The Elite Four of Hoenn Region stood as the final gatekeepers before the Champion: Sidney, Phoebe, Glacia, and Drake. Each master of their craft, each a legend in their own right.
The first Elite standing before John was Sidney.
Sidney, it sounded like the name of someone's mild-mannered son-in-law, but the reality couldn't be further from that assumption. He was a rough-looking young man with a shock of purple hair sprouting from an otherwise bald head, dressed in a black shirt and purple suit pants that rode high enough to expose his ankles. Pointed shoes completed the look, along with a gaudy gold watch that screamed
"I've got money and I want you to know it." He looked like he'd stepped straight out of a street gang recruitment poster.
His mastery of Dark-type Pokemon fit his aesthetic perfectly.
"Welcome, challenger! I'm Sidney from the Elite Four," he called out, his voice carrying a surprising magnetism that completely contradicted his appearance. "You make a good impression on me, and I'm guessing this is going to be one hell of a match."
John blinked. If he closed his eyes, Sidney could have been a smooth-talking radio host or a charismatic middle-aged uncle. The disconnect was jarring.
"Come on, let's enjoy a battle that can only be experienced here in the Pokemon League!"
Despite his rough exterior, there was genuine enthusiasm in Sidney's voice. Perhaps the delinquent look was just leftover from his past, a reformed bad boy who'd found his calling as an Elite Four member.
The battle arena materialized around them, and John felt his pulse quicken. This was it.
[John VS Sidney! First Match of the Victory Road Challenge!]
"Now beginning the Hoenn Region Pokemon Victory Road Challenge!" the referee's voice boomed across the arena. "Elite Four Sidney versus Trainer John! The rules are simple: full party battle, six-on-six. When all Pokemon on one side lose their fighting ability, the battle is over!"
John nodded, his mind already racing through strategies. Unlike his real-world battles against the Elite Four, which were typically six-versus-four affairs, the game demanded perfection. Six-on-six meant no room for error.
The challenge ahead was daunting. To face the Champion, he'd need to defeat twenty-four Elite Four-level Pokemon consecutively, with no opportunity to swap out his team between battles. It was a test of endurance as much as skill.
"Trainers, release your Pokemon!" the referee commanded.
"Let's go!" Sidney and John threw their Pokeballs simultaneously.
Two Pokemon materialized in flashes of light.
Sidney's choice was a Shiftry, its wooden clogs clicking against the arena floor as it settled into a battle stance. [LV85], according to John's analysis.
John's answer was Blaziken, flames already dancing around its wrists as it took its position. Also level 85, months of grinding had finally paid off.
'At least now they can match the Elite Four in terms of raw power, John thought. The Champion is probably level 90.'
"Battle begin!" the referee shouted.
"Shiftry, Agility!" Sidney opened with a speed boost, clearly recognizing the type disadvantage his Grass/Dark-type faced against John's Fire/Fighting powerhouse.
Shiftry's form became ethereal, its movements erratic and ghost-like as it built up speed. The strategy was obvious, if it couldn't win in a head-on confrontation, it would rely on hit-and-run tactics.
But Sidney's tactical planning was interrupted by an unexpected sight.
In the distance, a basketball-sized Aura Sphere was condensing between Blaziken's clawed hands, its surface rippling with energy that seemed to flow in impossible spirals. The power radiating from it was palpable, far beyond anything a normal Aura Sphere should possess.
Sidney's eyes widened. "What the hell—"
"Spiral Aura Sphere," John called out with a grin, "fire!"
The enhanced attack launched from Blaziken's palms like a guided missile, tracking Shiftry's erratic movements with mechanical precision. No matter how fast or agile Sidney's Pokemon was, the spiraling energy sphere adjusted its trajectory to match.
"Razor Leaf!" Sidney commanded desperately, hoping to detonate the attack prematurely.
The sharp leaves sliced through the air, but the moment they made contact with the spiral Aura Sphere, they were consumed entirely, not deflected, not scattered, but completely absorbed.
"That's impossible!" Sidney's composure cracked. "Shiftry, Protect!"
It was a last-ditch effort. Shiftry, a Pokemon built for offense rather than defense, crossed its fan-like hands in front of its chest, generating a shimmering barrier.
BOOM!
The explosion was thunderous. Sidney watched in horror as the spiral Aura Sphere punched straight through Shiftry's Protect like it was made of paper, striking the Pokemon's crossed arms and driving it back into the arena wall with devastating force.
When the smoke cleared, Shiftry lay motionless among the rubble.
"Shiftry is unable to battle! Blaziken wins!" the referee announced.
Sidney recalled his fallen Pokemon, his expression grim. That Blaziken is no joke. I need to completely rethink my approach.
He selected his second Pokeball and hurled it skyward. "Your turn!"
A vulture-like Pokemon emerged, Mandibuzz, with its distinctive gray-black feathers and flesh-colored body. Unlike Shiftry, this one had the advantage of dual Dark/Flying typing, making it immune to Fighting-type moves.
"Mandibuzz, Hurricane!" Sidney decided to abandon close combat entirely in favor of area control.
The massive bird Pokemon spread its wings wide, generating a howling windstorm that engulfed the entire battlefield. The hurricane-force winds battered everything in their path, including Blaziken.
"Aura Sphere," John commanded again, seemingly unfazed by the change in tactics.
Blaziken planted its feet firmly, energy once again gathering between its hands. The familiar spiral pattern formed, blue light pulsing with contained power.
The spiral Aura Sphere launched forward like a freight train, carving a path straight through the center of the hurricane. The winds parted around it, unable to alter its course.
"Air Slash!" Sidney shouted, adding a second layer of defense.
Mandibuzz's wings became blur of motion, each stroke generating razor-sharp crescents of compressed air. The barrage of Air Slash attacks struck the spiral Aura Sphere in rapid succession, creating a series of metallic clangs that echoed across the arena.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
After absorbing more than a dozen hits, the spiral Aura Sphere finally detonated in a brilliant explosion.
"Got it!" Sidney's eyes lit up with relief. His strategy was working.
THOOM!
The sound of impact made Sidney's blood run cold. When he turned back to the battlefield, Blaziken was somehow directly in front of Mandibuzz, one powerful leg wreathed in flames pinning the larger Pokemon to the ground.
Sidney stared in disbelief. "When did it—"
"Blaze Kick," John said simply, as if the impossible positioning was the most natural thing in the world.
Mandibuzz's eyes rolled back as it lost consciousness, overwhelmed by the super-effective Fire-type attack.
"Mandibuzz is unable to battle! Blaziken wins!"
Sidney stood frozen, trying to process what had just happened. Two Pokemon down, and he still had no idea how to handle this mysterious Blaziken.
