Chapter 216: Stillness
They were all frozen down once again but more importantly Linda, who just starred up ahead, because now it all made sense moreover the title of the speeches Linda puzzle it all together.
First, the cabinet meeting which was just as she guessed it right was an act, and there was actually no cabinet meeting or maybe with one of two members. With that, the news picked it up and pushed out to the public and for the people it all made sense.
Chains of attack happened in the city, people were massacred and buildings were burned down, but for them once thing doesn't make any sense at all, what happened at Marco's house?
There were so many questions in them but the most important one of all of them was the Vice President's death and the cabinet meeting that William just did was the perfect thing to actually signal to the people that action will be taken against whoever killed him, because the news came out that way… well that was controlled by William who has connection and made the news to publish and report on Carter's death that he was assassinated by unknown people.
It was the perfect narrative to actually get what he needed for the support of the people and with that Linda understood that William is not against them or against James Bellini but actually trying to maintain control and tries to do something right in his fucking life and…. who does she know it?
By the people because Carter was a guy who was hated but still people came out not because they loved him, but because of the position he held. A vice president dies, there gotta be something to come out and look at what's going to happen. Maybe even start protesting in his name because civilians are not dumb.
Death of a vice president can also mean total power into the president's hand and it could mean it was all an act and actually it was a government effort to kill him. Well, not a lot of people thought about that but for sure there were some in the crowds waiting for the speeches.
Second, the name of the speech all aligns with each other and reading only the title says that there is going to be big change to the country life, big changes that can bring a better future at least that was the title says and well the president's appearance is clear indicating something drastic will take place.
"This is ISB News we are here with thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people before the Presidential Building, where, in a rare and urgent move, the president held a emergency Cabinet meeting after the shocking death of Vice President Alex Carter and sources are now saying it was an assassination by unknown individuals. And things only escalated after what happened last night in 5th avenue, a chain of violent, targeted attacks. Marco De Luca, a known gangster, saw his restaurant hit, several of his coffee shops burned down, and even his home was attacked. Eyewitnesses described tactical precision. Sources now say it may have been the Intelligence Force behind it. If that's true this isn't just gang violence anymore, this could be state-sanctioned. So who was behind it? Another gang? Or something deeper? Was De Luca silenced? Is there a connection to the Vice President's death? We don't know yet, but today, the questions have to be answered."
"And here's what we just saw, top officials arriving through the secured east wing: the Justice Minister, the Director of the Intelligence Force, high-ranking officers from the International Security Bureau, and the National Security Bureau of Investigation. They said nothing. This isn't politics. This is a crisis. For ISB News, I'm Leial Opera , and we'll keep bringing you updates as this story continues to unfold."
"What's going to happen if they don't receive it well?" Linda asked. "And we can only declare a national emergency if we have concrete evidence that chains of attack will happen that are under terrorist motive. Without that, this is nothing and they will see through it." She explained, but William looked at her in a way that wasn't really told he was that worried.
"Linda, I haven't slept since yesterday and I went through everything with my staff, some cabinet members, the adviser, the chief of security and defence, to see what we can do and in what way that is actually believable. And you know what we realized?" He asked as he stood up.
She shook her head.
"We realized that the cartel is already under classification of terrorist group and not just that, they are the real ones who killed Carter, so we can categorize ourselves as terrorist group which means the national emergency will make people understand it, who knows what they're going to attack next because they are going to, especially after that Emmanuel guy died." He said as he looked at the others too. "So just read through the speech, there are highlighted parts that are the most important ones.
"What about the Union?" Thomas asked as he looked at William.
"They can shove their heads into their ass, I don't care about them and legally they are charged by their own law. They can't interfere in a country's domestic problems only if I ask them and the cabinet, so there is no worry about them." He said as he looked back at Thomas. "But it will come with a lot of work because they will send their agents to look at what is happening, I'm sure about it."
"They will, sir." Thomas said. "They would love to interfere even if they don't need to, especially when we are the lowest ranked of all the countries in the Union. They will want to find out what has happened and who is controlling it."
"But that would mean they are illegally and unlawfully operating in a foreign country." Benjamin said, and it was true.
The Union has many laws and plenty of flaws, but it's notorious for its intense efforts to infiltrate other countries. They always want to see through foreign governments, controlling them behind the scenes, and gathering every piece of information possible, even sometimes interfering with elections. They also frequently conduct private investigations on their own.
But within the Union, there's a specific law agreed upon by all member countries: if any member state attempts to infiltrate, send agents, deploy military forces, or take any action aimed at controlling or overthrowing another member's government or secretly investigating it this is strictly forbidden and considered a serious crime.
In short, such actions are viewed as attacks on a country and are clear violations of international law.
Yeah, and the key word there is intentional law, because the Union is scared as shit from the Bermuda Convention and the High Court, because they are the only fucking people and organization in the whole fucking world that actually do their job and do it very well.
They don't give a fuck about money, you can't bribe them, you can't influence them. If you fuck with the international law, they are finding you and will put you in jail or sometimes, if you really fuck up, they will put you in front of a firing squad.
And the thing is William signed the Bermuda Convention.
"Bermuda will protect us and our people from foreign interference, so there is no problem, but now, get ready, we have 10 minutes and we will be our." He said, and with that just sat back down and started reading through once again his speech while the others sat down too except Linda.
She started shaking like crazy because, first, she had never spoken in front of that many people; second, she didn't even know what the speech was. What if there was something completely outrageous in it? And third, this wasn't just some outrageous plan to work with a gangster; it was a full-blown crisis, both in the country and on an international level… one misstep, and everything would be over.
"Should we bet on it? That they will say something that just helps us even more?" Hector said, as he was now sitting in the living room with, well, everyone.
On his side was James, beside him Sophia, then Finn, Ramirez. Dani was the only one missing, well, he needed to count the money and prepare it to transfer it.
"They're going to say something outrageous, I'm sure of it." James said as he looked at Hector, then back to the TV, where thousands of people were being shown, and, well, he was a little worried about it.
What if they say his name out loud before the whole country, that he is the number one enemy, that he killed Carter, that he was behind all of it… that would be fucked up.
"If they're against us, that would be the biggest gangster war, not against other gangsters, but against the government. Shit, that would be crazy." Finn said from the side, and everybody looked at him because, what the fuck was he saying right now? "I mean… nothing, just forget it." He said with a smile.
Well, it really would be something a gangster versus the government.
