Chapter 21 - The Imperial Concubine is having an affair with the Prime Minister
Rong Fu was found in the well of the cold palace, his neck already twisted and lifeless.
“The Imperial Physicians from the Imperial Hospital examined the corpse and discovered a large amount of poisonous powder on the clothes of the body. Upon investigation, this is… the poison that the Empress had used.”
The Empress! The Empress! It was the Empress again! How could she be so vicious? So intolerant of others?!
Thinking of the Empress’ past actions, the Emperor believed it eighty percent, but there was still some doubt in his heart.
Was it really the Empress? Such an obvious method, such a clear implication of the Empress, was it really done by the Empress? Or was someone trying to frame the Empress?
The Emperor frowned and didn’t hastily convict the Empress. Instead, he had the Empress brought to the Qianqing Palace for him to question face to face.
In the past, only the Empress had the Second Prince in the palace. The palace servants knew that with the Second Prince around, the Empress’ position was naturally stable. It wasn’t until Consort Hui gave birth to the Third Prince, who was healthy and obedient and even more favored by His Majesty, that those palace servants turned to devote themselves to Consort Hui.
They had once sided with Consort Hui because of the Third Prince. Now, naturally, they would side with the Empress because of the Third Prince’s death, leaving only the Second Prince in the palace.
The evidence the Emperor found was already tipped off early by someone to inform the Empress.
The Empress had a general idea when she arrived at the Qianqing Palace. Facing the Emperor’s cold gaze, he questioned harshly, “Empress, tell me, how much did you do in the plot to murder the Third Prince?!”
“Your Majesty! This concubine is wronged!” The Empress knelt down and wailed,
“Someone must have framed this concubine! If this concubine really wanted to harm someone, how could I use such an easily traceable poison? And if this concubine really used this poison to harm someone, how could I not properly dispose of the evidence and just leave it out in the open?”
The Empress spoke with tears streaming down her face, and what she said was exactly what the Emperor suspected.
Could it be that someone wanted to kill two birds with one stone? First, kill the Third Prince to severely wound Consort Hui, and then frame the Empress, heavily injuring the Empress and pulling her down from the Empress’ throne.
The more he thought about it, the more he felt it was exactly the case.
Just as the Emperor was deep in thought, Li De reported, “Your Majesty, Consort Hui requests an audience.”
Consort Hui?
The Emperor was stunned and hurriedly let her in.
In just one day, her usually enchanting and beautiful face had turned as pale as snow, the undisguisable haggardness breaking one’s heart.
The Emperor said softly, “Beloved Consort, why have you come? Why not rest well in the palace?”
“Your Majesty,” Jiang Xin Ren knelt down with the support of the palace maids, “Please forgive this concubine for being anxious to avenge our prince and using private punishment.”
“I don’t blame you.” The Emperor naturally understood the pain of losing a child.
“This concubine has brought a person. Why don’t Your Majesty listen to what that person has to say,” she turned to look at the Empress, her eyes filled with undisguised hatred, “and then determine the Empress’ crime!”
The Empress met her gaze and only felt very uneasy. When she saw who the person being forcibly brought in and barely alive was, her eyelids twitched, and she angrily said, “Consort Hui, you! You actually dared to break into the Kunning Palace!”
“For our prince! What does this concubine not dare to do!”
Jiang Xin Ren glared at Qin Mei, who was being pushed in, with reddened eyes, “Repeat what you said to me earlier, honestly!”
Qin Mei was trembling all over. She hadn’t been subjected to torture, but…
As soon as the Empress was summoned to the Qianqing Palace and left, Consort Hui barged into the Kunning Palace, controlling the palace maids and preventing them from tipping off the Empress.
Then, Consort Hui approached her.
“Qin Mei, do you recognize this?”
Two severed fingers were thrown in front of her. She took a closer look and saw a black spot at the knuckle of the little finger. This, this was her younger brother’s finger!
Qin Mei’s parents had a total of four daughters and one son. Under her parents’ upbringing, the four sisters were extremely protective of their younger brother. Even if he was unlearned and loved to gamble and frequent brothels, they were always obedient to him.
And now, her brother’s fingers had been chopped off and thrown in front of her!
“You! What have you done to my brother?!”
Consort Hui sneered, “How he is depends entirely on your performance. If you obey, I will spare his life. If not, I will have his limbs chopped off and crushed to feed the dogs.”
That face was like a demon, every word vicious and cruel, “Let him watch himself being devoured by dogs.”
She would really do it! Qin Mei had no doubt.
She considered her own life cheap, but her brother couldn’t!
Qin Mei disregarded the Empress’ eyes that wished to devour her and said intermittently, “Her Highness wanted to murder the Third Prince. Rong Fu was… Her Highness’ man. He sprinkled poisonous powder on… the clothes. As long as the Third Prince inhaled it, it would ruin his foundation and lead to his premature death.”
Although spoken in a broken manner, everyone understood the meaning. The concubines who later rushed over upon hearing the news also took it in.
The Emperor was already furious. He strode over and slapped the Empress across the face, “This is what you call being wronged! Doing nothing!”
The Empress knew things had taken a terrible turn. She immediately knelt and hugged the Emperor’s leg, crying, “Your Majesty! Your Majesty! It was a moment of confusion for this concubine to wish harm upon the Third Prince! But as Qin Mei said, this concubine only wanted the Third Prince to inhale the poison, not for Rong Fu to strangle the prince and throw him into the water! Your Majesty, please discern the truth!”
“How long are you going to quibble!” Jiang Xin Ren looked at her with hatred, “Aren’t these all your tactics? If the palace maids could be sent away, you would directly strangle my prince. If it was later traced to you, you would say, as you are now, that the poisoning plan didn’t succeed;
if the palace maids couldn’t be sent away, even the inhaled poison could take his life. Empress, what more is there to explain about your treacherous scheme!”
She was so full of hatred that her body swayed. She pointed at the Empress and shouted angrily, “You were determined to kill my prince no matter what! Empress! How vicious is your heart!”
“No! No! I didn’t! I really only used the poison!”
The Empress was terrified. She had just told His Majesty that she was innocent and had done nothing. Now that her poisoning plot to harm the prince had been exposed, the Emperor would never believe her again.
Zhao Yue Li also added fuel to the fire, “Besides His Majesty, who else in this palace can order Rong Fu around? Empress! Could it be that you want to push everything onto His Majesty?!”
The Emperor had assigned Rong Fu, who had murdered the prince. He was filled with self-blame. At this moment, he turned all his guilt into murderous intent towards the Empress.
He loved the Third Prince dearly, yet the Empress had used his hand to kill his prince!
His vicious gaze fell on the Empress, his murderous intent undisguised.
Jiang Xin Ren wept, “I beg Your Majesty to execute the Empress! Avenge our prince!”
The Emperor opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say anything, he heard the Second Prince’s wailing from outside the hall, “No! Imperial Father! No!”
The Second Prince had been hiding outside. Hearing that they wanted to execute his mother, he immediately rushed in without regard and hugged the Empress, crying loudly, “Imperial Father! I beg you not to kill my mother! This son cannot lose his mother!”
“Zhao’er, the Empress is full of evil. Don’t make a scene anymore!”
The Second Prince didn’t care. He only knew he couldn’t lose his mother. He desperately cried and pleaded, “I beg you, Imperial Father, don’t!”
His body was already weak. Crying for so long, his lips turned purple. Amid the Empress’ exclamation, he actually rolled his eyes and fainted.
The Emperor was startled, his heart tightening. This was his only prince now! He absolutely couldn’t let anything happen to him!
He immediately summoned the Imperial Physicians to treat the Second Prince.
Jiang Xin Ren knelt on the ground and grabbed the Emperor’s sleeve, pleading in a pitiful tone, “Your Majesty! Your Majesty! Won’t you avenge Xu’er?”
The Emperor was in a dilemma, “Beloved Consort, you also saw that the Second Prince can’t be without the Empress. I will depose the Empress…”
“Just depose her? Shouldn’t she be executed? She killed our prince!”
Jiang Xin Ren couldn’t believe it, “Is the Second Prince’s life the only life that matters? My Xu’er’s life doesn’t count?! Your Majesty!”
“Beloved Consort,” the Emperor was also in pain. He squatted down to comfort her, “We are still young. We will have more children.”
Jiang Xin Ren looked at him in grief, her face twisted in pain, “So I have to watch the murderer who killed my son continue to live?!”
“I can’t do it! Your Majesty! You might as well kill me! Kill me, Your Majesty!–“
Zhao Yue Li watched from afar. Consort Hui’s painful cries transcended time, back to her previous life, back to when she was framed by Consort De.
She knelt in the great hall, watching Consort De sigh with relief after succeeding, watching the Empress hold the Second Prince and smile hypocritically, and finally looking at the Emperor high above.
“Your Majesty,” she heard her own voice, “do you also think it was this concubine who did it?”
The Emperor’s gaze flickered, avoiding her. They had once been so close that she understood everything from his slightest movement.
And this, in turn, was even more painful.
“You know! You know I’m innocent! For the sake of the Second Prince, this is how you treat this concubine?!”
–“Execute me! I beg you to execute me!”
–“You might as well kill me! Kill me!”
In the end, Consort Hui fainted in the Qianqing Palace and was sent back to the Jian Jia Palace. The Empress was deposed and demoted to a commoner.
Zhao Yue Li forced herself to return to the palace and collapsed on the bed as if drained of energy.
Mao Xun, Mao Xun, Mao Xun!
How could you be so heartless and unrighteous! How could you not see our blood and tears!
She lay there in a daze for a long time until it was dark and everything was pitch black. It wasn’t until Huai Ying quietly walked to her side,
“Your Highness, someone wants to see you.”
