"Ron, is this really where you live?"

As they stepped into Vermilion City, Dwight curiously surveyed the unfamiliar surroundings—the architecture, the local customs—and turned to Ron with the question.

"This place? Not exactly."

Ron paused for a moment, thinking it over, then offered a casual reply.

To him, Kanto was just a place he'd lived for a little over a year. He was more familiar with it than anywhere else, sure—but to say he grew up here would be a stretch.

Digging through the fog of fragmented memories in his mind, Ron realized something unsettling: the origin of this body—the true hometown—was a blur, unreachable even now.

Dwight didn't press the matter. Instead, his attention remained fixed on the vibrant cityscape around them.

Ron put on his headset and contacted Shadow.

"Kid, what made you think of calling me? Don't tell me something went wrong in Hoenn?"

The moment the call connected, Shadow's raspy voice came through, unchanged as ever—though there was a note of dry amusement in it, like he was hoping Ron had gotten himself into trouble.

"No trouble," Ron replied evenly. "I just returned to the Kanto region and thought I'd let you know. I've reached Mid Elite Four level now—and my other identity's power is equivalent to quasi-Elite Four."

"Once I've met with Bruno, if there's time, I'm open to taking on some missions again—preferably ones related to the Five Great Families."

He kept it short and to the point, then waited for Shadow's response.

Even through the phone, Ron could sense his old contact hesitate.

"You really are something else, kid… I can't even imagine where you'll end up at this rate."

"Alright. Once you've met with Bruno, we'll talk again. I'll do my best to accommodate your requests."

"Anything else?"

"No."

Beep—

Without taking off his headset, Ron opened another line, this time to check on Lars Flavian's current situation.

As for Bruno—or more accurately, the Kanto League—Ron had no intention of reaching out on his own.

...

At League HQ, within the Ranger Command Center, Hans gave his report to Bruno.

"My lord, Ron returned this morning. He entered Vermilion City and hasn't left since."

Bruno set his pen down, pausing for a thoughtful moment.

"Looks like Ron still harbors resentment toward the League. Can't blame him, honestly—after everything that happened, who wouldn't?"

"In that case, let him rest for two days. After that, have him come see me. Use that time to select suitable Rangers and Forest Hunters for the next phase."

To Bruno, Ron seemed to be handling things normally—surprisingly so. He figured another two days of leave would do no harm.

After the incident where Hoenn League tried to poach Ron, Bruno had become convinced of the young man's loyalty. Despite the tempting offers and political mistreatment, Ron had chosen the high road. That alone had earned Bruno's respect.

What Bruno didn't know… was that Ron had returned not to repay kindness with kindness—but to settle scores directly.

Outside a house much like Ash Ketchum's, Ron stood silently with a bouquet of flowers in his hands. And yet… he couldn't bring himself to knock.

He had learned a lot about Lily over time. How she became a Trainer, the mischief she got into, how she was the pride and only daughter of her family. How her mother had dreamed she'd become a police officer, only for her to end up as a Ranger instead.

Sometimes, Ron wondered: if he had never shown up, would Lily have lived a peaceful life? Joined the force? Found love with someone who would've kept her safe?

But those thoughts were just fantasy. Reality stood before him—and someone had to pay for it.

He laid the flowers gently at the doorstep… and left without a sound.

"My lord, I recommend we give Ron another two days of rest," Hans said into the phone. "Also… there's a boy with him. Around ten years old. No idea who he is yet."

Hans watched Ron walk away, the boy at his side.

Ron, for his part, wasn't surprised Hans had shown up.

Once he confirmed Hans wasn't following, he gave the signal. Gardevoir used Teleport, vanishing with Ron and Dwight in tow.

...

Cerulean City. Hatta Breeding House.

Normally bustling, the renowned breeding house was operating in semi-closed mode today.

Only select, thoroughly vetted staff—personally chosen and indoctrinated by Lars Flavian—were permitted to interact with clients. And none of them were qualified to meet with Ron.

Only a handful could: Lars himself, the Kidd-Killer brothers, and Amon.

"That's the situation. Unfortunately, with the resources we have, we still can't mass-produce or use those energy cubes to push Amon's Pokémon to Elite Four level," Lars explained.

"Even if they do reach that level, I'm not sure the cubes will still work effectively."

After recounting the major events that had transpired recently to Ron, Lars Flavian fell silent, awaiting his response.

Looking at Lars Flavian, Ron felt like he had struck gold.

At first, Ron had thought those energy cubes Lars had developed—which accelerated Pokémon growth—were only useful for helping a Pokémon swiftly transition out of its infant stage.

At a glance, they didn't seem all that impressive. But surprisingly, they had a profound effect on near-Legendary Pokémon.

What he hadn't expected was that the acceleration didn't just apply to a Pokémon's physical development—it extended to their strength as well.

Then again, perhaps it was only natural. After all, rapid growth without the power to sustain it would be like a tree with no roots—destined to fall.

To put it another way: it's like having the body of an adult but the strength of a child. A hollow shell.

"I understand now," Ron said calmly. "I'll take care of the resources and the Attribute Plates. Machamp and the others have already reached Elite Four-tier strength. Let's prioritize the energy cubes for them. As for Pupitar, it'll probably require more of your attention, Lars."

"That's no problem," Lars replied. "But I do want to ask you something."

"Ron, what exactly are you aiming for? You already possess Mid Elite Four strength, and someday you might even reach Champion-level. But I need to know: what do you intend to do—with all that power?"

After giving his report, Lars looked straight at Ron, his voice tinged with intensity. He didn't want this man to take a path that would lead to disappointment.

"Before I answer that," Ron began, his voice steady, "I need to tell you something. I'm still affiliated with Team Rocket."

"As for what I want to do, it's simple—replace the current leadership of the League. I want to breathe new life into Kanto. That's all."

He met Lars' gaze with composure, as if he were discussing what to eat for dinner.

"Then I swear my loyalty to you—until death," Lars said, unable to suppress the slight smile tugging at his lips, though his tone remained filled with respect.

"Until death," he repeated solemnly.

One by one, the others—Amon and the rest—voiced the same vow in unison.

Those gathered here were either people whom Ron had directly or indirectly helped, or individuals who had seen the League's darkness firsthand.

And now, hearing Ron's vision, only one thought remained in their minds—

They would give everything they had to help him achieve it.
