Chapter 131: Chapter 131: Caitlin’s “Coincidental Encounter”
Under Sasha and Erika's bewildered gazes, the pink flash in the arena vanished without a trace.
Charizard lay limply on the ground, its eyes filled with disbelief as it looked at Gardevoir.
A one-hit KO on a type-resistant Pokémon. After having its Special Attack lowered by one stage? Sure, they understood every individual word of that sentence.
But when put together, how the hell did it sound like some kind of international joke?
"Gym Leader Sasha, the battle's not over yet. Want to bring out your Incineroar for another round?", Axel looked at her eagerly.
But Sasha firmly shook her head.
She could give up being one of the Elite Eight—but she absolutely could not let Axel have the satisfaction.
"Nope, I surrender!"
———
A few minutes later, Axel walked out of the gym, quietly reflecting on how fragile the gym leader was.
'That was it? Just a couple of hits and she gave up?'
'With skills like that, she is way worse than Brock from Kanto.'
Sure, Brock was kind of weak too, but at least the guy had rock-solid willpower.
After sighing a bit, Axel summoned Gyarados again, planning to ride it to the train station.
This time, since his trip to Ninox and would pass through several secret realms, riding Gyarados or Ho-Oh would easily attract a commotion.
So this time, he planned to take the high-speed rail to school.
"Gyarados, let's head to the station."
"Wait! I have something I must tell you!", Erika came running out of the gym, panting, and stopped beside Axel.
"There were other people around just now, so I couldn't speak freely. Thankfully, I caught up to you."
"What's the matter, Gym Leader Erika?"
Axel had a good impression of her.
This girl might not have been strong, but she had a great sense of responsibility. She was the kind of gym leader who deserved respect.
"I came to thank you for defeating Team Rocket… and also, to extend an invitation."
"I'm currently hosting a lecture series at Ninox University. Would you be willing to guest lecture a class?"
"Me? Lecture?", Axel pointed at his own nose and shook his head like crazy.
'No way. Absolutely not.'
Sometimes even he got scared thinking about the stuff that came out of his own head, how could he teach other people?
He'd probably make the gym leaders in Ninox cry.
"You're not interested?", Erika's tone didn't change, still as gentle as a spring breeze.
"If that's the case, then forget it. Powerful trainers like you rarely ever teach anyway."
'Yes, yes, yes!'
Axel's fondness for Erika skyrocketed.
'Finally, someone who didn't say I am corrupting the youth.'
After saying goodbye to Erika, Axel had Gyarados take off and soon arrived at the high-speed rail station southeast of Emberpine City.
Thanks to using a Pokémon for transport, this particular train station was unusually quiet. The only highlight was the music fountain that played like clockwork every Wednesday and Saturday.
Maybe because school was about to start, the station had way more people than usual today. Everywhere you looked were high school graduates about to enter university.
"Wahaha, I can finally travel! I wonder if college life's gonna be good!"
"You mean, is life good, or are the senpai good?"
Conversations like these echoed all around.
Hearing them, Axel chuckled as he squeezed past the crowd.
He didn't know if the senpai were good, but Erika had just mentioned that freshmen would be facing upperclassmen in training battles.
Once that starts, unless you've got a masochistic streak, you probably won't be saying anything about senpai being "good."
One thing that did surprise Axel, though, was that the station had no security check.
But the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. Trainers could casually pull out massive creatures like Charizard or Onix at any time. What was the point of checking for concealed weapons?
In this world, unless every train came with a full team of Officer Jennys, there was no real way to prevent crime anyway.
After the ticket check, Axel found his seat and sat down quietly.
He'd bought a regular second-class ticket, the kind with five seats per row.
For some reason, this carriage was completely empty except for a crew member. Not a single other passenger in sight.
Noticing the small folding table in front of him, Axel pulled out his Rotom Phone and launched a game called Pokémon Showdown.
It was kinda similar to the Pokémon games from his previous world, but the story was way worse.
It told the tale of a hero leaving his kingdom to rescue a princess kidnapped by the ice dragon Kyurem.
Axel couldn't help but roll his eyes.
These developers were seriously just bullying Kyurem for not having shown up in real life yet. If that cold-blooded dragon did see this game, it would probably tear the entire Unova region to shreds.
Since the story was too ridiculous, Axel just paid 20 bucks to skip it and jump into battle mode.
First Pokémon: Mew, go—
A robotic female voice came from the Rotom Phone:
[You have not unlocked this Pokémon. Please recharge 66,666 to unlock Mew.]
"The hell?", Axel cursed and went to close the game.
Recharge? Yeah, right.
Not even 20 bucks more, let alone 60 grand.
Just then, a golden card slid across the side of his Rotom Phone, glowing faintly.
[Recharge complete. You have unlocked the mythical Pokémon: Mew.]
Seeing that familiar white dress and black high heels, Axel stiffened.
'Why the hell is she showing up even here?'
"What do you want?", he asked warily, looking at Caitlin like she was about to steal his virtue.
A hint of blush crossed Caitlin's porcelain face, and she replied as gently as she could, "Our family car broke down earlier, so I had to take the high-speed rail this time."
Axel still didn't believe her, "But last time when you dropped off that pig-faced girl, you had over thirty cars with you."
Caitlin said calmly, "All thirty-plus cars broke down."
"Then why not just book a first-class seat?"
"The entire first-class car was taken up by my bodyguards. No room for me."
Axel: "..."
'That is the most bullshit reason I've ever heard.'
"Your bodyguards are in first class, and you came here to squeeze into second?", He pointed to the seat beside him, "Do I look like an idiot to you?"
"Thanks, I'll take this seat, then."
Axel: "..."
'Girl, I was questioning you, not offering you a seat!'
Sensing his inner thoughts, Caitlin tilted her head and looked at him.
"But... I saw on TV that when guys act like this, they always let the girl sit next to them."
"So what, if I patted my thigh, would you sit on that too?"
Caitlin tilted her head in thought for a moment, and plopped herself right onto Axel's lap.
"Sure!" [T/N: You know what, I like this girl.]
Axel: "..."
'Girl, your brain's definitely a little off, but seriously. I'm not your damn therapist.'
