Chapter 154: The Jutsu's Effect, and Mei Terumī
"What is going on?"
The Mist jonin, Suisugi, stared at the Kinoshita Genichi who had been impaled by two swords, his pupils constricting.
He had arrived earlier and had been silently observing from the side ever since Genichi was hit by the water and fire jutsu, trying to find a flaw for a one-hit kill. But what he saw and sensed was all real. Yet, after being hit, the opponent suffered no damage.
It wasn't a clone. Nor was it a ninjutsu like the Hydrification Technique. But if it was a genjutsu, why were the attacks real?
Suisugi watched as the impaled Genichi reached out, grabbed his two comrades, snapped their necks, and tossed them aside. The battle continued, with several people attacking him at once, only to be sent flying with screams of agony.
Suisugi couldn't find any weakness. He raised his hand and threw a kunai as a test. He then saw the kunai pass right through the enemy's body. The scene, illuminated by the firelight, seemed to distort as the kunai passed through.
Is it a trick of the light, or… Suisugi was full of doubt. It felt too strange. He frowned, analyzing the situation, so calm and cold-blooded that he watched his comrades die one by one.
Suddenly, a comrade was sent flying, sliding across the water to his side, startling him from his thoughts. Suisugi looked away, about to go and treat his comrade, but then he froze. He saw the shimmering moon reflected in the rippling water below.
At that moment, a sudden realization hit him. He turned his head sharply and yelled, "Don't attack him! It's a genjutsu clone! It's fake, not his real body! We have to find his real body to harm him! This guy's genjutsu is similar to the Second Mizukage's Steaming Danger Tyranny! We have to find the main body to break it!"
Genichi, who had just finished off another Mist-nin and had let another one stab him through, turned his neck and smiled at Suisugi. "Not bad, sharp insight."
Swoosh!
Genichi vanished.
So fast~ Suisugi's pupils shrank. He pushed off his feet and leaped backward. But Genichi suddenly appeared, his leg swinging up in a flying kick that connected with Suisugi's chin.
Poof!
Suisugi's body exploded into a spray of water. The water then surged up and reformed into his human shape, but he was met with the advancing Genichi. Their eyes met, and just as Suisugi was about to move, his body froze. Damn it, a genjutsu… my body won't move.
He still didn't understand why a genjutsu clone possessed the same fighting strength as the main body. A genjutsu like this was even stronger than the Second Mizukage's.
Genichi swung his hand. His palm knife, coated in wind chakra, was sharper than an ordinary ninja sword and sliced open Suisugi's neck.
Swoosh! Swoosh!
The sound of something cutting through the air was heard as a volley of kunai, their explosive tags burning, whistled toward him and then exploded with a roar. Flames shot into the sky, followed by a rolling cloud of evaporated steam.
When the steam cleared, Genichi was standing in the same spot, unharmed, his gaze sweeping around. He was surrounded by at least thirty Mist-nin. The sounds of battle could be heard from the forest. More and more were converging on their position.
This is good.
"It's useless!"
"Follow Suisugi's advice! Sensor ninja, find this guy's real body!"
"The rest of you, keep him busy! Don't fight him head-on!" a jonin commanded.
Someone swallowed hard. "But… this guy is Kinoshita Genichi!"
"Heh, so what if he is? If you kill him, he dies," a Kaguya clan ninja said with a cold smile and charged forward, a bone blade in each hand.
With someone taking the lead, the other Mist-nin also began to attack. The swordsmen engaged in close combat, while others looked for opportunities to use water, wind, or even fire jutsu, coordinating with each other.
However, it was all useless.
Genichi was fast, ignored their attacks, was a master of water, wind, and genjutsu, and could cast his techniques with incredible speed. A minute passed, and seven or eight Mist-nin had been killed.
The sensor ninja was sweating, his teeth clenched in horror. "Damn it, I can't sense him at all! There is no main body! That is the main body!"
A Mist-nin, lying on the water and spitting blood, stared with wide eyes. "Attacks are completely useless… This guy isn't even human…"
The commanding jonin, Sanjiku, had an ugly expression. "If that is the main body, then there is only one possibility… This guy's ability is some kind of Kekkei Genkai, like the Hōzuki clan's Hydrification Technique, which can grant immunity to certain attacks. Anyone skilled in Lightning Release, try it!"
A figure landed beside him. "I'll do it!" He formed hand seals. Lightning Release: Falling Thunder!
Lightning descended from the sky like the branches of a tree, enveloping Genichi. However, he simply ignored it. He clapped his hands together, and the surrounding water gathered, spiraled upwards, and condensed into a water dragon. The dragon's head opened, and massive water spheres shot out.
"Watch out! Scatter!" Sanjiku warned as he retreated.
The next moment, the water spheres struck. The water's surface exploded, the ground caved in, and the spheres themselves exploded on impact, creating a second wave of water that crashed out in all directions, sending droplets flying everywhere.
Hiss! Hiss!
Sanjiku, who had leaped back, was splashed by a few drops, and his clothes were immediately corroded, green smoke rising from them. "It's acid water!"
He heard piercing screams all around him. He looked and saw many of his comrades had been hit by the second wave of the attack. It was a miserable sight. Those who had died instantly from a direct hit now seemed lucky.
Just then, the water dragon Genichi had created collapsed. He raised his hands, and a spiraling water spear condensed in them.
Water Release: Hard Vortex Water Blade!
He threw the spear. It was so fast it was difficult to dodge, and even if you did, it would explode, forming a second water vortex to trap the enemy. And he had used his acid water for this as well. This was also the first time he had used this jutsu in a real battle. The effect was good.
A Thousand Killings Water Soaring, Heavenly Weeping, Water Mirror Technique, Water Gun Technique, Water Severing Wave… one water jutsu after another flowed from him, reaping the lives of the Mist-nin.
By the time Sarutobi Shinnosuke and Pakura had retreated to his side, only a scattered few of the surrounding Mist-nin were left standing.
Shinnosuke looked at the at least forty or fifty bodies densely packed on the water's surface and subconsciously swallowed. He knew Genichi was strong, very strong. The current Fourth Mizukage had been severely injured by him. But to see the dense pile of corpses with his own eyes… the impact was incomparable to just "hearing" about it.
Pakura, on the other hand, was calm. When she had fought the Mist, she had killed just as many, and their deaths had been even more gruesome and terrifying.
"A large number of Mist-nin are coming," she warned.
Genichi nodded, breathing a little heavily. His chakra was almost depleted. Of course, it was the chakra of the illusionary body created by Mirror Flower, Water Moon that was almost depleted.
The illusionary body created by Kyōka Suigetsu took half of the main body's chakra. Like a shadow clone, it possessed all of the original's abilities, unless it was a jutsu like Izanagi, whose cost exceeded the illusion's limits. The illusionary body, whether through the five senses or chakra perception, felt completely real, like the main body. It could ignore enemy attacks to a certain extent—any attack. At least, from what Genichi had tested so far, whether it was genjutsu, taijutsu, or the five basic ninjutsu, none of them were effective.
As for the upper limit of what it could withstand, he hadn't tested that yet. Attacks on the illusionary body were like trying to scoop the moon from the water; you reach out, and you get nothing. This was completely different from the Hydrification Technique's immunity to physical attacks, or the spatial transfer of a space-time ninjutsu like Kamui.
But Genichi knew very well that the illusionary body had its limits. One was its chakra limit. Every time it was hit, its chakra was rapidly consumed. The reason he hadn't dodged many of the attacks before was to test this. Although it would expose some information about the jutsu, it was necessary. And a partial exposure could also be a form of deception.
The second limit was the attack power. If it was crushed by an attack like a Tailed Beast Bomb, a large-scale, continuous, high-intensity attack, it would definitely be destroyed. But that would only destroy the illusion. When the illusion was destroyed, the real body would be revealed, and only then could it be attacked.
This was the illusion-type Kekkei Genkai, Mirror Flower, Water Moon, formed from the fusion of Water and Yin Release. It was extremely powerful, especially when the enemy couldn't see through the nature of the illusion and didn't have enough offensive power. It was very difficult to break.
"Can your chakra still hold out?" Pakura asked with concern.
"Don't worry," Genichi chuckled, then raised a single hand. His body, in the firelight, rippled like water, but it returned to normal in an instant.
Kyōka Suigetsu, release!
As for his main body's chakra, the portion that had been taken by the illusion had already recovered.
The one-armed Sanjiku, seeing this, thought, Has he dispelled the jutsu that makes him immune to attacks?
Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!
More Mist-nin appeared, completely surrounding them. There were even more than before.
"At least a hundred," Shinnosuke said, his gaze sweeping over them.
"The more, the better," Genichi said.
At this moment, Sanjiku was openly sharing the intel he had gathered. "Everyone, be careful! Kinoshita Genichi has a Kekkei Genkai-like ability that allows him to ignore any attack after casting it! Any attack! But it should consume a lot of chakra, as he just dispelled it."
"The one with the mask uses Scorch Release," another surviving ninja added. "It must be that person from the Sand. Kinoshita Genichi… we knew it was him. Only he would dare to carry out such a mission. Pakura of the Scorch Release… she was saved by Konoha! It was to interfere with our alliance with the Sand…"
Kinoshita Genichi plus Pakura of the Scorch Release. The faces of the Mist-nin were grim. Some of the chūnin and genin were even swallowing hard, their legs trembling.
"Stay behind me!" Genichi said. The next moment, he vanished, sliding across the water at high speed. He opened his mouth, and jets of high-pressure water shot out like white lasers. Three Mist-nin were pierced through the chest. The others scattered.
The ninja from other directions all launched their attacks, either throwing blades, casting ninjutsu, or charging with their swords, looking for an opportunity to strike. Behind Genichi, Shinnosuke and Pakura followed closely. Four of Pakura's fireballs flew through the air, incredibly agile. Shinnosuke was purely on defense, raising one high wall or water screen after another to block the numerous attacks for himself, Genichi, and Pakura, allowing them to focus on attacking.
The three of them working together, in the blink of an eye, broke through the encirclement, then turned and charged back in, aiming specifically for the densest concentrations of the enemy.
While they were wreaking havoc, high above Point B, Genichi's shadow clone launched a forced attack on the heavily guarded supply point in the same manner. He then summoned Minato's team of three to the ground.
Swoosh!
Minato and Kakashi vanished. Screams immediately rang out. A Mist-nin was killed by a kick from Minato. As he threw two kunai, he vanished again, and after two flashes, two more Mist-nin were taken care of.
On the other side, Kakashi held his ninja sword. His body and his blade were wrapped in lightning, and he moved at extreme speed, killing two men in two flickers. He then sheathed his sword, formed hand seals, and condensed high-intensity chakra in his hands, which he then shape-transformed into two lightning wolves that attacked the enemy at high speed. The two wolves attacked from different angles, creating a pincer attack.
As for Obito, he leaped onto the roof of a warehouse, formed hand seals, and spat out a giant fireball that roared toward the enemy.
And with Genichi's shadow clone, the Mist-nin were quickly dealt with.
BOOM! BOOM!
One warehouse after another was blown sky-high, becoming blazing torches that lit up the night, and also alerted the Mist.
After dealing with the ninja and blowing up the warehouses, Minato's team of four immediately rushed toward Point A. And at Point A, patches of the forest had been set on fire, merging into one, becoming brighter and brighter.
This time, the commander, the elite Mist jonin Bairin Kyumaru, watching from a distance and receiving the continuous reports, could no longer hold back. He ordered two hundred reinforcements to be dispatched. He had to suppress these troublemakers. Losing supplies was a small matter, but a shaken battle line was the most terrifying thing.
On the other side, just over five kilometers from the supply point, at the rear of the front line, Ao stood on a treetop, his expression grave as he watched the spreading firelight in the distance. He had a bad feeling. "It couldn't be Kinoshita Genichi, could it?" For the fighting to have continued for so long was unusual.
Just then, a beautiful figure appeared beside him. "If this continues, I'm afraid it will soon spread to the front line, won't it?"
Ao didn't look at Mei Terumī. He said with worry, "It might be Genichi leading a team to raid our logistics. That's why we had to withdraw from the Land of Fire last time."
"Kinoshita Genichi…" Mei frowned. "If it's him, he probably wouldn't just be targeting our supplies, right? After all, destroying a few supply points won't have the same devastating consequences as last time. His target should be… us."
Ao's expression changed. "This… you mean he's going to charge our battle line?"
"It's very possible," Mei analyzed calmly. "Within a certain range, we don't have that many troops. And his strength… he would definitely dare to do it. As long as he shakes our battle line, and then Konoha launches a full-scale attack from the front…"
Before she could finish, Ao had vanished from the treetop. He felt she was right. He had to inform the other jonin in charge.
Mei watched the spreading firelight, her fists clenched. "I hope it's not too late." Although her strength was already very outstanding, and she had mastered the Lava Release Kekkei Genkai, she had not revealed this ability before because many in the village were hostile to Kekkei Genkai users. It was not until Yagura took power that the political environment in the village improved.
But just from the various intel reports, she understood very well that she was not yet qualified to stand before that guy who was about her age.
But I will definitely catch up to you, and then stand before you, and fight you for my village, for my comrades! The firelight danced in Mei's eyes, like her burning fighting spirit.
At that moment, Genichi, who had just regrouped with Minato's team, did not know that someone had already made him their goal to pursue.
"Reinforcements are coming from the Mist command post," Minato said, sensing them with his finger on the ground.
Shinnosuke and Pakura silently took out nutritional supplements and injected them into their arms. After the continuous high-intensity battles with Genichi, their chakra was almost completely depleted.
"Then, it's time for us to charge the enemy's battle line," Genichi decided.
Minato nodded in agreement. "If we wait any longer, the Mist will probably react and deploy troops to block us." He then said to Kakashi and Obito, "You two, use a supplement as well."
"Yes, sensei," Kakashi nodded and took one out.
Obito, however, was still in shock. There were too many bodies around them. At least one or two hundred, right?
"Obito?" Minato reminded him again.
"Yes!" Obito snapped back to reality and hurriedly responded. But he first took out some eye drops to moisten his eyes. Seeing this, Kakashi couldn't help but make a snide comment. "You weren't so scared by the bodies that you're crying, were you?"
Obito's face flushed. "Nonsense! It's just the smoke!" He put his goggles back on and quickly injected the supplement.
Seeing that he was ready, Genichi stood up. "Let's go."
The six of them set off, heading straight for the Mist front line, five kilometers to the east. Behind them, a batch of Mist-nin were in hot pursuit.
When the pursuers were less than two kilometers away, Genichi created a shadow clone and left it behind. He then shouted, "Everyone, speed up!"
Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!
Minato and the others immediately picked up the pace. Obito gritted his teeth and followed behind. Kakashi's body was wrapped in lightning, his speed matching Shinnosuke's.
Damn it, if I had my Sharingan… Obito thought, looking at Kakashi's back, full of unwillingness.
Soon, the six of them were close to the Mist front line. Genichi could already sense a squad coming from the front to intercept them.
"Prepare to engage!" he shouted. "Kakashi, signal Master Jiraiya and the others with the flare!"
"Got it!" Kakashi replied, took out the signal flare, and fired it into the sky.
On the Konoha front line.
Jiraiya was resting against a tree. A figure suddenly appeared beside him. "Master Jiraiya, we saw the signal flare!"
Jiraiya opened his eyes and stood up. He looked up through the gaps in the leaves at the bright moon in the sky, then gave a solemn order. "Relay this command: all-out attack on all fronts! No holding back! I want to shatter the Mist's battle line, completely and in one go!"
