"Sorry, Brother Sparky!" Rainer said reluctantly as he watched the eldest brother approach.
The pressure was now squarely on Sparky's shoulders, as they had maintained their beliefs for so long only to lose two consecutive battles.
"Don't worry about it, I'll handle this!" Though Sparky recognized Ash's impressive strength, he couldn't show any uncertainty. Having accepted the challenge as brothers, they needed to see it through to the end.
Hearing this, Rainer quickly stepped aside. He and Pyro watched the battlefield intently, hoping their eldest brother could somehow turn the tide and secure a victory.
"You're truly powerful, stronger than any Trainer we've encountered before! However, as older brothers, we can never admit defeat in front of our younger sibling!" Sparky declared, looking at Ash with a serious expression.
Standing on the sidelines, Mikey felt a twinge of emotion. As his brother had just implied, although they kept pushing him to make a decision about evolving Eevee, they genuinely cared about him in other ways.
Ash understood the situation clearly. The three brothers were competing with each other, using Mikey's Eevee as the focal point. Yet, the fact that they were willing to offer evolution stones even to outsiders showed their generosity.
Being wealthy was one thing, but many rich people remained stingy. Their generosity toward others indicated how much they truly loved their younger brother Mikey.
"I understand your feelings. I've never questioned your qualifications as brothers. Our battle is simply an exchange of different training philosophies," Ash responded respectfully.
The brothers were acting out of love for their sibling, while Ash was standing up for the rights of Pokémon. Their fundamental beliefs weren't necessarily in conflict.
"Let's go, Jolteon!" Acknowledging Ash's response, Sparky wasted no more time and sent out his Electric-type Pokémon.
Jolteon entered the battlefield with sharp, focused eyes, while Pikachu assumed a fighting stance in response. Both being Electric-types, they seemed to exhibit the principle of like charges repelling—a natural tension existed between Pokémon of the same type.
"Jolteon, use Swift!"
Sparky took the initiative, commanding his Pokémon to attack immediately. Upon hearing the order, Jolteon opened its mouth as golden light flashed within, releasing a barrage of star-shaped projectiles that shot forward like darts.
"Pikachu, Thunderbolt!"
Faced with Swift—a move notorious for its unerring accuracy—Ash opted for a head-on confrontation. Pikachu jumped high into the air, powerful electric currents coursing through his body.
"Pikaaaa-CHUUUU!"
The electric attack discharged straight ahead, instantly colliding with the oncoming Swift. Under the impact of Pikachu's powerful electricity, the stars exploded continuously upon contact.
As Pikachu's power intensified, it gradually overpowered Swift, and the electrical discharge continued toward Jolteon.
Watching the powerful current heading toward his Pokémon, Sparky remained surprisingly calm. Jolteon stood its ground, unflinching. Everyone looked on in confusion as the Thunderbolt struck Jolteon directly.
BOOM!
A deafening roar erupted as lightning enveloped Jolteon completely. Within the electrical storm, Jolteon closed its eyes but showed no signs of distress. After a moment, all the fur on its body stood on end, making it resemble a spiky hedgehog.
With a defiant cry, Jolteon dispersed the electricity surrounding it. Witnessing this, everyone's expressions changed to shock.
"What? How is this possible? The attack had no effect at all!" Misty exclaimed in disbelief. Pikachu's Thunderbolt was incredibly powerful, yet Jolteon emerged completely unharmed.
Even when Pokémon resist attacks of their own type, they typically still take some damage. But Jolteon seemed to have become more energized instead.
"That's because Jolteon's ability is Volt Absorb," Brock observed, quickly understanding what had happened.
The ability to face Pikachu's electric attacks without concern was evident in how Jolteon didn't even attempt to dodge. Volt Absorb, as the name suggested, was the ability to absorb electrical energy.
Electric-type moves would cause no damage to Pokémon with this ability. Instead, the electricity would be absorbed and converted into energy that restored their health. Not only would such attacks fail to cause harm, but they would actually benefit Pokémon with Volt Absorb.
Ash immediately recognized that Jolteon possessed this ability. Even Pikachu seemed surprised—though an Electric-type himself, he could still be damaged by electric attacks.
To overcome an ability like Volt Absorb, one would need an ability like Motor Drive, but that was typically found in legendary Pokémon like Zekrom. Though fans often joked that Ash's Pikachu secretly had Motor Drive, that was merely humor rather than reality.
"Your Electric-type moves won't work against us! Jolteon, use Pin Missile!" Sparky called out triumphantly.
With electric attacks rendered ineffective against Jolteon, Pikachu had effectively been weakened. After absorbing the electricity and boosting its condition, Jolteon was ready to capitalize on its advantage.
At Sparky's command, Jolteon's eyes narrowed in concentration. The white mane around its neck suddenly stood erect as green energy began to emanate from it.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
The green energy transformed into countless needles that soared skyward before raining down like a deadly shower.
"We may not have electric attacks, but we have other moves! Pikachu, Quick Attack!"
Ash remained composed despite the rapidly descending Pin Missile. At his command, Pikachu burst forward with silver light streaming from his body. The Pin Missiles struck the ground one after another, but Pikachu successfully evaded them all.
"We'll use Quick Attack too!" Sparky countered immediately.
Jolteon also employed Quick Attack, charging toward Pikachu. The two speedsters rapidly closed the distance between them. Known for its exceptional speed among Eeveelutions, Jolteon's sprint matched Pikachu's pace perfectly.
CRASH!
The two collided violently at the center of the battlefield.
"Pi-ka!"
"Jolt!"
Both Pokémon were simultaneously knocked backward by the impact, their bodies flying in opposite directions. Gritting his teeth, Sparky shouted another command.
"Don't give up, Jolteon! Use Pin Missile again!"
Despite still being launched backward through the air, Jolteon responded to its trainer's call without hesitation. The mane on its neck bristled once more as countless green energy needles formed and shot toward Pikachu, who was also still airborne from the collision.
