Chapter 553 Essence of life
553 Essence of life
"Only the different experiences of life make me feel that I am not wasting my time. My mission was lost in the annals of history; I don't want it anymore. My life is lost among monotony and continuous and boring use of my skills; I don't want that life anymore."
"So I decided to look at the world. I wanted to find out what other experiences there were and how much more food there was. And when I decided to do that, I found a vampire lying on the ground, surrounded by corpses of my race."
"Initially, I thought about killing him, but that would be falling back into my foolish mission; I didn't want that. After all, I can't travel back in time to look for that person. And if I did look for him, he would surely kill me, preventing me from continuing to enjoy the fish. That's why I thought: maybe he will like my food."
"So I saved you. I gave you fish, and you liked it, and then I realized I enjoyed it. Watching you eat it was pleasurable because I cooked it; it seemed different. That's a difference in life that I want to enjoy. That's why maybe I'm different. I used to be the same as them, but I didn't want strength, so I started to understand that life should not only be about that. Maybe it's because I've lived a lot, and none of my race has. Or maybe it's because I'm dumb, and they're not."
"But whatever. Wars and supremacy don't do me any good. But everyone is looking for it; why? You ask them, and they only tell you to 'Rule', to... A desire to fill their ego. It's no use to live a million years if you won't be different than everyone else. Rulers, there are millions, and you would only rule over them, and that doesn't make you different because the essence is the same. That bores me; I don't want that either."
After so much talking, a long sigh escaped her mouth. She was venting and hadn't noticed. After a long sigh, she smiled and looked at the dark sky.
"Being different from everyone makes all the difference; the stars are, and each is beautiful in its own way. Understanding life makes a difference; poor people are happier than rich people strive for happiness. They confused the concept."
"That's why I want to enjoy those moments, small and fleeting, but they give meaning to my life. Maybe I'm no different, I just want to enjoy a little more. Or maybe I shouldn't have been a devourer in the first place. Maybe I was born in a different world or a different body... Hehe, I guess no one will ever know. They will only know I once existed when I die; after all, if the Dietrich Greats took a toll on time, how will it not take a toll on me? Then I will give my life meaning."
"I want to be different; I want to enjoy the little things in life and forget about the wars for supremacy."
"Or at least that's all I'd like to say and be able to do, but my race needs me too; abandoning them would make me different, but it would make me a traitorous scum who left them to their mercy. I don't want that either... I guess life is hard."
Her words, though they seemed simple, struck a small chord in Matthew's heart. His mind wandered between new thoughts, past memories, and recent understandings.
All of it is connected to one thing.
The essence of life.
The good exists because the bad is present. You cannot enjoy peace if you do not know chaos. You cannot understand the good if you do not know that the bad exists. Happiness and sadness go hand in hand because if you never had one of them, you don't understand what stage you are in.
You would be in a stage of monotony when you have not seen both good and bad.
Monotony is marked by the repetition of endless patterns, without any change, where you will usually only notice a part of life for a long period.
That's when you lose sight of the essence of life.
You lose sight of your path, you fall into monotony, and you no longer understand it.
It's like being plunged into sadness because someone who was there before is no longer there. You did not value their presence, and now you are left with only memories by their side.
Sadness overwhelms you in such a way that you think it will drown you, but then you remember a beautiful memory together, and you smile in the midst of the pain. That's when the essence of life comes back to you.
The monotony of life with that person prevented you from seeing the beauty of life with him/her, and it was necessary that a moment of absence come so that you could begin to value his/her presence.
That is the essence of life.
A person who has lived for a long time tends to value it more. This valuation is born out of suffering and continuous joy.
In Lilith's case, she has lived a long time.
She experienced a long monotony, and the little things in life seemed so great to her that she would give her life for them.
For Matthew, this is fascinating and enlightening.
'You don't have to worry so much about tomorrow and live more for today... How many years ago was it that I forgot?'
'Enjoying the moment is always the path to greatness; it seems like many millions of years ago that I heard that saying. Father always said it.'
'Enjoy the moment; it is always the right path to greatness.'
He didn't expect that a small talk in the darkness of this world, in a freezing cold place, with a small campfire in front of him, could bring back so many memories and thoughts. Even less, he didn't expect something like this to happen to him with a person who should be his enemy.
He couldn't help but smile a little.
"You seem to be a person who has lived a long time, you understand life better than me."
"Haha, maybe."
"What if I told you I was the Matthew Dietrich your mind tells you to kill? Would you fulfill your mission? Or would you understand your path?" Matthew's sudden question left Lilith a little confused.
But she answered.
"If you were really Matthew Dietrich, the first thing I would do would be to ask you: What's over there?" As she said this, she pointed toward a slightly obscured region of the sky, which made Matthew frown.
He couldn't understand her question, so he looked at her.
She smiled even wider.
"That's how I know you're not Matthew Dietrich. And if you were, you've weakened greatly, so if you were, I'd wait for you. I would wait for you to return to your most powerful stage. Then I would ask you to fight."
"And already, you wouldn't eat me?"
"Why would I eat you? I told you, I am an exception. Even your abilities are of no interest to me. I don't seek supremacy; I just seek to live life's differences."
Matthew nodded.
"You seem to understand your way."
She shook her head.
"Honestly, I don't understand it. That's why I want to enjoy the differences in life; maybe they'll make me understand it." She looked at the campfire again and put a fish to roast there.
"I also want to eat fish and make it so my race can live in their own world. Then I can travel there and know what is there." Saying this, she raised her half-cooked fish to point to the same region of space before retracting her hand to take a bite of the fish.
Her mouth twitched a little funny as if it tasted bad to her. "This raw taste doesn't make sense. Why do some people say the medium is better? They clearly don't know something well cooked." She grumbled and put the fish back on the fire.
