Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Giga Drain and Hidden Power
"Charmander, continue using Dragon Rage."
Unfazed by Mightyena's zigzag movement pattern, Kalia recognized these tactics but hadn't yet taught them to Charmander or Treecko.
In reality, zigzagging may increase evasion, but it also prolongs the time needed to approach the opponent. Against slow Pokemon, it might be effective, but facing high-speed opponents skilled in ranged moves, evading is crucial; failing to do so could prove costly.
Moreover, the zigzag technique has a significant flaw: Pokemon tend to move towards the center, making it easy for opponents to aim at that point, causing their Pokemon to inadvertently collide with the attack.
The blue-capped Trainer and Kalia had vastly different perspectives. While the blue-capped Trainer understood some techniques and preferred unconventional training methods, neither Yanma nor Mightyena possessed exceptional potential. Yanma could evolve into Yanmega given specific conditions, but Mightyena was relatively limited.
To progress further in the future, he would have to abandon Mightyena and invest time in training a new Pokemon, resulting in wasted effort and resources.
Of course, continuing to train Mightyena was possible, but as its final evolution form, its growth potential had reached its peak. Any further development would solely rely on continuous battle experience.
The species difference limited Mightyena's ultimate potential. Compared to nurturing Pokémon like Charmander or Treecko, it would take significantly more time and effort to achieve a comparable level with Mightyena.
Upon receiving Kalia's command, Lian resumed his sprint. Once enough distance was created, he swiftly unleashed Dragon Rage again.
This time, Mightyena couldn't dodge; its initial evasion had been sheer luck. However, Lian wasn't an ordinary Charmander, and allowing Mightyena to avoid Dragon Rage twice would have been too embarrassing.
Although Mightyena didn't fully endure the shockwave from Dragon Rage, even being hit partially sent it flying, crashing hard onto the ground. Combined with the injuries sustained earlier from Fury Cutter, Mightyena struggled momentarily but ultimately succumbed to its severe wounds, unable to continue fighting.
In Pokémon battles, there is a limit to a Pokémon's injuries, represented by the System's Stamina value. When Stamina reaches zero, although the Pokémon isn't at risk of death, they can no longer continue battling. If further damage were inflicted at this point, it could become life-threatening. Therefore, once a Pokémon loses its ability to fight, Trainers typically recall them into their Poké Balls and bring them to the Pokémon Center for treatment.
With Mightyena incapacitated, the blue-capped Trainer only had Yanma left, which possessed only one move—Sonic Boom. Facing Lian, Yanma stood no chance and eventually fell as well.
As a result, Kalia emerged victorious.

After treating Grovyle's injuries, Kalia temporarily returned to her hotel room. Now that Treecko had evolved into Grovyle, it was time for them to participate in the Extreme Speed Conference and challenge the gym.
In the evening, Kalia retrieved several Move Disks from her backpack, which were left by her father. These disks would be perfect for Grovyle and Charmander to learn new moves.
Kalia selected two Move Disks—one for Grovyle and one for Charmander. Initially, she planned to wait until Charmander evolved, but since Grovyle had already advanced, Charmander's evolution should be imminent as well, making it beneficial to start learning early.
The first Move Disk contained Giga Drain. Compared to Mega Drain, Giga Drain is significantly more powerful. Normally, Grovyle would find it challenging to master Giga Drain without exceptional talent.
This particular Giga Drain Move Disk belonged to her father's Sceptile after its training, influencing Kalia's choice of starting with Treecko.
Apart from her familiarity with Grass-type Pokémon, which made their development easier, the most crucial factor was the collection of Grass-type Move Disks inherited from her father. These disks allowed Grovyle to quickly learn potent Grass-type moves.
The second Move Disk contained Hidden Power. Initially, Kalia had planned to teach Charmander Metal Claw, a Steel-type move. However, despite Metal Claw being effective against Rock and Ground types, it wasn't ideal for Charmander, who excels at Special moves.
Hidden Power is a Normal-type move with a unique characteristic: depending on the individual Pokémon, it can manifest as a move of various attributes.
For instance, a Grass-type Pokémon might unleash a Fire-type Hidden Power, or a Water-type Pokémon could release a Fire-type Hidden Power; it entirely depends on luck.
Her father's Sceptile possessed a Rock-type Hidden Power, making it incredibly formidable. Even when facing Bug or Flying-type Pokémon, it showed no fear whatsoever.
If Charmander gets lucky and awakens a Grass-type or Steel-type Hidden Power, it would similarly become fearless against Rock, Ground-types, and even Water-type Pokémon in the future.
Since the Pokemon Hotel has disk players available, Kalia opted not to visit the Pokémon Center. After all, these were her personal Move Disks, so there was no need to involve the center.
Lian curiously watched as Kalia produced a Move Disk from her bag. He was already aware of its existence since he often rummaged through her backpack and had seen it multiple times.
His anticipation grew - what kind of move would it be? While Lian didn't expect it to be an incredibly powerful Fire-type move, he hoped it wouldn't turn out to be something completely useless either.
Kalia started by playing the Giga Drain Move Disk, but Lian quickly lost interest, realizing it was clearly intended for Grovyle's training.
After reviewing Giga Drain several times, Kalia began playing the Hidden Power Move Disk, finally piquing Lian's curiosity.
Although not being a Fire-type move was slightly disappointing, he understood that these Move Disks weren't specifically prepared for him; Kalia had them long before. It was normal not to find any Fire-type moves among them.
Similar to Swift, Hidden Power is a Normal-type Special Attack move. However, when each Pokémon learns Hidden Power, they awaken with different elemental strengths.
The uniqueness of Hidden Power lies in the fact that every Pokémon releases it differently, which intrigued Lian, prompting him to pay close attention.
In the demonstration video, Smeargle unleashed the most basic Hidden Power, emitting white energy primarily focused on showcasing its release process and details.
Since the System allowed him to quickly learn new moves, Lian paid extra attention, hoping he might unlock Hidden Power tonight.
Grovyle didn't continue watching Hidden Power demonstrations. After reviewing Giga Drain several times, Kalia had it start practicing. It's better not to overwhelm with too much at once; attempting two moves simultaneously could backfire, potentially leading to learning neither effectively.
Lian watched the Hidden Power demo multiple times before also beginning his practice. With the System's aid, just a short training session should suffice for unlocking it by evening.
Unlike Swift, which is exclusive to certain Pokemon, Hidden Power can be learned by almost any Pokemon, making it accessible with a low threshold. Lian was confident he wouldn't have trouble mastering it.
If he could awaken a Grass-Type Hidden Power, Lian would likely wake up grinning even in his dreams. However, this relies entirely on luck, as no one can predict what type of attribute power will emerge.
