Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Want to Learn? I'll teach you!
Kitazawa had one class fewer today than yesterday.
In the morning he taught "The Will of Fire," and in the afternoon a practical‑skills lesson.
When the classes were over, Kitazawa returned to his office.
He casually picked up the homework that was lying on his desk.
There was no assignment for Practical Skills—only Konoha History and The Will of Fire had homework.
Neither set of homework was difficult; everyone passed, and a handful of papers were particularly outstanding.
To Kitazawa's surprise, one of the excellent papers was written by Uzumaki Naruto.
It seemed his own teaching had worked well.
(This was not self‑flattery; in the original story, Naruto was the class dunce.)
"Class dunce" meant dead last in the entire class—hopeless both in theory and in practice.
Time moved on to the final period: the practical lesson.
"Today we're still practicing kunai throwing," Kitazawa announced, standing before the students.
"Those who haven't mastered it, keep practicing; those who have, you're free to do as you like."
Many students brightened at those words—especially the clan prodigies led by Uchiha Sasuke and Nara Shikamaru.
After all, "free activity" was as good as "no class."
"Darn it—miscalculated!" Inuzuka Kiba froze on the spot, regretting aloud:
"If I'd shown my real ability yesterday I'd be free now!"
"I'm hitting the bull's‑eye today!" Naruto clenched his fist.
He had already collected Kitazawa's snack reward yesterday; failing to master the technique today would be humiliating.
Hyūga Hinata stole a glance at Kitazawa.
After a brief hesitation she decided to stay and keep practicing kunai, even though she had already learned it.
"This teacher's unusual—I like him," Shikamaru said, finding a patch of grass and lying down with his hands behind his head.
"Totally," Akimichi Chōji agreed, sitting beside him and crunching a potato chip.
"Sasuke‑kun!" Haruno Sakura rushed up to Sasuke.
"Can you teach me that curved‑kunai trick you did yesterday?"
"I don't have time," Sasuke replied coldly, not even looking at her, and walked to the far side of the grounds.
Fire Style: Great Fireball Jutsu!
Forming seals, Sasuke released chakra; a fist‑sized fireball appeared in the air.
Disappointment crossed his face.
People called him a genius, yet compared with his brother Uchiha Itachi he was mediocre.
Itachi had mastered the Great Fireball after seeing it once; Sasuke could not.
"Why?" he muttered through gritted teeth.
He wanted to learn it quickly—to earn praise from his father and brother.
Whenever he pictured that scene he couldn't help smiling, yet it was only a fantasy.
"Your chakra control is poor."
The sudden voice startled him.
Sasuke turned to see Kitazawa.
He froze, his expression shifting before settling again.
Kitazawa was just an ordinary chūnin instructor, not even an Uchiha—what could he know about the Great Fireball?
Sasuke doubted he had any real skill.
"Come with me," Kitazawa said, reading Sasuke's thoughts.
The pride of the Uchiha was no surprise, but a mission opportunity rarely appeared—he wouldn't miss it.
"Where to?" Sasuke asked, puzzled.
"You'll know soon."
Kitazawa led him to a secluded training field on campus.
Sasuke had barely opened his mouth when an astonishing sight greeted him.
Fire Style: Great Fireball Jutsu!
With full power, Kitazawa spewed a gigantic fireball.
To Sasuke's shock, it was even larger than the one Itachi could produce.
It shattered his preconceptions.
"Want to learn? I'll teach you," Kitazawa said, smiling at Sasuke's stunned face.
Although the Great Fireball was the Uchiha's signature, it was easy to learn and very powerful, so many non‑Uchiha ninja used it too—including Kitazawa's late instructor.
Thus Kitazawa needn't worry about anyone questioning where he learned it.
After a moment, Sasuke snapped back to reality.
If he could release a fireball that huge, he would surely impress his father and brother.
"Kitazawa‑sensei, I want to learn," he said, spirits lifted.
At this age he was not as reserved as in the original timeline.
"To master the Great Fireball you must tackle two things," Kitazawa said kindly.
"First, chakra control; second, chakra nature transformation."
(The original story never showed how to train Fire nature, but it did show Wind nature training when Naruto studied under Asuma:)
1. Use Wind Release to cut a leaf.
2. Use it to split a waterfall.
3. Apply the transformation in an actual Wind‑style jutsu.
"Nature transformation is a bit early for you. Let's start by strengthening your chakra control."
He pointed to a tree nearby. "Gather chakra in your feet and walk up that trunk."
(The jutsu also involves a touch of chakra shape transformation, but at C‑rank it's simple—just make the ball big and round.)
"That easy?" Sasuke sounded doubtful.
"Try it," Kitazawa replied, smiling.
He remembered Sasuke failed his first tree‑climb in the original, and that was post‑graduation; as a new student he'd likely do worse.
"Watch me climb in one go!"
Feeling Kitazawa's skepticism, Sasuke snorted and stepped to the tree.
Chakra on his soles, he walked up the bark.
"See? Pretty easy—"
Champagne celebrations come early at a price: halfway up, his face changed and he fell.
"How was it?" Kitazawa chuckled.
"T‑the bark's too slippery!" Sasuke blushed, stubbornly excusing himself.
He got up, took a deep breath, and tried again.
[Current mission: earn initial recognition from classmate Uchiha Sasuke.]
[Reward: Fire Style – Phoenix Flower Jutsu.]
[Mission complete. Reward granted.]
Kitazawa raised an eyebrow. So the tsundere phase is already fading, eh?
A flood of information about the new jutsu filled his mind.
Watching Sasuke on the tree, Kitazawa pondered a problem:
How should he explain the origins of the system‑awarded ninjutsu?
Low‑level techniques could be credited to his deceased squad leader or teammates—dead men can't be questioned.
But advanced jutsu—B‑rank and up—couldn't use that excuse.
Ninja usually gained techniques two ways: a teacher's instruction, or official rewards from Konoha.
Stroking his chin, Kitazawa fell into thought.
[Your lifelong rival Uchiha Sasuke is training hard in Fire Release—you can't lose.]
[New mission: master a C‑rank jutsu faster than Sasuke.]
[Reward: Manipulated Shuriken Technique.]
[Accept mission?]
The sudden text made Kitazawa pause.
A mere chūnin becoming the savior's lifelong rival? The system had clearly set the stage.
Though pleased to see a new mission, it looked simpler than it was: he had no new jutsu to learn, even at C‑rank.
Should I go to Hiruzen Sarutobi? he wondered, rubbing his temples.
With no merit to his name, barging in would seem presumptuous.
