Since Chris didn't replace his Pokémon, and no Pokémon was defeated on his side, Koizumi Koizumi sent out his last Pokémon, Roserade, for the fourth round. It didn't have any type advantage against Steelix's moves, but this was already the best option he could muster against Mega Steelix.
His other two Pokémon who hadn't had a chance to battle would have fared even worse against Steelix's typing.
This would also be the final round of the match.
Koizumi sent out Roserade not to make a last desperate stand, but simply to end this humiliating battle—sending out Roserade was merely going through the motions.
He had cried, but he wasn't foolish enough to lack the courage to send a fourth Pokémon into battle.
If he'd done that, he would not only be considered a disgrace by trainers across China, but even Hattori, who had coached him throughout his journey, would likely expel him from the school!
Therefore, Koizumi could only silently concede the fourth victory to Chris.
"Roserade is unable to battle! Steelix wins! Trainer Koizumi has lost all four of his Pokémon, making Trainer Chris from China the final winner of this duel!" the referee announced.
"Thank you for your hard work. Go back and have a good rest," Chris said as he took out Steelix's Poké Ball and recalled his Pokémon, who had now reverted from its Mega Evolution.
Steelix hadn't emerged unscathed from the battle. It had faced head-on collisions with several super-effective moves from its opponents. If not for its extraordinary defensive capabilities, it would have likely fallen long before.
Chris turned and bowed respectfully to the audience before stepping off the stage.
As for the trainer from the island nation whom he had just defeated...
Let him cry. An adult must always be responsible for his words.
Sympathy? He had brought this upon himself.
Before the match, Wanda had shown Chris the boastful comments Koizumi had made in his home country about how easily he would defeat Chris.
Now, those words had come back to haunt him.
People without true strength who engage in trash talk deserve the humiliation when they're proven wrong.
After the match concluded, Chris walked through the contestant tunnel amid the cheers of the entire audience.
"Boss, your world ranking has been released," Wanda said, waiting for Chris in the player corridor.
"That quickly? I just won," Chris remarked with surprise.
"It updates in real-time the moment the referee announces the result."
"Really? It seems the World Pokémon Tournament Organization has taken notice of my battle against the competitor from Japan. What's my ranking?"
"Ranked 632nd," Wanda replied, handing the tablet in her hand to Chris.
"That's pretty respectable," Chris nodded approvingly, but didn't examine the details too closely.
Ordinary Gym Trainers, even if they defeated opponents in Ranking Tournaments, would typically place around 800 or 900. For him to debut at 632nd indicated that the World Pokémon Contest committee held his abilities in high regard.
Chris suspected it was likely due to the bonus points earned by his impressive display with Mega Gardevoir, Mega Garchomp, and Mega Steelix.
As long as one had the stamina to sustain it, possessing Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution represented a formidable advantage that couldn't be ignored.
However, ranking 632nd in the World Pokémon Contest wasn't particularly exceptional.
This was merely the official recorded ranking.
Many masters never participated in the World Pokémon Contest at all. Just like his Senior Stephen and Lucas, both top-tier investigators in their own right.
When the qualification period for the Eight Masters Tournament approached, numerous dark horses would emerge from unexpected places each year.
Those duels represented the pinnacle of competitive battling.
Now at 632nd, he was in the 600-699 bracket, which meant he could challenge trainers in the 500-599 rank.
But there was no need to rush up the rankings.
The higher one's current ranking, the more likely they were to become targets for others attempting to improve their own standings.
To effectively climb the rankings, it would be better to wait until a few months before the Eight Masters Tournament began.
"How are preparations coming along for tomorrow's Pokémon auction?" Chris asked, changing the subject.
"Everything's ready," Wanda replied, swiping the tablet to display a form listing all participants registered for the event.
Even though they had raised the entry requirements this time, the available spots had filled instantly.
Even wealthy individuals seeking special consideration would approach their own mentors, like Vladimir...
Chris only knew about these happenings secondhand, as his teacher hadn't mentioned anything directly to him. Likely his teacher didn't want to burden Chris with such trivial matters.
"Good. You'll be the host tomorrow, and I'll observe from the audience," Chris decided. The responsibility for Pokemon sales would eventually fall to Wanda anyway.
Since they were still at Green Valley Gym, it made sense for her to take over as soon as possible.
He would be present and could intervene if necessary.
"Understood, boss!" Wanda agreed matter-of-factly. She had long anticipated this transfer of duties.
"By the way, after tomorrow's ten Pokémon, add these two Pokémon.
You can use them as a selling point to generate excitement among the trainers before they arrive."
Chris took out two Poké Balls and handed them to Wanda. The remaining ten Pokémon had already been finalized and were currently housed in the ranch.
Inside these two additional Poké Balls were Totem Pokémon.
One was a Gumshoos obtained after collecting 20 Totem Stickers.
The other was an Alolan Marowak given to him when he had collected 40 Totem Stickers.
After gathering his fortieth Totem Sticker on Akala Island, Chris had visited Professor Oak(Alolan). The professor had presented him with three options:
An Alolan Marowak, an Araquanid, or an Alolan Dugtrio.
The strength of these three Pokémon had increased compared to those obtained with 20 Totem Stickers, though only by a factor of 0.8. Without much interest in training them himself, Chris had chosen the Alolan Marowak, finding it the most appealing.
It would pair nicely with Gumshoos as a special surprise for this Pokémon auction.
Though not as rare as Bagon and other highly-sought species, these were still Totem Pokémon.
He was confident there would be Trainers interested in acquiring them.
"Alright, I'm heading back to rest. I'll leave tomorrow's scheduling to you," Chris said, waving dismissively as he walked away.
"What about the reporter reception? You won't attend?" Wanda asked.
"Not interested. Handle those reporters yourself," Chris replied. He detested these kinds of publicity events.
Wanda watched as Chris departed. "Very well, boss. You can leave it to me with complete confidence."
