Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Yongjila!

"Since I can't attack you, you can't attack me now either, right?" Sabrina stared coldly at Robert, her piercing gaze unwavering.

However, Robert remained calm and composed. In his mind, Sabrina was indeed formidable, using her Psychic abilities to assist Casey effectively. But ultimately, her lack of true battle experience made her overconfident.

It appeared that Casey had used Confusion to form an invisible protective shield around itself. To land an attack, Robert would need to break through this shield. But would he do so by brute force?

Absolutely not.

"Haunter, come out and use Mud Bomb directly," Robert commanded, his voice steady.

Mud Bomb was a Poison-type move Robert had taught Haunter using a skill disc purchased from the Pokémon Emporium. In the games, it had an accuracy of 90 and dealt substantial damage. In reality, it was even more formidable. If it hit, it would not only drain the opponent's stamina but also poison them, making it a truly troublesome move.

"Gastly~"

Haunter emerged from the shadows to Casey's left, summoning two blobs of poisonous purple sludge between its ghostly hands. Without hesitation, it launched them directly at Casey.

"What?" Sabrina's eyes widened in shock.

No matter what she did now, Haunter had already thrown the Mud Bombs at Casey. Sabrina had no time to counter them directly.

Despite this being Robert's first battle using Haunter, it was clear that the two had developed an excellent synergy. Before entering Saffron Gym, Robert had put Haunter through rigorous training, preparing for various contingencies against Sabrina. He had considered numerous strategies she might employ and formulated counters for each one.

If the opponent relied on a tight defense, there was no need to force an attack—harassment would suffice.

If the opponent relied on dodging via teleportation, sneak attacks were the best strategy.

Sure enough, the first battle unfolded just as Robert had anticipated. When Sabrina instructed Casey to focus on defense, Haunter struck immediately.

Even if Sabrina reacted quickly, she had no way of stopping Casey from taking damage—except by ordering it to dodge.

Casey's Psychic abilities, while powerful, were not limitless. Even with Sabrina's amplification, they couldn't sustain an infinite defense. The first Mud Bomb might be blocked.

But what about the second?

And the third?

Eventually, Casey's energy would be exhausted. The moment the Confusion barrier weakened, Haunter's Mud Bombs would hit. Once poisoned, Casey would be at a severe disadvantage, its stamina gradually drained.

Sabrina recognized this, and for the first time, a flicker of panic crossed her usually stoic face.

She knew that if Casey were hit by the Mud Bomb, even if it wasn't immediately knocked out, the poison would spell disaster.

"Casey, drop the Confusion barrier and counter with an Illusion Beam! Strike the Mud Bombs back! Don't hold back—I'll restore your energy afterward!"

Casey, trusting its trainer completely, opened its narrowed eyes. It raised its hands, summoning powerful psychic energy to unleash a counterattack against the incoming Mud Bombs.

"Trying to fight back? I won't give you the chance!"

"Haunter, use Confuse Ray! Disrupt Casey's actions and interrupt its attack!"

Robert's counter was immediate and precise.

"Gastly~"

Haunter's hands glowed as it unleashed a strange, flickering yellow-red light toward Casey.

Sabrina's eyes sharpened. "Not good! Casey, teleport!"

She had no choice. If Casey were hit by Confuse Ray, it would fall into confusion, becoming completely vulnerable.

Casey obeyed instantly, disappearing from its position in a blink of light, narrowly avoiding the incoming Confuse Ray.

"Tch. Alright then, time to evolve!" Sabrina's voice rang with determination.

Realizing that Casey alone could not defeat Haunter, she made a bold decision—to trigger its evolution mid-battle.

Sabrina's body began to emit a radiant white glow. Simultaneously, Casey was enveloped in the same brilliant light.

With a flash, Casey's small frame vanished, replaced by a taller, more refined figure. The Pokémon now had a fox-like appearance, its body covered in golden fur. Its deep-set eyes and narrowed gaze gave it an intense, intelligent expression. Its torso bore brown shoulder guards, resembling armor, while a leather-like chest plate and triangular abdominal markings adorned its form. A thick, segmented tail with brown rings swayed behind it.

Its limbs were now more defined, jointed like a humanoid figure. Its hands and feet had three sharp claws each, and in its right hand, it clutched a silver spoon—a symbol of its vastly increased Psychic power.

Sabrina smirked. "Let's see you handle this, Robert. Yongjila is in a completely different league now!"

Robert, however, showed no sign of worry. Instead, he grinned. "Evolving mid-battle? That's impressive. But evolution alone won't guarantee you victory."

Haunter hovered in the air, its eerie grin unchanging. Robert's eyes gleamed with confidence.

The real battle was just about to begin.
