Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Pewter's Rocks
Pewter City rose from the landscape like a geological marvel, its buildings crafted from sturdy grey stone, nestled amongst impressive rock formations. The air here was cooler, carrying the faint, earthy scent of granite and minerals, a delightful change from the forest's piney breath. Touma strode confidently into the city, his eyes scanning for the familiar red roof of the Pokémon Center.
Upon entering, he was met with the comforting, low hum of activity – the chirps of Pokémon, the quiet murmurs of trainers, and the gentle clinking of Nurse Joy's equipment. He approached the desk with a polite smile, handing over Vulpix, Pidgey, and Poliwag's Poké Balls to the local Nurse Joy, who looked remarkably similar to her Viridian City counterpart, just with perhaps a slightly firmer handshake. "Hello, Nurse Joy. My Pokémon could use a good rest, please."
"Certainly, professor Touma," she replied with a wink, her smile professional and warm. "They'll be ready for you by morning."
With his team in safe hands, Touma made his way to the private section of the Pokémon Center – his reserved Professor's Room. Ah, the perks of being a prodigy! The room was spacious, equipped not just with a comfortable bed, but a dedicated research terminal. He immediately powered it on, his fingers itching to share his latest thoughts.
He decided to delve into the fascinating topic of Pokémon Natures. He meticulously detailed his initial observations of his own Pokémon, postulating how a Pokémon's inherent Nature might subtly influence its training responsiveness and battle aptitude, using Vulpix's Timid quickness, Pidgey's Jolly agility, and Poliwag's Modest special attack potential as prime examples. He speculated on the interplay between innate nature and dedicated training, crafting a compelling argument for how a skilled trainer could truly bring out the best in any Pokémon, regardless of its starting disposition. He posted it to his esteemed professor forum.
It didn't take long. His notifications practically exploded! The comments section filled up rapidly with a mix of awe, debate, and fervent agreement. "Brilliant, Professor Touma!" "Such keen insight!" "Revolutionary thinking!" Touma scrolled through, a faint, pleased smile on his lips. It was always gratifying to share his discoveries and spark such lively intellectual discourse.
After a productive evening of research and a good night's rest, Touma awoke feeling invigorated. He collected his three fully revitalized Pokémon from Nurse Joy, their Poké Balls practically humming with renewed energy. "Alright, team," he murmured, giving each a gentle tap, "time to see Pewter City!"
He stepped out into the crisp morning air, taking in the sights. The city had a rugged charm, with quaint stone houses and shops interspersed with impressive rock gardens. Touma browsed a few stores, his keen eye already scanning for useful items. He found a well-stocked Poké Mart and decided it was high time to upgrade his team's move sets.
He carefully selected three suitable TMs. For Vulpix, he chose Dig (TM28), thinking of its utility for evasion and surprising ground attacks against future Electric or Rock types. For Pidgey, he picked Roost (TM19), knowing that reliable recovery would be invaluable in longer battles. And for Poliwag, he settled on Ice Beam (TM13), a powerful special attack that would give him coverage against Grass-types, which his Water-type was normally weak against. He also stocked up on a healthy supply of Potions and a variety of nourishing berries for his Pokémon, along with some dry rations for himself – because even a brilliant professor needs to eat!
Back in a quieter corner of the Pokémon Center courtyard, Touma carefully took out the TMs. This was the magic of modern Pokémon training! He held each TM near the respective Poké Ball. A soft, almost ethereal glow emanated from the TMs, absorbing into the Poké Balls, and then a distinct ping confirmed the new move had been learned. He imagined his Pokémon inside, feeling the rush of new knowledge.
"Alright, everyone," Touma announced, releasing Vulpix, Pidgey, and Poliwag. "New moves acquired! Now, let's go put them to the test!"
He led them to the outskirts of Pewter City, where the terrain transitioned into a rough, rocky landscape. This was prime territory for wild Rock-type Pokémon, perfect for testing his team's new skills. The air hummed with anticipation, and Touma's strategic mind was already buzzing with battle plans. He needed to prepare his team for the challenges that awaited them, particularly the formidable Pewter Gym Leader, Brock.
He started with Vulpix. "Vulpix, let's practice Dig! Focus your energy and burrow swiftly, then burst out with precision!" Vulpix barked with determination, quickly disappearing into the earth and emerging with surprising speed, kicking up dust and small pebbles. She repeated the exercise, her movements becoming smoother and more controlled with each attempt.
Next, Pidgey. "Pidgey, it's time to master Roost! When you feel tired, concentrate, and feel the energy flow back into you, healing your wings!" Pidgey perched on a nearby rock, closing its eyes and focusing. A soft, green glow enveloped it, and Touma could see its feathers perk up, a renewed vigor returning to its tiny frame. It practiced several times, perfecting the art of quick recovery.
Finally, Poliwag. "Poliwag, your Ice Beam needs to be sharp and precise! Imagine the coldest energy, gather it, and unleash it in a focused blast!" Poliwag concentrated, and a shimmering, icy blue beam shot from its mouth, freezing a small patch of ground solid. It took a few tries to control the power and aim, but soon, the beams were piercing and accurate, leaving trails of frost wherever they struck.
They trained diligently, Touma offering constant encouragement and adjustments, until each Pokémon had a firm grasp of their new abilities. Their eyes gleamed with exhaustion and satisfaction, knowing they were stronger than ever.
After hours of battling and training, Touma and his Pokemon went back to the Pokemon center to take a rest, Touma checked his system to see if there anything he can do and found a unclaimed reward.

A sleek, black and purple Poké Ball, emblazoned with a prominent 'M', materialized in his inventory. Touma's eyes widened slightly in surprise, a faint, pleased smirk gracing his lips. A Master Ball!
