Chapter 423: Hoarding Thousands upon Thousands for Natural Disasters, Raising a Child, I Let It Go 11_2
After tidying up the room, she took her phone and walked out. The time was now 5:40 AM.
It was still early. Wen Qingyu had not yet gotten up. Su Zhiruan turned on the kitchen lights, pondering what to eat for breakfast.
She took some beef out of the fridge and chopped it into minced meat, then added soy sauce, salt, monosodium glutamate, pepper, and so on, stirring it all evenly to make a filling.
Next, she placed flour on the chopping board, mixed in salt and hot water until evenly combined, then spread it out to cool, making a scalded dough, and kneaded until smooth.
After kneading, she cut the dough into appropriate-sized pieces, rolled them into evenly sized wrappers, and filled them with the beef filling, pinching them into crescent-shaped dumplings with pleats.
During this process, she also put some millet in a pot and cut some pumpkin into small pieces, then cooked a pot of millet pumpkin porridge in the rice cooker.
Soon, she placed the prepared dumplings in a well-oiled and heated flat pan, frying them for half a minute before adding some water and covering with a lid.
Then all that was left was to wait for them to be ready.
Su Zhiruan took a seat at the dining table.
Checking the time again, it was now 6:30 AM.
Just then, a call popped up at the top of her phone.
She looked carefully and saw it was from her mother.
Wondering why her mother would call her early in the morning, Su Zhiruan answered the call.
The other side was very quiet.
"Ruanruan? Ruanruan... is it really you—"
Her mother on the other end clearly couldn't believe that Su Zhiruan would answer her call. But seeing that it was indeed Su Zhiruan who was on the display, she immediately lowered her voice and began to speak softly and excitedly as soon as the call connected.
"It's me." Su Zhiruan replied calmly, setting out bowls and chopsticks from the cabinet. The bowls and chopsticks clinked crisply while the pot bubbled thickly, accompanied by the sizzling of frying dumplings.
Hearing these sounds, her mother, with her years of cooking experience, instantly knew what she was doing. The thought of a delicious, steaming breakfast made her involuntarily salivate, wishing she could instantly be there beside Su Zhiruan to feast on it.
"Are you... are you doing okay? Where are you..." Her mother's lowered voice seemed like she didn't want others to overhear.
Su Zhiruan was noncommittal, "I'm at my place, making breakfast."
"Ruanruan... everything that happened before was Mom's fault, have you seen the messages I sent you? You must be able to understand your mom, right?" Her mother continued in a hushed tone, starting to lament to Su Zhiruan. To make it seem more convincing, she even started to cry, "These days I've suffered a lot. I thought your sister and your brother would be supportive, but in the end, they turned out to be worse than raising a dog. They wouldn't even give me a bite to eat. If you were by my side, I believe you, being such a filial child, would definitely take good care of your mother, right?"
Hearing this, Su Zhiruan couldn't help but laugh, "Auntie, are you talking to me? Bringing this up now, isn't it a bit too late?"
"What kind of wishful thinking are you making? Don't you think I can see through that?" Su Zhiruan checked the time, which was almost up. She opened the lid of the pot, and the bottom of the dumplings had turned to a golden brown crisp. They looked very appetizing, and the fragrance of beef instantly filled the air.
She chuckled leisurely, "Well, I'm going to eat breakfast now. I made beef potstickers this morning and millet pumpkin porridge. If I don't eat now, it will get cold—I don't have time to talk."
"Ruanruan... Ruanruan—"
Upon hearing this, her mother was filled with nothing but regret.
If only she had known earlier, she would never have given up on this daughter, at least on the surface. Because of the previous falling out, she had been too harsh on Su Zhiruan, clearly favoring Su Mingzhu and Su Yaozu. She didn't care at all about this middle daughter, which led to the current apocalypse. No matter how much she played the victim or begged for mercy, the other party no longer gave her so much as a glance.
Of course, what she didn't know was that the original owner of the body, who still had some filial piety towards her, had met a tragic end due to her kindness, ultimately being eaten alive by her own family. The present Su Zhiruan was not her daughter but an outsider come to claim justice from the entire family.
As Su Zhiruan prepared to hang up the phone, Wen Qingyu emerged from the room, looking somewhat anxious.
He tousled his hair, apologizing, "Sorry, I overslept."
"No need to apologize. Now that the two of us are living together, we can't always expect you to cook, can we? Whoever has the time should cook. Today, you'll get to taste my cooking." Su Zhiruan cut off the call abruptly and tossed her phone aside.
