Day 19
Everything hurts. My entire body is super sore. But after last night I understand why. As if a wall had broken down, suddenly my status is overrun with messages. But i'll skimp on looking at it for now, I need to go back to the cave and retrieve my master arrows.
I jump down onto the forest floor, the cool morning breeze rustling my hair. I run over to the cave, about a mile away. I can't believe I got this far out in such a short amount of time. That state I was in.. ‘Breakthrough’. It's amazing.
I climb back into the cave a few minutes later, and collect what's left of the battle. While I'm here, I'll eat as many ant parts as I can, to stock up on stats and more skills. Status!

Huh. well would you look at that? Looks like my level has reset. And instead of getting a new skill every five levels, it looks like the ones I already have will level up. I wonder what happens at level twenty five? And apparently, that golden state I was in put all my stats above one hundred. Kinda feels like cheating to get the reward, but i'll take it!
Welp, I have four skills to rank up, so I'll just go ahead and do that.
< [2nd] Tier [Intermediate Dismantling] Has ranked up into [3rd] tier: [Advanced Dismantling]- The effects of dismantling have been even more magnified. Quality limit has been increased even further, allowing for the dismantling and utilization of even more powerful beasts.>
< [2nd] Tier [Body Reinforcement] Has ranked up into [3rd] tier: [Supplementation]- Further increases the skill ceiling, allowing for even more stat growth. Grants the ability to slightly shift some stats to another. Amount of stats that can be supplemented will grow additively for each level, starting at one.>
< [1st] Tier [Regeneration] Has ranked up into [2nd] tier: [Greater Regeneration]- Increases regeneration of hp, can regenerate smaller limbs such as fingers, or chunks of flesh within a few hours. {Bleed} and similar conditions are less effective on the user.>
< [1st] Tier [Terrain Sense] Has ranked up into [2nd] tier: [Terrain Memorization]- Allows for precise tracking of memorable terrain. If you remember a place in vivid detail, you will be able to find your way back easily.>

Abilities huh? So that's where chaos potential went. Resonation.. Is probably what happens when I use two skills at once. What's odd is that I've done it before, I'm not sure why it only counts now.
What are abilities, and what does overload do?
< Insufficient authority >
< Overload: Increase one stat to 100. If that stat is already at or past 100, the stat will increase by 100. >
So, if I used overload on, say, stamina, then it would become one hundred. But, if stamina is already at one hundred, it would become two hundred. That’s completely busted.
Oh, I almost forgot, what’s a ‘skill molding’ coupon?
< ‘Skill Molding’ coupon: allows the user to shift a skills direct evolution path once. >
Hmm, it's an interesting option, but I don't see it being very useful right now. Still, it's good to have. I'll be saving it for later.
Unfortunately, it seems some of my master arrows broke. The shaft of two of them is snapped off, the fletching irreparably frayed. The arrow heads are still fine, though they might need a sharpen. I'm still not sure what the properties of the material are, all my theories so far are just guesswork, I have nothing concrete. My knife hasn't broken or even worn down at all, still keeping its mysterious sharpness since the day ‘I’ made it.
Well, I've managed to salvage my other three master arrows, along with the heads of the broken ones. I only have twenty eight stone arrows, so that won't last. My [Sharpening] skill has really been stagnating recently. So maybe it's time for another long crafting session. Before that, I want to get some decent feathers. The aero leaves I've been using are.. Fine, I guess. They just clash with the master arrows a lot, and they break really easily.

Alright, I've got some good stuff. I got vitality by munching on these weird sacks some of the higher level ants had. There was some fluid inside, though I was hesitant for a bit to eat it, it actually tastes like spearmint. Really cold. The organ is reminiscent of a heart, [Adv Dismantling] tells me it's some kind of healing organ, when triggered it'll pump out the liquid all across the body, healing all sorts of wounds all at once.
Seeing as how the skill I got from it doesn't have a level, my stomach must have integrated the body parts function as a skill. It's pretty cool, and could serve as an important life line, though I'm still not sure how good it is.
Alright, time to get a move on. Luckily, thanks to [Terrain memo] I can tell what direction my base is in. Thanks to that, I don't have to stress when I take the scenic route. Yeah, I could just beeline straight for my home, but I wanna relax a little before I get back to work. Funny how that's reversed since I got sent here. Before, my house was my stronghold. I would go out for school or work, drain my energy before resting in my bed.
Now, I end up going hunting to escape all the work I have piled up at home! Crazy how the tables have turned. I'm not exactly full right now, but it's time to start moving. I begin running to the otherside of the forest I escaped to last night.
While my assimilating stomach is certainly larger, and can hold more food, that doesn't explain the absolutely massive amount of ants I just ate. And how I'm still hungry. My theory is that I only absorb a super small amount (or none at all) of nutrients. It takes assimilating as priority, at least for raw food. I think if I cook it my stomach will turn that into nutrients instead of.. Xp? I guess?
As I run, my mind devolves into regurgitated country songs and embarrassing things I've done, as the sun rises and lowers from dawn to midday. If there's an internal clock skill, mine’s definitely leveled up. I can tell about five hours of straight running have passed. The terrain I've run through is mostly just forests and plains. Though I did pass a lake one time. Speaking of water features, I'm coming up on one now. I check my stamina, and I'm almost at 30%. I'd say that's a good enough reason for a break.
There's plenty of smooth boulders dotted around the, actually, more of a pond than anything. It's sparkly though. And I can't forget the waterfall, its cascading in a brilliant shower of mist, rainbow light flits about as the rising cloud interferes with the light.
I sit on one of the boulders, and like a habit, I check my status.

<[Long Strider] Experience threshold Reached. L8v -> Lv10>
<[Rapid Dash] Experience threshold Reached. Lv5 -> Lv7>
Man, I've had [Long Strider] for a long time. Well, two weeks. It feels like I've been here for months, but it's really only been that long huh? Oh uh, rank it up will you?
< [2nd] Tier [Long Strider] Has ranked up into [3rd] tier: [Travel]- Further improves stamina efficiency, counting not just for movements but all acts requiring stamina, including skill use. Increases the efficiency of other movement related skills.>
Man, I really need to hurry up and rank up [Multishot] and [Tracing]. Those are like my main skills.
I look at the water longingly, and a thought crosses my mind. I make sure to thoroughly inspect the perimeter around the pound.
Alright, bath time.
I begin the arduous process of stripping down. The process actually takes half an hour or so. When I made the armor, I had no intention of taking it off, so I didnt design anyway to remove it without breaking it. I end up carefully tearing the glue that bound the leather and spiraled bones together. Now that it's all off, I feel so refreshed and free.
I make sure to lay out the armor and pin the cloth down with some rocks. It's not particularly windy, but I'll be absolutely distraught if I lose these clothes. As I look at it all on the ground, I take a serious look at my “armor”, or lack thereof.
All the bones I wrapped around the leather are completely crushed. The chest piece is, well, smashed. I knew that already. All the ribs I had wrapped around my torso were gone, or shattered. The skull that had hung on my chest was mostly fine, a bit chipped here and there. My cape is certainly scratched. The decorative teeth I stitched at the ends have mostly all come off. It's noticeably uneven at the end in portions. Clearly the ants took a few big bites out of my mantle.
It's got a few holes in it. Annoying, but not gaping enough to consider throwing it away. It'll be annoying to fix though. Hmmm, should I stitch some leather over the holes? That might be my best bet, or I could taxidermy some different pelts to it. Obviously, I should just toss it, but I've grown too attached. Not just because it made me look cool, but this set absolutely saved my life. I can tell from how destroyed the armor is. At least the shoulder skulls are mostly unscathed.
As I think up new designs, I walk into the pool of water. I considered jumping, but I don't know how deep it is. Turns out, not very. Only about five feet high, not even up to my shoulders. Despite how gross and muddy the floor is, the water is crystal clear. I can even see some almost invisible fish lurking a few yards away.
I bask in the water, enjoying the view of the contorting light in the mist, until I remember I need to wash my hair too. God I needed a shower. I didn't even notice, but my skin is so much smoother now. It's no wonder people in these situations are always craving baths 24/7.
I float dead body style in the pool, letting the cool water lap at my ears, until I remember the brain eating amoeba story. Then I very quickly sit up and flounder in the water a bit. It's at that time I look down for the first time purposefully. No, not at the old johnson, but at my… is that a six pack?
No, of course not. To get a six pack you have to be very muscular, most likely from taking steroids… and very dehydrated. It must be a trick of the light. After all there's no way-
Suddenly, my mind flashes back to my status. Upon inspection, I notice my strength stat. Forty six. Wasn't I at thirteen when I was first here? So I'm three times as strong in.. less than three weeks. I acknowledge the steroid part. Clearly the system is unnatural. But come on, i've been drinking regularly-
< Class Skill: [Desperate Endurance] Experience threshold Reached. Lv3 -> Lv4>
Oh come on! You just leveled up! Guh.. What's the bonus now?
< 15 Weeks without food | 15 Days without water | 15 minutes without air >
Golly, that sure is a lot. Man. I am just straight up not human anymore huh? That's a bit sad to think about, but it was unavoidable I guess. I'm still mostly human, just.. A little more modular? Let's say I somehow do go home. What'll happen to my powers? Will I go from “hero” to zero? I've always felt bad about villains that lose their powers. It's just such a waste… Oh shoot, did I just compare myself to a villain? I hope that's not foreshadowing.
SLAM
??? I whirl around towards the source of the noise. To my left, the forest I came from, sparsely filled with short, normal size trees along with a few saplings here and there. To my right, a darker forest, the trees only about three to six feet taller than the left forest. The branches knot together, casting the floor in mild shadow. It's not pitch black or anything, but it's noticeably more spooky.
Unfortunately for me, the sound I needed to investigate didn't come from the happy and open one.“ Sigh.. Of course… “ I mutter to myself, reproachfully.
I get out of the water, wincing as my feet sink further into the soft mud with an audible scrunch. It's a truly disgusting feeling, but I can't be losing focus. The sound was less movement, and more something crashing.
I don't feel any shame being naked out in the open, a sparse difference to how I felt a week ago. I dont have the time to dry off, plus I don't want to get my clothes wet. So, I take my cloak and wrap it around myself like a bathrobe. I put a little more effort into the makeshift skirt than I really needed too, but after a few minutes of fidgeting, it was pretty sturdy.
I begin cautiously making my way towards the sound. Only two hundred or so feet away do I find the source of the sound, and a vast scene of destruction. Hunched in the middle of a desolate patch of deforestation was a-
…
That's a dragon isn't it?
Not your typical winged lizard, this one is clearly a wyrm. For those unfamiliar with the term, it's basically a snake with wings. But it's huge, silver scaled, and fatally injured. It's lying on.. Its side? I guess? Judging from the angle of its head, most likely. The Wyrm is covered in a bunch of cuts, and riddled with spots of gouged out scales and flesh.
Right under its majestic head, where a fish's gills would be, were some makeshift gills of its own. Six, colossal gashes are raked across its length, with this evil purple flame oozing out of it. The smoke from the villainous fire shapes into screaming skulls as it dissipates. Ah wonderful. Not ominous at all.
I feel a compelled sense of urgency, and stupidly, I emerge from the bushes. The dragon's eyes instantly swivel towards me. It narrows its pupils to slits, and I hear a weak growl emerge from its entire body, emanating in a threatening aura. I walk closer, before suddenly, pain in my back intensifies. It's so sharp I cry out in pain, before stumbling onto the ground.
I looked up and noticed the fire on its wound had also intensified. The Wyrm looked at me, I could almost.. Feel a sense of recognition in its eyes. Finally, my thirty six intellect kicks in, and the pieces fall together.
“... The wolf.”
The great monster continues to watch me.
“ It must have attacked you. That fire must be the curse. If you're anything like me, it won't heal, will it? Mine didn't tear through me, somehow. But yours is much more serious than mine. Hehe. check this out. “
Indeed. The claw strike I got from the sovereign hadn’t healed. I don't have a mirror so it's hard to tell, but I think my wound is reacting to the Wyrm’s. I turned around, showing the dragon my back, the six fingered claw wound was still etched into me, digging deep channels into my flesh. After a moment, I twist around again, to see an unknown emotion in its eyes. It's not angry. It's almost calm? Or.. accepting?
“ I’m no expert on monsters, but you seem strong. Unbelievably strong. On par with that wolf even. So how? How did you end up like this? “
A part of me wanted revenge. For making me feel so weak, so pathetic. I thought, maybe if I try my best, grow in power for a few months or years, I could beat it. Dispel my curse, and get my happy ever after. But this dragon.. It's so powerful. It's so far above me on the pecking order, I can feel its superiority. But if even this majestic beast couldn't defeat that monster, let alone run away……. Then what chance do I have?
I stew in momentary misery, until I spot movement. The dragon has been watching me intently. Eyes flickering with every movement. The wyrm moves one of its large, feathery wings away to reveal a set of its claws.
Oh, so more of an eastern dragon, and not a wyrm then?
Within one of its hands the great beast is clutching something. Round, and the same beautiful silver color as the rest of it. The wyrm flutters its wings, and sits up, before displaying its prize. My eyes widen in recognition, as the story becomes complete in my mind.
“... you weren't trying to fight the wolf. You really were trying to run. Maybe you didn't know he was there, or was too panicked to realize until it was too late. I suppose the reason doesn't matter, but the result. “
I look up at the wyrm, staring into its irises.
“ So what now? “
The cursed fire begins to fade. The vitality in its body starts to ebb, and the faintest trace of light diffuses from its eyes. It brings its mighty head down, once again resting on the floor, pointed at me. The wyrm brings its arm forward, seemingly losing strength as its talons lifelessly fall to the ground, revealing the wyrm's treasure. Or, her treasure.
I'm not sure why I care so much. We are connected in curse only. But by the way she looks at me, it's like I'm watching a friend die. The egg rolls out of her lifeless grip. And before it haphazardly slams into the floor, I sprint forward and catch it.
Was it chance? That I was the one she put her trust in? Would she have forked the egg over to any being that found her here? I don't know. I really don't but… we have some sort of connection, in what way I don't know. But it doesn't matter. I'll bear this burden. It's illogical, but isn't everything here outside the bounds of logic? Am I making decisions others wouldn't? Am I out of place? Wrong for my ideas?
Purpose is something we find for ourselves. It is not something that is given, or something we are born with. Nor is it a gift bestowed by others. It is something we find, learn, and take hold of by ourselves. It might be a wrong choice, something others find stupid or illogical. But this is my story. My choice, and my decision.
I take the egg, and look at the dying dragon mother next to me.
“ I’ll take good care of it. “
And for what feels like the first time in a long time. I smiled.
The wyrm, too, seemed happy. As it blinked for the final time. And all lay still.
< A superior soul has been detected. [[[Reap]]]? | Yes \ no>
< Reaped one colossal soul (Sky Wyrm Legacy) >
< You have an extremely high affinity with (Sky Wyrm Legacy) Begin imprint? >
Alright hold your horses' system. First, you gotta explain all of this. I gesture vaguely to the influx of new status notifications.
< Monsters above a certain power threshold are known as ‘Superiors’ and their souls are strong enough to linger after their deaths. Because of this, it is possible to [[[Reap]]] souls even if you are not responsible for the monsters end. >
< Monsters who are especially powerful, even among ‘Superiors’ can imbue their ‘Legacy’ into their souls. By ‘Imprinting’ a legacy that you have an affinity with, you can obtain special gifts. >
So what does ‘imprinting’ entail? And what sort of special gifts does it grant?
< Insufficient authority >
I already knew that, I just wanted to make sure. If I had the authority to see it, the system would have put it in the first explanation. Hmm, I know when I chose my class it said one of my perks was ‘raising my authority’ but how high is it?
< System Authority: Low >

< System Ranks: >

< Highest >
I suppose you can't tell me how to raise it?
Rather than another message, I get a warm feeling of correctness from somewhere.
Is there really nothing you can tell me about imprinting? Even the tiniest smidgen of knowledge would do.
< …The absorber will sustain minor physical changes. Affinity could also possibly change or shift in some way. Stat changes are expected. Skill gain unknown. Ability gain unknown. Charm will most likely increase. >
Charm? Why didn't you say that first! Begin imprint!
The status doesn't even appear when I make the mental command. Suddenly, I feel something. A massive knot roiling in my heart. Oh shit! Am I having a heart attack? Did I just give myself a heart attack? Silvery fire burst from my chest, right where my heart should be. I always forget if it's on the right or left side. Meh, I doubt it's important.
The flame intensifies, the inner fire resembling that same rainbow energy I see when I use [Existential Empower]. Once it appears to be at its full strength, the flame lurches to the side, and begins slithering across by body like a snake. It begins coiling around my right arm, sizzling my flesh as it does so. It hurts, but it's not unbearable. It's a level of pain I can withstand, though I might break my teeth.
The silver flame continues coiling down my arm until it reaches my wrist, then it goes on top of my hand, and sits there. The pain intensifies, as it cauterizes itself into my body. I fall to my knees, and resist the urge to scream. I do groan in pain though.
Minutes later, and the pain subsides. I look up from the ground to see my arm is steaming and red from the burning. Though the reddening quickly recedes as [Greater Regen] kicks into overdrive. It's not the steaming I'm focusing on though, it's my new tattoo.
True to my word, a strange looking sky wyrm has been imprinted on my arm, coiling all around until its graceful head rests on the back of my hand. I say its odd looking, due to the way its scales look. Rather than how most dragons look, with a bunch of small and smooth scales like any reptile, this one is composed of four dozen or so crackly plates.
The mother wyrm, still lying motionless a few feet away, is more of a perfect silver, while this tatted one looks like it has a bit of a blue tint. Not that it's ugly or anything, I'm just surprised the tattoo and dragon I got it from look so different.
< Imprint successful! >
< Acquired wind affinity and Draconic Affinity! (These will not be shown when using a flux crystal) >
< Your ability to handle flying creatures has increased! >
< You can now speak ‘Dragon tongue’! >
< Acquired new body part: Sky catalyst! Using magic besides ‘Innate’ type is now possible!>
< You are capable of creating ‘Bonds’ with a sky wyrm! >
< Acquired skill: [Storm Wise] >
< All Stats increased by 5 >
< Acquired advanced stat: Insight! >
< Achievement Acquired! >
That is a whole lot to unpack.
I have wind and draconic affinity, and I assume ‘affinity’ is referring to elements. Though I've never seen ‘draconic’ in any element wheels. At least this world is a bit original. I suppose that would make a ‘flux crystal’ something that tells us what affinities we have? I can speak dragon now. But not really. I don't have any new knowledge, so I think it's something that only activates when I actually attempt to talk to a dragon. Like an automatic translator.
I have a ‘Sky Catalyst’ which must be what this tattoo is called. Which will let me use magic, except for innate magic which i could always do? I have no clue how this magic system works. Me not being able to use normal magic this whole time explains that distasteful feeling I get when I look at the magic skills in the shop. I'm glad I didn't buy them before, since I apparently wouldn’t have been able to use them anyways.
I assume a bond has to do with my new egg friend here, soon to be a sky wyrm that I'll have to ‘bond’ with. A new skill, a solid stat bonus, and a new stat altogether. Insight.. lets me assume things with confidence. It lets me take knowledge I already have and piece it together in a logical fashion.

Alright. I stand up, and walk back over to my little picnic area. I begin gathering my things, slipping my clothes and armor back on. Though really, I just wrap the green leather around my arms and legs again. Once content with myself, I hold the egg carefully in my arms and start heading straight home.
Well, I was planning on taking the scenic route to cool my nerves, but now I have this new burden to take care of. For that reason, I'll just make a beeline straight for my base. It should only take a day or two. But once I get home, I'll just stay put until this thing hatches. Hopefully nothing else will be waiting for me when I arrive.... Damn, I need to stop doing that!!!
