Chapter 115: Battle Against the Six Swordsmen of the Mist
Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!
The faint sound of something cutting through the air reached them. Akimichi Tōdō's voice was grave. "Captain, the Mist-nin are catching up."
Genichi turned his head and saw a group of masked Mist-nin following them closely from behind. On their flanks, even faster ninja leaped through the forest like monkeys, quickly drawing parallel with them.
There were a total of 36 elite Mist Anbu. But Genichi knew that this wasn't the full extent of the force sent to kill him. There were definitely more people blocking the path ahead.
They really think highly of me, Genichi sneered inwardly, but he wasn't flustered in the slightest.
However, Akimichi Tōdō's heart sank. There were too many enemies. But the thought of Genichi's Flying Thunder God Technique reassured him. They didn't have to fight; if they couldn't win, they could still run.
Suddenly, shuriken flew at them from both sides. The Mist-nin had begun their probing attacks.
Genichi drew his sword, easily deflecting the incoming shuriken. Akimichi Tōdō swung his long staff, creating an impenetrable defense. His large frame didn't hinder him at all.
"Captain, there are people ahead!" Tōdō suddenly warned.
They had just reached the edge of the forest and could clearly see a large number of unmasked Mist-nin blocking their way. Genichi's perception swept over them. Exactly forty people.
In total, there were 76 Mist-nin, front and back.
And Genichi saw some familiar faces.
The Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist! Or rather, the Six Swordsmen now.
"Captain, what do we do?" Tōdō had already slowed down.
Just then, from the front, back, left, and right, four Mist-nin simultaneously used the Hidden Mist Technique. A thick fog began to rapidly envelop Genichi and Tōdō.
Genichi moved to Tōdō's side. As a kunai dropped to the ground, Genichi placed his left hand on Tōdō's back, and the two of them vanished.
The next moment, the thick fog rolled in, completely blanketing the forest.
Still in the southern Land of Fire, on the outskirts of a small town, Genichi appeared with Akimichi Tōdō. Ever since he learned the Flying Thunder God Technique, leaving markers had become a habit. He had left Flying Thunder God kunai in almost every town in the southern Land of Fire during this mission.
"Tōdō, you provide support from here." Genichi handed a kunai to him.
Tōdō took it but said, "Captain, is there really a need to get entangled with the Mist-nin?"
"This is the Land of Fire, not the Land of Water," Genichi said coldly. "They can't just come and go as they please, trying to kill whoever they want."
He took off his mask and unstrapped his Anbu sword, then formed a hand seal and summoned his twin blades. These were custom-made chakra blades, one long and one short, that Genichi had never used before. Today was the day to christen them with blood. He slung the long sword across his back and tucked the short sword into the back of his belt.
"Besides," Genichi said with a light laugh, "I also want to see my own limits." He then vanished from the spot.
Within the dense fog, the Mist-nin were still searching for Genichi's tracks. One of them stood before the Flying Thunder God kunai, frowning in thought. Suddenly, he realized something, and his expression changed drastically. But before he could warn his comrades, Genichi appeared in a flash. With a swing of his short sword, blood sprayed as half the man's neck was sliced open.
"Look out!" A nearby Mist-nin saw this and shouted a warning to the others.
As he shouted, a Mist-nin skilled in the Silent Killing technique had already approached soundlessly, striking at Genichi from the side.
Clang!
Sparks flew as Genichi turned his body to block the attack. The assassin, failing on his first strike, immediately retreated, melting back into the swirling mist.
Genichi's ears twitched. He flickered away, dodging a dense volley of shuriken, then flicked his left wrist, sending four Flying Thunder God kunai flying out. The next moment, he vanished, then reappeared in a series of flashes, his short sword slitting throats. In an instant, he had killed four more Mist-nin.
At that moment, the entire foggy area fell into a dead silence.
Sensing no change in the mist, Genichi knew that none of the men he had killed were the ones maintaining the Hidden Mist Technique.
"You're using those kunai to teleport, aren't you?" a voice came from within the fog. Genichi looked toward the sound but didn't attack.
Then, from another direction, the same voice spoke again. "Kinoshita Genichi, we've seen through your tricks. You're a dead man today!"
Genichi didn't respond. He flicked the blood from his short sword, sheathed it, and then began forming a series of hand seals.
Art of Pyo, Art of Kai, Art of Jin, Art of Zai.
Finally, Genichi clapped his hands together, opened his mouth, and spat out a high-pressure blade of water. This wasn't an ordinary Water Severing Wave. It was the Water Sand Severing Wave, a combination ninjutsu of Earth and Water Release. It added sand, formed by Earth Release nature transformation, to the original jutsu, enhancing the water blade's cutting power and speed.
A continuous stream of water blades shot from Genichi's mouth, tearing through the fog and striking at the hidden Mist-nin. The first one he targeted had no time to react and was pierced through the chest, collapsing with a look of utter shock. The ninja next to him felt a chill run down his spine. He erupted with chakra, instantly using the Body Flicker Technique while shouting, "Watch out, he can sense and lock on—Aaargh!"
A blood-curdling scream echoed. The ninja had reacted quickly, but he was a step too slow. His calf was hit, cleanly severed. However, his warning still had an effect. The Mist-nin hidden in the fog all moved from their original positions. Even so, two more were killed by the high-speed water blades.
Just then, four Mist-nin silently charged out from four different directions.
Genichi changed his hand seal to the Art of Zen. He stopped spitting water blades and instead gathered a swirling current of water around his body.
Water Release: Water Formation Wall!
The four Mist-nin brought their swords down, striking the rotating wall of water.
"Damn it!" one of them cursed under his breath.
Genichi had broken their Silent Killing technique. His sensory abilities were too strong. What they didn't know was that if he hadn't learned the Divine Mind, Heavenly Sense Jutsu, Genichi would have been in real trouble inside the fog, as his Heavenly Water, Boundless technique would have been useless. But the Divine Mind, Heavenly Sense Jutsu was different; it could use the earth as a medium for perception.
Their attack having failed, the four ninja immediately withdrew their swords and retreated back into the mist.
The water wall dispersed, and Genichi followed them like a shadow. In an instant, he caught up to one of the retreating ninja, clamped a hand over his face, and with terrifying strength, crushed the man's mask.
Too fast… The thought had barely formed in the horrified ninja's mind before Genichi slammed him into the ground, his brain going blank. Genichi then grabbed him and threw him.
Another Mist-nin who charged out saw this and dodged instead of trying to catch his comrade. He knew that if he tried, he would surely die. But just as he dodged the flying body, Genichi appeared before him, his crimson, evil eye slamming into his field of vision. At such a close distance, the mist naturally couldn't block the Sharingan's power.
The Mist-nin stood there, dazed.
Just then, the dense fog rapidly dissipated. The Hidden Mist Technique had become a hindrance to them, nullifying their numerical advantage, so they decisively canceled it.
Genichi squeezed the neck of the ninja caught in the genjutsu. He scanned the surrounding Mist-nin and smiled. "Who's next?"
Gulp.
One of the Mist-nin couldn't help but swallow nervously. This guy was terrifying. He had a feeling that it wasn't the Konoha ninja who was surrounded, but… them!
Hōzuki Chigetsu's face was grim as he stared at Genichi. "Even if it's down to the last man, we will kill you today!"
As he spoke, a bolt of lightning descended from the sky, striking at both Genichi and the ninja he held. It was Kurosuki Raiga, attacking from behind Genichi, completely ignoring his own comrade. A crazed smile was on his face. "Accept your glorious funeral!"
Swoosh!
Genichi vanished with the Mist-nin, reappearing next to another Flying Thunder God kunai. In the next instant, a scroll covered in explosive tags wrapped around him.
BOOM!
It was the Blastsword! Hōzuki Chigetsu and the others had fought Minato Namikaze before and had experience dealing with the Flying Thunder God. Unfortunately, simply keeping an eye on the kunai wasn't enough to counter it. In the end, it came down to a battle of reaction speed.
The moment the explosion went off, Genichi had already vanished again.
Kurosuki Raiga attacked once more, his lightning striking the other three kunai simultaneously. But Genichi didn't appear. He and the captured ninja reappeared next to the kunai that had just been blown up. He then threw the Mist-nin in his hand at the wielder of the Blastsword.
Munashi Jinpachi swung his sword viciously, cleaving his flying comrade in two. The scroll on his Blastsword then unfurled, wrapping around the two halves of the body. He had seen Minato use Kusa's body to teleport before, which meant this comrade probably had a marker on him as well.
However, before the Blastsword could detonate, one half of the corpse exploded first. On the other side, Genichi raised a single hand, detonating the explosive tag he had placed on the Mist-nin.
At the same time, Hōzuki Chigetsu released his Twin Swords, Hiramekarei. He swung them, and a giant energy blade formed from chakra sliced toward Genichi.
Genichi didn't use the Flying Thunder God this time. He turned, and the bandaged Samehada was already in his hand, blocking the energy blade.
"You killed Suikazan Fuguki!" Chigetsu was shocked, then quickly withdrew his swords. The bandages on Samehada had come undone, and its scales bristled as it began to madly absorb the power of Hiramekarei.
"Die!"
Biwa Jūzō, wielding the Executioner's Blade, charged forward, while three other Mist-nin descended from above. But faster than them all was the Longsword: Nuibari, which suddenly shot up from the ground.
Ting!
Genichi held his sword horizontally, blocking Nuibari with Samehada. He then kicked Samehada, sending it flying up. He caught it with one hand and swung it at Jūzō. At the same time, he tossed a kunai into the air.
Clang!
Samehada collided with the Executioner's Blade. The terrifying force made Jūzō's expression change drastically. Before he could redirect the force, he was sent flying back, sword and all.
In the next instant, Genichi vanished, reappearing in the air. He swept Samehada horizontally, and with the sound of breaking swords, the three Mist-nin all screamed as they were sent flying.
The energy blade from Hiramekarei slashed again, and Nuibari shot up from below like a venomous snake. But Genichi had vanished. Their attacks were fast, but they couldn't match his reaction speed. He disappeared an instant before their attacks landed. This was the superiority of the Flying Thunder God; it couldn't be broken just by knowing how it worked. The key was having sufficient speed, or at least equal reaction time.
Just like Madara Uchiha, who, when facing Tobirama Senju's Flying Thunder God, turned the tables and instantly killed him. That was because Madara's reaction speed was fast enough, and he was familiar with Tobirama's attack patterns. But clearly, Hōzuki Chigetsu and the others did not possess such an ability.
Seeing that their surveillance tactic was ineffective, Chigetsu immediately sheathed Hiramekarei and flew through hand seals.
Water Release: Exploding Water Colliding Wave!
He spat out a torrent of water that continuously rose, forming a pyramid-like mountain of water that lifted his body up. The surging water then poured out in all directions, crashing into every corner, destroying trees, and striking the Flying Thunder God kunai, instantly creating a swamp and submerging the kunai five or six meters deep.
You want to play with water jutsu against me?
On the water's surface, Genichi sheathed Samehada, clapped his hands together, took a deep breath, and then spat out a volley of vacuum bullets that swept toward the numerous Mist-nin charging at him from all directions.
Wind Release: Vacuum Sphere!
Wind Release: Vacuum Wave!
Taking another breath, Genichi spat out an arching wave of vacuum that sliced through two Mist-nin who had just dodged the vacuum spheres, cutting them both in half.
Boom!
The Executioner's Blade came down from above, cleaving Genichi in two. His body then splashed apart into a spray of water.
Under the sunlight, the countless water droplets refracted a crystalline light, reflecting the entire surrounding scene.
