Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Combusken, the Ultimate Speedster!
Pokémon: Onix
Type: Rock/Ground
Ability: Rock Head
Gender: Male
Level: Normal Level
Condition: Healthy (No Status Effects)
Nero gazed up at the towering Onix, nearly ten meters tall, his brow furrowing slightly.
His opponent, Arran, wore a confident smirk.
Onix, a Rock/Ground-type Pokémon, had the upper hand against Combusken's Fire-type moves. However, Combusken's Fighting-type moves were super-effective against Rock. The problem was that Onix was a Pokémon renowned for its formidable defense, while all of Combusken's Fighting-type attacks were physical moves.
From a pure type perspective, Combusken was at a disadvantage. That was why Arran was so self-assured.
"Let the battle begin!"
The referee waved the flag.
"Onix, strike first! Use Bind!"
"ROAAAR!!"
Onix let out a deafening roar, its massive, rock-segmented body slithering toward Combusken with overwhelming momentum. Its sheer size and presence were imposing.
As Onix closed in, ready to ensnare Combusken within its rocky coils, Combusken suddenly leapt high into the air, narrowly escaping the attack.
Landing gracefully, Combusken maintained a safe distance, and its legs gleamed with a faint azure glow.
Speed Boost activated!
"Not bad... But Onix, use Rock Tomb!" Arran commanded.
In his mind, the battle was already won. The only challenge was Combusken's agility, but that could be dealt with. Fire-types were typically explosive attackers, whereas Rock-types excelled in endurance. The longer the fight dragged on, the more Combusken's stamina would deplete. Once it was exhausted, a single Tackle from Onix would be enough to secure victory.
"ROOAAARRR!!!"
Onix let out a furious cry, its eyes glowing blue as the ground trembled violently beneath them.
"The rock pillars will rise from below."
Nero had watched the Pokémon Advanced anime. He remembered that when Ash faced Roxanne in his first Gym battle, Nosepass's Rock Tomb gave Pikachu a tough time.
Combusken understood instantly.
The ground beneath Combusken began to shift—Rock Tomb was coming!
Reacting swiftly, Combusken executed a flawless 360-degree backflip!
As it landed gracefully, jagged rock spires erupted from where it had just stood, their thunderous impact echoing across the battlefield. But Combusken had evaded the attack entirely!
"Chamo!"
"Onix, keep using Rock Tomb! Don't let Combusken escape!" Arran ordered.
He refused to believe that Combusken could dodge Onix's attacks indefinitely.
Once more, Onix roared as rock pillars surged from the ground. But each time, Combusken nimbly evaded them with a well-timed backflip.
"How is it always just barely missing?!"
Arran gritted his teeth, his expression growing more frustrated. "Onix, use Rock Slide!"
Having repeatedly used Rock Tomb, Onix was beginning to tire, but it still mustered the strength to launch Rock Slide.
High above Combusken, rippling blue energy formed in the air, followed by an avalanche of irregularly shaped boulders raining down.
"Bounce," Nero said, adjusting his glasses.
"Chaamo!"
Combusken didn't flinch at the sight of the incoming rocks. Instead, it bent its legs and leaped skyward!
Against the backdrop of the battlefield, its fiery orange-red form burned brightly in the air.
Combusken's legs shimmered with white energy. Using the airborne rocks as stepping stones, it rapidly advanced toward Onix, each powerful kick propelling it forward.
As it reached a position directly above Onix, Combusken dove downward.
Before Onix could react, Combusken's glowing leg struck its head—twice!
Double Kick—super effective!
Combusken landed smoothly, executing a stylish mid-air spin before touching the ground.
"That chicken is absurdly fast... I wish I had one," murmured an older spectator, sighing with admiration.
"That young Trainer is no ordinary kid."
"Indeed, both he and his Pokémon are incredibly skilled. He has a bright future ahead."
In the stands, several seasoned Trainers engaged in discussion. They had watched many Pokémon battles, but it was rare to see a young Trainer like Nero remain so composed under pressure.
Most rookies would panic when faced with such widespread area-of-effect attacks.
But Nero not only stayed calm—he turned Onix's Rock Slide against it. By using the falling rocks as platforms, he allowed gravity to amplify Combusken's attack. Even Onix, with its rock-solid defenses, couldn't escape serious damage.
"Time to end this match." Nero watched as Onix struggled back to its feet. "Low Kick."
"Chaamo!"
Combusken dashed forward, faster than ever. Its legs, now enveloped in Speed Boost's azure glow, propelled it forward with blinding speed.
To the audience, it was as if a streak of fiery red flashed across the field. In an instant, Combusken was already in front of Onix.
Its right leg ignited in a dazzling white blaze as it delivered a devastating kick to Onix's lower body!
Low Kick—deals more damage based on the opponent's weight!
A colossal Pokémon like Onix stood no chance.
"ROOOOOAAARR..."
Pain surged through Onix's massive body. Unable to withstand the blow, it collapsed with a thunderous crash, shaking the battlefield.
"Onix is unable to battle! Combusken wins!"
As the battle concluded, the crowd erupted into applause.
Among them, Arran silently recalled Onix, his figure retreating into the distance—a defeated shadow.
From Nero's perspective, Arran's loss was entirely fair.
He had underestimated Combusken just because he had a type advantage.
A fatal mistake for any Trainer.
A true Trainer, when battling an opponent of similar level, should never take any fight lightly.
For example, if Nero's next opponent was a Bug Catcher with only a Caterpie...
The moment the battle started—
Nero wouldn't hesitate.
He'd command Combusken to unleash Fire Spin + Flamethrower for an instant fiery barrage!
Because, after all...
You never know with a Caterpie.
What if, in the blink of an eye, it suddenly evolved into Rayquaza and used Dragon Ascent?
Then it would be game over!
