Chapter 95: A Motivated Charizard! The Dual-Defense Energy Cube
Inside the training room.
Boom!
The Aura Sphere exploded against Larvitar's sturdy body.
Excited, Hikaru rubbed his hands together.
After his Aura Force advanced to the intermediate level, he could now unleash Aura Sphere himself.
Although its power was weaker than Lucario's, it matched that of a Level 15 Lucario.
"Larvi?"
Larvitar tilted its head, seemingly unaffected by the attack.
Meanwhile, Hikaru felt a sting in his body, courtesy of the Thorned Armor trait Larvitar carried.
With the "Champion" potential inherited from Tyranitar, Larvitar's defenses were off the charts.
Hikaru chuckled awkwardly.
"Is it enjoying this?" he thought, noticing Larvitar's eager expression.
It almost seemed like the Pokémon relished the practice hits.
"Well, at least it'll make a great shield for the team someday!"
---
Above the battlefield, Charizard's white flame-tail burned brightly, its sharp eyes locked onto Greninja below.
Its claws glowed faintly, radiating sharp energy.
Greninja wasn't intimidated, forming its signature Water Shuriken and hurling it upward.
The two attacks collided with an ear-piercing crash.
Both Pokémon staggered back, their energy colliding in a dramatic display.
Greninja quickly recovered and leapt into action, moving at lightning speed and creating dozens, if not hundreds, of shadow clones.
The clones grouped into pairs, each forming a Rasengan in their hands. The resulting energy coalesced into one massive orb, almost 3–4 meters in diameter.
"Ribbit!" Greninja called, the massive orb spinning ominously.
"Roar!" Charizard refused to back down, gathering white-hot flames into its jaws.
It launched a Flamethrower, the cone of fire meeting Greninja's Rasengan head-on.
The resulting clash produced an explosion of steam, filling the room with a dense mist.
But as the fog dissipated, Charizard's expression changed.
The Rasengan emerged unscathed, cutting through the mist like a bullet.
"That Rasengan's piercing power is incredible!" Hikaru thought in awe.
The water-based Rasengan not only negated the fire attack but retained its momentum.
Charizard lunged forward, meeting the attack with a glowing Fire Punch.
Another deafening collision followed.
Both Pokémon reeled from the impact—Charizard from the sheer force of the blow, and Greninja from overexertion.
Charizard's injuries began healing rapidly, thanks to its Life Flame and Quick Recovery traits.
---
On the other side of the room, Lucario had activated its Kaioken mode, red energy surging around its body. It charged at Greninja with a bone staff, moving at incredible speed.
This wasn't just a one-on-one duel.
It was a free-for-all between Charizard, Greninja, and Lucario.
---
Hikaru observed the chaotic battle, deep in thought.
Last time, the three Pokémon had fought with everything they had.
But something was missing.
"Mega Evolution," Hikaru muttered.
The concept was powerful, but it had its limitations. The delay after activation was a critical flaw.
"In an official battle, this delay might be manageable. But in real-world emergencies, it could be fatal."
Hikaru didn't blame his bond with Charizard—it was solid. The issue lay in their lack of practice.
Even with his Aura abilities, Mega Evolution required precision and synchronization.
He recalled Ash's struggles with Greninja's Bond Phenomenon.
It had taken countless battles—and failures—for Ash to master the transformation.
"Practice," Hikaru concluded.
For the coming months, he resolved to focus on improving not only his Pokémon's techniques and power but also their Mega Evolution and bond potential.
Greninja's Bond Phenomenon was another area Hikaru planned to explore.
Having a clear plan of action lifted a weight off his shoulders.

Later, Hikaru checked the Trait Store and found two new trait slots available for purchase.
"Perfect," he muttered, buying them immediately.
As he continued scrolling, something caught his eye.
[Latias's Mega Stone: With a strong enough bond, Latias can achieve Mega Evolution and synchronize perfectly with its trainer. Cost: 3000 Trait Points.]
"Mega Stones for Legendary Pokémon are more expensive than usual," Hikaru noted, checking his balance of 1563 Trait Points.
"At my current rate, I'll have enough in about twenty days."
---
Another item piqued his interest:
[Dual-Defense Energy Cube Recipe (Rock-Type): A formula to create energy cubes that specifically enhance a Rock-type Pokémon's Defense and Special Defense stats over time. Cost: 500 Trait Points.]
Hikaru didn't hesitate to purchase it.
Larvitar, as a pseudo-legendary Pokémon, had a notoriously long growth cycle.
For it to be viable in upcoming battles, Hikaru needed to expedite its growth or enhance its immediate utility.
The National High School League finals featured 6v6 battles, with all participating trainers expected to use their full teams.
This meant each Pokémon had to contribute.
"Entering a battle with just five capable Pokémon is like starting a match a man down," Hikaru thought grimly.
---
Another crash jolted him from his thoughts.
It wasn't from Charizard or Greninja this time.
It was Latias and Gardevoir, engaged in a psychic duel.
For Psychic Pokémon, mental strength was paramount.
While Calm Mind boosted their reserves, sparring sessions like this honed their precision and control.
Latias, as a former Legendary Pokémon, served as Gardevoir's perfect mentor.
---
As the sparring session wrapped up, Hikaru addressed his team.
"Alright, everyone, take a break!" he announced.
While the others relaxed, Hikaru prepared the Dual-Defense Energy Cube for Larvitar.
But as he finished, he noticed Charizard and Greninja still locked in battle.
Their eyes burned with determination, each refusing to concede an inch.
"They're still going…" Hikaru muttered, shaking his head.
It seemed last week's defeat had left a lasting impact.
