Two days later, around noon, on Route 123 near the area connecting to Route 118, a clearing surrounded by trees lay still under the sun.
At this moment, a shiny Beautifly and an Ursaring were engaged in an intense battle in the clearing, where patches of wild grass grew sporadically.
Both trainers were focused on the battlefield, watching every move of their Pokémon before issuing attack commands.
From the current battle situation, it was evident that Beautifly held the upper hand. Its elegant, agile, and swift aerial maneuvers left the ground-bound Ursaring helpless, as all its attacks were effortlessly dodged.
"Ursaring, run faster and try another Thunder Wave!"
The trainer of the Ursaring, seeing his Pokémon panting heavily from relentless chasing, gritted his teeth and gave another attack command.
Upon hearing the command, Ursaring also clenched its teeth, pushed off with its limbs, and abruptly doubled its running speed. It quickly widened the distance between itself and the colorful Beautifly hovering above it.
Sparks of electricity began to flicker on Ursaring's body as it prepared its attack.
"Close in and use Aerial Ace to interrupt its move."
Before Ursaring could launch its Thunder Wave, Beautifly's trainer swiftly issued a counter-command. Almost instantly, Beautifly flapped its wings sharply.
The next moment, a thunderous crack split the air, and Beautifly's figure appeared right in front of Ursaring.
Seeing its opponent suddenly appear in front of it, Ursaring's eyes gleamed with determination as it continued to charge forward.
However, it was taken aback to find that it had only hit a fading afterimage.
Before Ursaring could react, Beautifly's ethereal figure reappeared behind it, striking decisively and sending the startled Ursaring flying. The Thunder Wave attack was immediately interrupted and rendered ineffective.
"Stop playing around! Use the simplest and most effective move to end the battle. Show respect to your opponent and finish it quickly with Gust!"
Frowning at Beautifly's habit of showing off by taunting its opponent with its speed, Sato sternly reprimanded the Pokémon, who was fluttering playfully instead of pressing its advantage.
Upon hearing Sato's admonishment, Beautifly's eyes flashed with discontent.
However, seeing the serious expression on Sato's face, it quickly dropped its dissatisfaction and followed his command.
With a mere thought, Beautifly summoned flying-type energy from its surroundings. The energy joyfully converged, forming a towering white whirlwind nearly two meters tall.
The whirlwind moved with astonishing speed, engulfing Ursaring just as it struggled to its feet. When the whirlwind dissipated, Ursaring lay on the ground, unable to battle.
This was just a casual one-on-one roadside battle. After defeating the Bug Catcher who had emerged from the tall grass, Sato and his opponent exchanged handshakes as per tradition.
"Wow, your Beautifly is amazing! I've never seen one fly so fast. My Ursaring was completely outmatched in speed," said Shiro, the Bug Catcher, looking enviously at the Beautifly now perched on Sato's shoulder.
As a veteran Bug Catcher transitioning into more competitive training, his sharp eye quickly discerned the extraordinary capabilities of Sato's Beautifly.
"Beauti~fly~~"
Hearing the praise, Beautifly paused its drinking from the glass of water infused with melted gemstone-grade PokeBlocks in Sato's hand. It lifted its head, straightened its proboscis, and chirped proudly.
"Don't encourage her. She's strong, but way too conceited. Anyway, as agreed, lead me to Route 118," Sato said, shaking his head with a smile.
After rescuing Marcus, Sato didn't return to the village to report back to the elder. He knew the incident had escalated beyond what he anticipated.
Darkrai, the guardian Pokémon of Mt. Pyre, placed there by the Mikuri Clan, had been gravely injured. This was bound to provoke their wrath.
While Sato had no choice but to injure the weakened Darkrai in self-defense, the fact remained that he had severely wounded it and even obtained a shard of the Nightmare Crystal.
Looking at the situation, it was clear that Team Magma was the main culprit behind the invasion of Mt. Pyre.
However, Sato, initially an unexpected third party with the pretense of rescuing Marcus, ended up inadvertently assisting Team Magma in their battle against Darkrai.
The Mikuri Clan, a powerful family with vast influence in the Hoenn region, wouldn't bother distinguishing between masterminds and accomplices. Their normal response would likely involve eliminating everyone involved, considering the severity of the injury inflicted upon their legendary guardian Pokémon.
To avoid entanglement, Sato decided to leave immediately, even skipping out on claiming the second half of his reward from the village elder.
That said, Sato wasn't going to forget the elder's promised payment. He had entrusted Marcus, who was endlessly grateful to him, to relay a message to the elder: send the reward to the Pokémon Center in Pewter City.
The Mikuri Clan's influence was undeniable, and their intelligence network spread across Hoenn. Before half a day had passed, they had already tracked down Sato.
Surprisingly, instead of blaming him, they expressed their gratitude. They claimed he had thwarted Team Magma's plot and restored Darkrai's sanity.
As a token of their thanks, they gifted him a TM containing the Surf move and ten million PokeDollars. Not a single word was mentioned about the Nightmare Crystal shard.
To top it off, Wallace, whom Sato hadn't heard from in a while, finally reached out to him. Wallace also offered words of thanks, exchanged stories of their journeys, and finally requested another batch of gemstone-grade PokeBlocks.
