Pokémon: Master of the Rain Team

Chapter 121 – Grassy Terrain

"Butterfree, tell them to use Water Gun on the forest!" Reiji shouted to Butterfree, asking it to translate his words.

"Buuuiii! Everyone, use Water Gun on the forest!" Butterfree understood how urgent the situation was—there was no time to explain. The fire was approaching fast. It hurriedly urged the Water-type Pokémon on the sea to act quickly.

"Raaaargh, pwuh!" Gyarados was the first to launch its Water Gun—at full power—blasting a stream of water toward the burning forest.

"Biii-chu!" Seadra followed with its own Water Gun, targeting the wildfire.

The rest of the Water-types followed suit, mimicking their actions, launching a barrage of Water Guns to combat the inferno.

Once the Pokémon had nearly exhausted themselves, and Reiji could feel the moisture thickening in the air, he shouted again to Butterfree: "Butterfree, tell them to use Rain Dance! Hurry, get the rain going!"

"Buuuiii! Rain Dance, Rain Dance—everyone, quick, use Rain Dance!" Butterfree flew over the Water-types again, urgently urging them.

"Gulu gulu!" Tentacool once again followed Butterfree's command, waving its tentacles to perform Rain Dance.

"Heycha!" Staryu stopped using Water Gun and joined in, spinning and summoning rain.

One by one, the other Water-types halted their Water Guns and began chanting their respective Rain Dance cries…

Drip, drip, drip drip—

As the Pokémon began their chanting, dark clouds gathered overhead, and light rain began to fall. The moon was quickly swallowed by thick clouds.

Rumble, rumble—

It wasn't just rain—arcs of blue lightning flickered through the clouds. The drizzle became a downpour, a torrential rainstorm…

"It's raining! It's finally raining! The forest is saved!" Rain splashed across Reiji's face, and he leapt from the sandy shore like an excited child, spinning around and bolting toward the forest.

Now that the rain had come, he had to bring back Poliwhirl. He couldn't let anything happen to that trio.

The Water-types that had successfully summoned the rain hugged one another, cheering in relief, saying things like: "We did it! The fire can finally be stopped!"

Seeing Reiji run off, Butterfree didn't linger either and flew after him. It was equally worried about Poliwhirl and the others in the forest, hoping they were safe.

Its mission, after all, was to protect Reiji. It couldn't allow anything to happen to him.

By now, half of the forest had already burned, but the rain brought new hope—a chance to survive.

The firefighting Pokémon felt the rain on their bodies and stopped their efforts, knowing nature had taken over.

The Pidgey and Spearow who lived in the forest had managed to protect their nests, their chicks, and their eggs.

They were deeply grateful to the three who had given them courage—Poliwhirl and its partners—and to the Water-types at the shore who had summoned the rain, and the human, Reiji, who kept shouting, "Don't give up!"

Beedrill had lost half its territory but managed to protect its hive, honey stores, Weedle larvae, and unhatched eggs. This timely rain had spared them.

The Oddish and Bellsprout families, whose last remaining homes had been surrounded by fire, thought they were doomed. They had waited so long, yet no one had come.

But the final downpour extinguished the flames threatening their last patch of green—their trees, their meadow.

"Hana hana! We're back!" Gloom returned to its home and, seeing the Oddish safe and sound, sighed in relief.

"Dona dona, why'd you come back?" an Oddish asked the Gloom, surprised they had returned after escaping.

"Hana hana, a blue Poliwhirl helped us put out the fire, so we came back," Gloom explained.

"Dona dona, and this rain?" the Oddish asked as they watched the forest blaze being subdued by the storm.

"Hana, a human brought Water-types from the shore to summon the rain. He told us not to give up—and the rain really came," said Gloom, remembering the moment.

"Dona, was it that bad human who stole the Pidgey?" another Oddish stepped forward curiously.

"Hana, no. That human's been at the shore the whole time. He's not the one who took the Pidgey," Gloom clarified.

As the fire waned, the Pokémon began returning to their homes, bringing with them the news: how Poliwhirl had fought the fire, how it had saved them.

How Reiji had led the Water-types to summon the rain and told them not to give up—even when all hope seemed lost.

In the end, the rain had come, the fire was extinguished, and their homes were saved.

Pinsir returned to find its sweet sap trees still standing—its source of nourishment—and told the Pinsir left behind all about what had happened at the shore.

Even Rattata and Ekans, predator and prey, had worked together during the wildfire to fight the flames.

When they returned and saw their offspring unharmed, they too were grateful—for the rain, for the firefighting trio who never gave up and had led them with courage: Poliwhirl, Krabby, and Wingull.

To the south, the fire had been mostly extinguished thanks to Rain Dance.

To the west, the Kingler leader had protected the fruit trees, leading its Krabby tribe to suppress most of the flames.

To the east, the sandstorm summoned by Rhydon had doused much of the fire, leaving only scattered embers.

To the north, Pidgeot carved out a firebreak using Flying-type moves. The felled trees were removed, depriving the fire of fuel, and it died out on its own.

Thanks to the combined efforts of all the Pokémon, the wildfire across the island had shrunk to its final embers. It was nearly wiped out.

Eventually, the heavy rain from the south moved toward the center of the island, soaking the last of the flames.

The forest fire that had raged for hours… was finally over.

…Midnight had fallen. Reiji walked through the charred remains of the forest. All around him were scorched black tree trunks, stripped bare—no leaves, no life. Nothing remained intact.

The blackened trunks looked like brittle crutches, dried into lifeless stumps. Reiji also saw many Pokémon corpses—those that hadn't escaped in time, now reduced to ash.

Everything was scorched earth and gray ash. The forest was silent and dead. The fire had swallowed everything.

"Poliwhirl, Krabby, Wingull—where are you? Answer me! Where are you!?" Reiji shouted, his voice echoing through the desolate woods. He couldn't help but worry—were they still okay?

He still had his most important Pokémon with him—Magikarp, Wishiwashi, and Rhyhorn were all safe inside Poké Balls.

Spinarak and Butterfree were with him. But Poliwhirl and the others were nowhere to be seen.

"Butterfree, do you see any trace of the three?"

"Buuuiii…" Butterfree shook its head helplessly. It hadn't seen the three Pokémon, nor could it catch their scent.

The overwhelming smell of burnt wood choked the air, and even though rain still fell, it rendered Butterfree's sense of smell useless.

"Poliwhirl, Krabby, Wingull—where are you!?" Reiji called out louder as he pushed deeper into the forest, his worry increasing with every step.

With the constant rain and the dark forest at night, the lack of response from the trio made finding them nearly impossible.

And don't forget—there was still a dangerous hunter lurking somewhere in the woods.

But Reiji didn't care. He just wanted to find the three. Afraid they couldn't hear him, he kept calling their names, walking deeper and shouting louder—until a Pokémon appeared and blocked his path.

"Dona dona," an Oddish stepped forward, responding to his voice.

"Butterfree, what's it saying?" Reiji wanted to brush the Oddish aside. He was in no mood for distractions and couldn't understand it.

"Buuuiii? You said… you know where Poliwhirl is?" Butterfree's expression lit up with hope. Finally, a lead.

"Dona dona, follow me," Oddish nodded, turning to lead the way.

Butterfree flew back and nodded rapidly to Reiji, letting out a cheerful cry.

"They found Poliwhirl?" Reiji asked instinctively.

"Buuuiii!" Butterfree nodded and followed Oddish.

Relieved, Reiji smiled and quickly followed them both.

Ten minutes later, the group arrived at a patch of forest untouched by the fire—lush grass still growing, and a small forest lake about ten meters across.

The lake wasn't anything special—just a widening in a forest stream—but the grass around it moved gently despite no wind and glowed with faint green light.

Reiji froze when he saw it. He muttered, "This is… Grassy Terrain…"

A circle of Oddish danced around the glowing field, and in the center lay Poliwhirl, Krabby, and Wingull.

All three were unconscious, each with varying degrees of burn injuries.

Poliwhirl's skin was blackened, swollen with blisters and peeling.

Krabby looked like it had been cooked—the entire shell bright red.

Wingull had lost many feathers to the fire and looked almost plucked.

Seeing them in such a state, Reiji instinctively stepped forward to check their wounds, but Oddish blocked his way.

"Dona dona," the Oddish called, stopping him.

"What?" Reiji was anxious, but he didn't force his way through. Instead, he turned to Butterfree.

"Buuuiii," Butterfree flew to him and shook its head, signaling him to stay back.

So Reiji stopped, even taking a few steps back to watch and see what the Oddish intended to do.

More and more Grass-type Pokémon began to join—Gloom, Bellsprout, Weepinbell…

Even Pidgey, Spearow, Pinsir, Weedle, Caterpie, Rattata, and Ekans showed up. Every wild Pokémon in the forest had come.

They didn't just come to watch—they brought injured Pokémon with them: scorched, burned, wounded. Each was gently laid behind the Oddish circle and left in silence.

But none of them left. They stood in trees, crouched in bushes, or gathered quietly on the ground around the Grassy Terrain, watching both the Grass-types and Reiji.

They had all heard it was this human who summoned the rain to put out the fire. Though they hated the one who set the forest ablaze, they didn't hate the one who helped them.

Their hatred was for the human thief who stole Pidgeot's child, who torched the forest. Not Reiji.

As more Grass-types joined, the Grassy Terrain grew—spreading from the Oddish circle toward Reiji's feet…

Then past him, expanding beneath every wild Pokémon's feet.

Wherever the Grassy Terrain passed, plants began to revive. Trees untouched by fire became vibrant again, full of life.

The wild Pokémon bathed in the glow felt their pain and exhaustion melt away. Anger faded. Peace returned.

Even Reiji felt it—his sweat-drenched, aching body relaxed. His mind calmed. The worry, the stress, the fury—all washed away. He felt peace.

But that wasn't the most miraculous part.

Scorched tree branches sprouted new buds. Grass covered the bare earth. The surviving fruit trees bore fresh fruit.

Seeing the forest revive, Reiji stood frozen, a flicker of awe in his eyes. He looked like a statue—dumbfounded.

The full moon overhead, the glowing green field—this moment was magical. A sight he'd never forget.

…Suddenly, a faint voice broke the silence.

"Yo… bo…"

The voice was weak, almost inaudible—but to Reiji, it was unmistakable.

"Poliwhirl!" He rushed forward, but again, Oddish and Gloom blocked his path.

"Dona dona," they gently urged him to wait.

He clenched his fists, wanting to scream—but held back.

The Grassy Terrain continued to glow. The Pokémon didn't chant, didn't shout—they simply stood together in silence, sharing the field's energy.

Bit by bit, Krabby's scorched shell regained its original dull red, the blistering heat receding.

Wingull's frail form relaxed, breathing steadier.

Poliwhirl's blackened skin stopped peeling, replaced slowly by healthier flesh.

Reiji couldn't take it anymore. "Poliwhirl! Wingull! Krabby!" he shouted.

"Yo… bo…" Poliwhirl responded again, just a bit louder.

Then Wingull opened its eyes and let out a soft cry.

Krabby twitched its claw.

"Yo bo!" Poliwhirl called out again. This time loud. Clear.

Alive.

Reiji fell to his knees, buried his face in his hands, and trembled.

He didn't cry—but his body shook with the release of overwhelming tension.

He had prepared for the worst. And instead… he saw a miracle.

Butterfree landed beside him, gently resting a wing on his shoulder.

The Pokémon around them didn't move. They simply watched, solemn and calm, as the Grassy Terrain pulsed under the moonlight.

The fire had taken much—but it had not taken everything.

The island still lived. The forest still stood. And the three who charged into the blaze… had survived.

Even a disaster like this—couldn't destroy the bonds they had built.

And even the wildest, fiercest Pokémon… could show gratitude.

Even trust.

Reiji exhaled, deeply.

"Thank you," he whispered. Not to any one Pokémon—but to all of them.

To the forest. To the ones who fought. To the ones who stayed.

He didn't say another word. He didn't need to.

This was enough.
