Chapter 11 - The Imperial Concubine is having an affair with the Prime Minister
A few days after the incident, Jiang Xin Ren received the allegiance of Zhuang He Ming’s subordinates.
Although she had mentally prepared herself for the extent of his influence, she couldn’t help but be surprised to learn that even Rong Shun, one of the two chief eunuchs by the Emperor’s side, was actually his planted spy.
“His hands have reached all the way to the Emperor’s side. Is he really not thinking of rebelling?”
She wanted to talk to Zhuang He Ming face to face, but he was probably avoiding her.
His influence was far greater than hers. If he truly didn’t want to see her, she feared that no matter what methods she used, it would be futile.
Since she couldn’t find him, she could only make him come to her.
Jiang Xin Ren took out a small piece of paper, wrote a few lines, casually folded it, and handed it to one of the men Zhuang He Ming had assigned to her.
“Go and give this to the Prime Minister. Before he opens the letter, remember to tell him that I haven’t been feeling well recently.”
The man was puzzled, but when the master handed them over to Mistress Jiang, he had told them to listen to Mistress Jiang’s words. So he honestly placed the letter in his bosom and went to wait for the Prime Minister in front of the Imperial Study.
The Imperial Study was an important place where the Emperor worked. Only those close to the Son of Heaven were allowed to enter.
Zhuang He Ming came at the Emperor’s summons. Just as he was about to step into the Imperial Study, he heard the call of a blackbird, which was the secret signal used specifically for communication in the Prime Minister’s residence.
He glanced in the direction of the blackbird’s call and said to Rong Shun, “Allow me to delay for a moment.”
Rong Shun rolled his eyes, understanding that Mistress Jiang wanted to see the master. Under the watchful eyes of others, he steadied his expression. “Prime Minister Zhuang is too serious. Just go and come back quickly.”
Zhuang He Ming went to a secluded spot, and the messenger emerged from the corner, presenting the letter. “Master, this is the letter Mistress Jiang asked this subordinate to bring to you.”
It was a thin piece of paper, and he was rarely puzzled. He was about to open it when he heard the man add, “Today, Mistress Jiang is not feeling well.”
Not feeling well? Injured? Tired?
He unfolded the letter, and there was only a short line of words on it, but it made his face change drastically. Even the hand holding the letter began to tremble. He hurriedly asked, “Your Mistress Jiang, she…”
There was the sound of a pebble falling behind him, reminding him that he could not delay any longer.
“Tell her I will go to her tonight, to her palace.”
The letter was crumpled into a ball and stuffed into his sleeve. He steadied his mind and returned to the Imperial Study.
A group of officials was arguing fiercely over the matter of taxation. No matter how much the people beside him banged the table and glared, Zhuang He Ming kept his head lowered and remained silent.
Although Prime Minister Zhuang usually didn’t talk much, he had never been silent to this extent, right?
The official who proposed the tax increase: Is Prime Minister Zhuang opposed to the tax increase? Should they try to argue more reasonably?
The official who opposed the tax increase: Does the Prime Minister agree with the tax increase? Have they displeased the Prime Minister?
Zhuang He Ming: … She is not feeling well, and on top of what was written on the paper, could it be?
If it were true, then there was no way to keep it hidden. Should he start preparing?
When he realized that everything around him was quiet, he looked up and saw those officials looking at him with hesitation, not daring to breathe heavily.
Zhuang He Ming: …
An official mustered up the courage to ask, “What does Prime Minister Zhuang think?”
“I don’t think anything.” His face was expressionless.
“But increasing taxes can…”The official tried to struggle.
Oh, they were talking about the tax increase.
He stood up and bowed to the Emperor. “This humble official believes that the measure to increase tax revenue is not feasible.”
The Emperor was not very interested in these political affairs to begin with. Watching these old men argue back and forth only made him feel extremely bored. Now that Zhuang He Ming had taken a stand, the matter was considered settled.
The Emperor smiled and said, “Everything will be as the Prime Minister says.”
“Prime Minister Zhuang! This tax revenue…”
The official who proposed the tax increase was very unwilling. The matter he had prepared for a long time was vetoed by a single sentence from the Prime Minister. He was about to say a few more words when he saw the sharp gaze of the Prime Minister.
“Do you have any other brilliant ideas?”
“…No, no.”
“Then this humble official will take his leave first.”
Receiving the Emperor’s nod, he turned around and left with a sweep of his robe, leaving the officials in the Imperial Study looking at each other in puzzlement. “Was Prime Minister Zhuang like this before?”
Wasn’t he said to have an immortal-like bearing, carefree and indifferent, cold and detached?
“Have you considered Prime Minister Zhuang’s background? He understands the harm that tax increases bring to the people the most. Perhaps today’s matter has angered Prime Minister Zhuang.”
“You have a point.”
———-
After handing the letter to the palace maid, Jiang Xin Ren took Qiu Ye and left the palace.
In the plot, the female lead Zhao Yue Li would encounter a minor trouble today. Bai Liang Yuan was an old servant who had been by the Emperor’s side since he was a prince. She was well aware of the special place Zhao Yue Li held in the Emperor’s heart and was extremely jealous and resentful.
Although she didn’t know why Zhao Yue Li had not been favored much since entering the palace and was still just a Precious Concubine, this did not stop her from using her status to bully Zhao Yue Li.
So today, when the two met in the Imperial Garden, Bai Liang Yuan made a fuss for no reason and punished Zhao Yue Li to kneel in the cold wind for an hour.
In the original plot, Zhao Yue Li endured it and even took fierce revenge on Bai Liang Yuan later. But now…
“Oh? It’s quite lively here. You don’t mind if I take a look too, right?”
Jiang Xin Ren appeared silently behind the two. Bai Liang Yuan showed a frightened expression and hurriedly half-bowed to pay her respects. “Greetings to Consort Jiang.”
Zhao Yue Li also bowed to pay her respects.
Jiang Xin Ren didn’t look at the disheveled female lead. Her scorching beautiful eyes were filled with malice as she stared at Bai Liang Yuan.
“I see that Bai Liang Yuan’s etiquette is not very good. Why don’t I teach you properly? Qiu Ye.”
“Yes, Your Highness.” Qiu Ye walked behind Bai Liang Yuan and kicked the back of her knees. Bai Liang Yuan fell to the ground with a thud, her knees aching.
“That’s more like it.” Jiang Xin Ren covered her mouth and chuckled delicately.
How could Bai Liang Yuan not know that Consort Jiang was deliberately making things difficult for her? She felt greatly humiliated and spoke without thinking.
“Consort Jiang is bullying the concubines like this. Does His Majesty know? Does the Empress know?”
“Oh?” Jiang Xin Ren sneered repeatedly. “Just based on your words, even if I smash your mouth, no one will say I’m wrong! Qiu Ye!”
Qiu Ye immediately raised her hand and slapped Bai Liang Yuan a few times without holding back. Bai Liang Yuan’s cheeks immediately swelled up.
You like to bully others by relying on your status? Today, I’ll let you see what it truly means to bully others by relying on status!
She glanced at Zhao Yue Li, who was still kneeling on the ground and casually said, “Get up. Don’t kneel anymore.”
Zhao Yue Li struggled to get up and thanked her. “Thank you, Your Highness. If Your Highness needs this concubine regarding this incident, this concubine will be at your service anytime.”
She said anytime, but the best time to report the incident was now, wasn’t it?
The two exchanged glances, and Jiang Xin Ren smiled. “Alright, then, you can come with me to see His Majesty.”
She ordered someone to drag Bai Liang Yuan along, and the two stepped into the Qianqing Palace together.
The Emperor, who had just returned from the Imperial Study, was startled by the commotion. Seeing his two beloved concubines, one with a face full of grievances (Zhao Yue Li) and the other showing anger (Jiang Xin Ren), and behind them was a woman in palace attire with swollen cheeks, wailing, “Your Majesty, uphold justice for this concubine!” He was momentarily at a loss and hurriedly asked,
“You all, what’s going on?”
Zhao Yue Li cried before speaking, calling out “Your Majesty” in a pitiful tone as crystal-like teardrops fell one by one. “Your Majesty, this concubine…”
The Emperor saw his usually dignified and virtuous childhood sweetheart crying like a pear blossom in the rain, looking so aggrieved. He immediately felt distressed and hurriedly embraced her to comfort her. “I’m here, I’m here.”
Zhao Yue Li cried even harder, burying herself in the Emperor’s embrace without speaking.
Jiang Xin Ren said from the side, “This concubine went to the Imperial Garden today to admire the flowers. Before taking a few steps, I saw Concubine Zhao kneeling in the cold wind, looking disheveled. Upon approaching, I saw that Bai Liang Yuan was punishing Concubine Zhao for no reason.
This concubine couldn’t bear it and reprimanded Bai Liang Yuan a few times. Who knew she dared to talk back to this concubine? This concubine was so angry that I punished her a few times.”
It sounded high-sounding and reasonable, but she had nearly smashed Bai Liang Yuan’s face!
The Emperor felt that she had gone too far. He frowned, wanting to reprimand her, but Zhao Yue Li raised her head from his embrace and cried,
“Your Majesty, this concubine waits in Ling Frost Palace every day for you. Today, I finally had the interest to go to the Imperial Garden, only to be humiliated by others. This concubine, in the future, how would I dare to step out of Ling Frost Palace?”
Thinking of Zhao Yue Li’s affection for him, he felt momentary guilt for not being able to give her a good position and allowing her to be bullied by others. The words of criticism were immediately cast aside.
“Yue Li, don’t be afraid. I won’t let you suffer any more grievances in the future.”
Then he coldly said to Li De, “Bai Liang Yuan’s character is not upright. Demote her to a noble lady and confine her for three months!”
Ignoring Bai Liang Yuan’s pale and disbelieving appearance, he said to Jiang Xin Ren, “A Fei (Beloved concubine), you have also worked hard today. Your health is not good, so go back and rest.”
He was eager to reminisce with his childhood sweetheart.
Jiang Xin Ren smiled slightly and obediently bowed. “This concubine will take her leave.”
