Chapter 91: Chapter 91: The Fighting Dojo
"I finally finished. Who would've thought that teaching my Pokémon moves from TMs would take so much time?"
Ron muttered those self-deprecating words, only to realize that people around him were starting to look at him differently.
Clearing his throat, Ron quickly made his way out of the Pokémon Center and headed towards the Fighting Dojo—not because he was afraid of those stares, of course.
With the TMs he'd earned, Ron's Pokémon had undergone a full-scale power-up.
In particular, Machamp and Nidorino had benefited the most. Machamp mastered the trio of elemental punches—Fire Punch, Ice Punch, and Thunder Punch—which greatly increased its offensive versatility.
Meanwhile, Nidorino had learned Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam, building a solid foundation for eventually mastering their advanced versions—Thunder, Fire Blast, and Blizzard.
Purchasing these TMs had also reduced Ron's contribution points to 98,000, just shy of keeping the critical 100,000 threshold intact.
As for the Life Orb he'd redeemed, Ron hadn't given it to his Nidorino, which still had the Hustle ability. He planned to wait until Nidorino evolved into Nidoking, when the orb's full potential could be unleashed.
Even though this Life Orb, which cost 50,000 points, wouldn't help Nidoking reach the Elite Four level of strength, that kind of power was still far off for Ron.
Ron firmly believed that by the time Nidoking grew to Elite Four tier, he would undoubtedly find a Life Orb worthy of such strength.
However, Ron's moment of satisfaction didn't last long before he sensed someone watching him. His expression darkened.
He despised this feeling of being monitored to his core.
If the opponent's strength had been overwhelming, Ron might have reluctantly accepted the situation. But in this case, he didn't think they could match him.
Given that they were still in the city, Ron decided to endure it for now. He planned to deal with the issue after visiting the Fighting Dojo.
If someone dared follow him out of Saffron City, though, they'd better hope their strength was up to the task. Otherwise, the forest would be their final resting place.
Since the Fighting Dojo had lost its battle against Sabrina's Saffron City Gym in the Gym Wars, it had declined to the point of being pushed to the outskirts of the city.
After a good deal of searching, Ron finally located the Fighting Dojo.
Standing at its somewhat run-down entrance, Ron hesitated but decided to check it out. Who knows? There might still be a pleasant surprise.
"Hello? Anyone here?"
As soon as Ron pushed the dojo's door open, he was greeted by an unexpectedly passionate scene.
Two burly men were wrestling shirtless in the middle of the dojo, surrounded by a cheering crowd of equally muscular men.
"…Sorry to interrupt."
Without hesitation, Ron turned to leave.
"Hey, don't go just yet, young man!"
A voice called out behind Ron. His instincts immediately screamed danger, and his hand subconsciously tightened around the Poké Ball at his waist.
In a flash, a towering man wearing a martial arts gi and a red headband appeared in front of him. The man had a small beard under his chin and an unmistakable air of strength.
[TL/N: Martial arts gi is a traditional uniform worn in various martial arts.]
Rifling through his memories, Ron quickly identified the man: Karate Master Kiyo. In the games, he was the only one with this prestigious title, a testament to his formidable skill.
More importantly, Ron had felt a sense of foreboding when Kiyo approached, and the absence of Poké Balls on the man confirmed it—Kiyo's power came from his own martial prowess.
This alone told Ron that he'd come to the right place.
"Young man, don't misunderstand! They're just having a friendly sparring match," Kiyo explained with a smile, clearly aware of how that scene might have looked.
After all these years, Kiyo knew exactly how to handle situations like this.
Having a rare visitor, whether they were here for a challenge or something else, was an opportunity to revitalize his dojo.
"Right, right. I get it—they're just burning off some extra energy," Ron said to himself, deciding not to hold the earlier scene against Kiyo.
After a brief conversation, Ron stated his purpose: he hoped to learn martial arts from Kiyo.
"You don't know, young man, but martial arts training is highly confidential. I can't teach just anyone," Kiyo replied, putting on a troubled expression.
"I have a million in my account. Consider it my tuition fee," Ron said coolly, pulling out a card to show off his wealth.
"…No problem! Follow me!"
At the sight of money, Kiyo's hesitation evaporated. Grinning ear to ear, he led Ron deeper into the dojo.
"Just to be clear, I want to learn real martial arts—techniques that can be applied in actual combat, not some flashy nonsense," Ron added, still wary of Kiyo's sudden agreement.
"Of course! I promise you'll leave this dojo a changed man!" Kiyo assured him, practically gleaming with enthusiasm.
There was no way Kiyo was going to let such a wealthy client walk away. He planned to milk this golden goose for all it was worth.
Half-believing Kiyo's promises, Ron followed him further into the dojo. Kiyo quickly gathered his disciples to perform a simple initiation ceremony for Ron before assigning a senior student to guide him.
While his students resumed their sparring matches, Kiyo retreated to his office to start drafting a detailed plan for Ron.
He quickly sketched out a three-year plan: 1 million per year for tuition, plus 500,000 for accommodation and meals. On top of that, there would be training fees, equipment maintenance costs, and other "miscellaneous" expenses.
Kiyo's face twisted into a grin as he calculated the final figure, though his expression looked somewhat… unsavory.
Half an hour later, Kiyo's senior disciple, Shin, brought Ron to the office.
"Ron, here's the plan I drafted for you. What do you think?" Kiyo said cheerfully, handing over his newly-written schedule.
"No need to look. Kiyo already told me that students here receive a breathing technique as part of their training. That's all I need—just hand it over," Ron replied smoothly.
"As for the extra money beyond tuition, consider it my donation to help rebuild the dojo."
Hearing this, Shin beamed with pride.
Earlier, he'd carefully followed his master's cues and worked hard to convince Ron to leave an additional 800,000 behind.
Without him, that money might have been lost!
Seeing Shin's proud expression, Kiyo wanted to scream, "Thanks a lot… you idiot!"
