"The owner of the Water City Gym was a little confused when she received the call from the front desk.
This was the first time she had encountered such a thing.
Only a Pokémon had come to challenge the gym? The Trainer didn't show up?
How absurd.
"I'll be right over," she said. "You guys wait a minute."
Hanging up the phone, she rushed out of her office.
The front desk staff sighed in relief after the call ended. Turning to the Gallade standing in front of them, one of them said, "Our leader will be here soon. Please wait for a moment."
"This is the first time we've encountered something like this," the other added. "We thought it would be best to let the leader decide."
Hearing this, Gallade gave a polite nod and stood silently to the side.
The two front desk workers exchanged glances, their curiosity piqued.
What kind of Trainer sends their Pokémon to challenge a gym alone?
Gallade looked impressive, carrying a small satchel like a traveler. The thought amused them.
"Do you think its Trainer is a girl?" one whispered.
"Could be," the other replied. "It's such a stylish Pokémon."
Their minds raced with speculation. What kind of person would come up with such a bizarre idea? They had worked here for years but had never seen anything like this.
After a few minutes, the gym leader appeared. She paused briefly upon seeing Gallade, noting its poised stance and traveler-like bag.
The sight made her lips twitch. Was it on an adventure?
But her casual observations vanished as soon as she sensed its aura. Her eyes widened.
A Champion-level Pokémon?
The realization made her instantly serious. Was this Gallade the partner of a highly skilled Trainer?
"Hello," she greeted. "I'm Madison, the Water Gym Leader of Water City."
Gallade turned to her, its gaze calm and focused. Using telepathy, it replied, "Hello. I am here to challenge the gym on behalf of my Trainer. Could you please help me register?"
The directness of its statement left Madison momentarily stunned, but she quickly regained her composure.
"Although I've never encountered a situation like this," she began, "the League doesn't have any rules stating a Pokémon can't challenge a gym without its Trainer present. So, I accept."
She studied Gallade, her curiosity growing. Would it command another Pokémon in battle? Or would it fight alone?
Gallade nodded in acknowledgment, handing an identification card to the receptionist. The staff quickly entered the Trainer's name—Evan—into the League system and returned the card.
As they completed the process, they exchanged glances again.
A rookie Trainer?
Though Evan had received their Trainer's license a while ago, it seemed they'd only recently graduated. Could someone like that really own a Champion-level Pokémon?
Madison brushed aside the speculations. "Please, follow me," she instructed Gallade.
She led the way to the gym's main battleground, a large swimming pool with floating platforms scattered across its surface.
Gallade followed closely, taking in the surroundings. The pool, with its petite platforms, clearly catered to smaller, more agile Pokémon. Large Pokémon would have no room to maneuver here.
As they reached the edge of the pool, Madison glanced at Gallade again, her mind already strategizing. It was an unusual situation, but the challenge would proceed as any other.
Gallade stood silently, observing the gym battlefield without much concern. It had faith in Pikachu's ability to handle the situation.
Madison took a moment to explain the rules, her tone professional.
"The officiating here is automated," she said. "The entire battle will also be recorded."
She glanced at Gallade and continued, "Since this is your Trainer's first gym challenge, the Pokémon I'll use won't be too strong. The format is a 3v3 gym battle. Win two matches, and you'll earn a Gym Badge. If you have any objections, feel free to raise them now."
Gallade shook his head in response. It had no objections.
"Let's start," it said simply, taking a Poké Ball from its satchel.
Madison nodded. "Alright, then. Let me send out my first Pokémon."
She tossed a Poké Ball into the air.
"Go, Goldeen!"
With a burst of light and a splash, a Goldeen—larger than average—emerged gracefully into the pool.
Gallade didn't hesitate. It immediately threw Pikachu's Poké Ball and spoke telepathically to its partner.
"Shock it."
The Poké Ball opened, and Pikachu emerged, landing firmly on one of the floating boards.
"Pikaaa!" Pikachu cried, its cheeks sparking with electricity, ready for battle.
The golden light of Pikachu's Thunderbolt began to flash as it prepared its first move. Its strength had grown significantly since it had been caught as a newborn. With careful training from Gardevoir and a healthy lifestyle under Evan's care, it had reached an advanced level, just shy of elite strength.
Madison observed the Electric-type Pokémon. She frowned slightly.
"An Electric-type, huh? That's going to be trouble…" she muttered, realizing the disadvantage of her water-based arena.
Still, she maintained her composure. "You can take the first move," she offered.
Gallade glanced at Pikachu, and no further command was needed. Pikachu immediately acted.
"Pika…CHU!"
A bolt of golden lightning surged into the pool, its electric currents spreading rapidly through the water.
The arena was instantly electrified.
"Boom!"
The shockwave engulfed the pool, leaving Goldeen no chance to dodge. The Water-type flailed briefly before succumbing to the overwhelming attack, fainting on the spot.
Madison's face twitched in frustration. She knew it—this swimming pool setup was her greatest vulnerability against Electric-types. The battle had barely started, and she'd already lost the first round.
Sighing, she withdrew her fainted Goldeen. "You did well," she murmured, returning it to its Poké Ball.
Without missing a beat, she threw out another Poké Ball.
"Go, Cloyster! Freeze Ray!"
A Cloyster materialized from the ball, its spiked shell glinting in the light. The Pokémon immediately launched an Ice Beam, a piercing ray of cold blue energy aimed directly at Pikachu.
The attack came fast, but Pikachu was faster. It leaped gracefully from one floating board to another, evading the beam with ease.
"Pika!" Pikachu countered with another surge of electricity, this time aimed directly at Cloyster.
