Chapter 331: Blackened Junior Sister (36)
Suddenly, a voice sounded from the side. It came from an elderly man.
The old man slowly strolled to the table occupied by both Yue Ran and Long Yuan, gazed at the chessboard, and stroked his long white beard.
For some reason, when the old man approached and spoke up, the surrounding sounds subconsciously lightened a little. Since Yue Ran and Long Yuan had devoted the majority of their time and focus to listening to the latest news around, they were able to naturally detect the abrupt changes in the environment very quickly.
"I wonder if you, this young lady, would like to learn from me," the old man said.
"Master, you are causing trouble again," another voice sounded, one that sounded considerably younger than the white-haired elderly man. "We still have something to do later, remember?"
A young man followed behind the old man. Although the young man was dressed simply—merely wearing a plain white robe with dark bamboo forest embroidered on it and a clear jade pendant tied to the belt on his waist—he looked extraordinary. He hurriedly chased after the old man to Yue Ran's side.
"Sorry, my master is old, but he is still not old at heart," the young man said mainly to Yue Ran. "He is a person who likes to play chess," he explained apologetically. "Has he disturbed you and your companion?"
"What are you talking about?" The old man said it with a mock protest. "I have finally found the time to come out to play chess, but am I not even allowed to do it now? Hmph!"
"No, he did not disturb us," Yue Ran replied. "Moreover, it has been a while since I last met an opponent that could contend with me."
As soon as he heard this, Long Yuan got up on his own initiative, walked to her side, poured tea for her, and gave up his seat to the old man.
"That is good, that is good," the old man remarked with a hearty laugh. "How long does it usually take for you to play a game of chess?"
"Alas, you old man," the young man exclaimed with a weary sigh.
Yue Ran did not say anything in response, but her eyes were bent into lovely crescents. She raised her body slightly and nodded to the old man as a gesture to begin the game of chess.
The two of them went back and forth, but it was evident that the old man took a lengthier time to think about his next move. Li Chang Feng, the young man, turned a little anxious, but he did not dare to bother his master. He could only stand behind the old man and fret about the circumstances he was stuck in because of his unreliable master.
Another move fell on the chessboard, and Yue Ran resumed her previous sitting position, with half of her body leaning against the back of the chair in comfort while leisurely taking a sip of her tea. The old man seated across from her looked at the chessboard, frowned and thought for a long time, and then touched his beard twice. In the end, it was Li Chang Feng who nudged his back to urge him to give up.
"Old man, if you lose, then you lose," Li Chang Feng said. "We still have things to do, so do not waste any more time here!"
"What do you know?" The old man retorted sternly. "This game does not count; this game does not count; I was too careless!" He anxiously brushed his beard twice anxiously. "It is all your fault for urging me all the time; if it were not for you, I might have already won!" He berated the young man before turning his attention back to Yue Ran. "Let us start over again!"
Li Chang Feng thought to himself: ...Why is everything my fault?
In fact, Li Chang Feng was also shocked. This old man may look insane, but in all the years that Li Chang Feng had recognized the old man as his master, he had never seen the old man lose in a chess game. Today was a first. So, had the old man actually come across someone who could make him lose?
"Just playing a regular game of chess is a little boring," Yue Ran said. "Why not add some bets when we play another game?"
Yue Ran sat up straight, and with a sweep of her slender hand, all the chess pieces on the board were instantly messed up.
"Oh?" The old man was a little startled by the suggestion but soon laughed heartily. "The young lady is really interesting! Then let us play another game! What kind of bet are you looking to place?"
"Gambling money is not interesting," Yue Ran said. "I only need your help in finding one thing."
"All right, accepted," the old man exclaimed with satisfaction. "I do not lack anything anyways, and you, young lady, do not have to place any wager for this."
"Hmm... that is not good because I like to play by the rules," Yue Ran said before gesturing to the sword spirit next to her. "Long Yuan."
"Yes, master," Long Yuan replied readily.
Long Yuan took out a few of the highest-quality demon beast crystal cores they had hunted from his space ring and placed them beside the chessboard.
"Then, sir, why do we not start our game?" Yue Ran smiled.
The young woman raised her eyebrows and tilted her head slightly to the side, like a fox that had dug a trap and was patiently waiting for its prey to jump into it. A cunning look slipped past her eyes.

In the busy and bustling Myriad Pearl City, the small teahouse was preparing to welcome the dusk as usual, but today seemed to be a little different. The usually vibrant and boisterous environment turned a little quiet, and even the actors in the opera troupe have gone home from work early today.
