His first class would be Charms, taught by none other than Professor Flitwick, and it would be shared with Slytherin. That meant dealing with students who might not be thrilled about having a half-blood, non-British classmate in their midst.

Arthav knew he wasn't someone to shy away from challenges, but it was always best to be prepared.

Pushing the thoughts aside, he lay back on his bed, staring up at the faint shimmer of stars on his new curtains. Tomorrow would come soon enough.
