Chapter I - An Accident

Lily checked out from work, stepped outside and started working towards the bus stop. The weather outside was nice, and she was feeling better than usual. Her job in the city archive was not exciting, but she was starting to get along with her new coworkers. Working in the archive was not her dream job, but she had to make ends meet until she finished University, and sorting out old files was hardly the toughest job she had done to support herself. One of her coworkers had even invited her out, but she was not yet sure if she wanted to accept. Lily really liked Nat, but she had always been a little shy about these things, and she didn't want to ruin a potential friendship. It is not like she had no experience with relationships, but she preferred to take things slow. She let the familiar thoughts around their course as she reached the bus stop. It was empty, as it often was when she finished work, and she took a seat on the small bench. She reached for her purse, and pulled out a book. It was another one of the fantasy novels she enjoyed reading, and she dove into it while she waited for her bus to arrive. Her reading was interrupted a few minutes later  however, when she heard a car horn shrieking to her left. Lily spun around, and she saw a large, gray truck speeding through a red light. She had no time to react as the truck drove full speed into an oncoming car, sending it spinning straight into the bus stop where Lily was sitting. The car hit her, sending her flying through the glass back of the bus stop. She hit the ground hard, and she felt hot blood streaming down her face. She tried getting up, but could not feel her legs. Her vision became blurry, and her whole body hurt.

I guess I don't have to think about that date after all, Lily thought to herself, as the light faded from her eyes.

When Lily awoke, she had no idea how much, if any, time had passed. She felt no pain, which she realized was because she had no body. In fact,as far as she could tell, she was an orb drifting aimlessly in a formless void.

Is this the afterlife? she wondered as she tried to get used to her new situation. If so, there must be more to it than being stuck in a dark void forever.

She tried to make out anything in the darkness, which was not easy in her current state, but after a while she managed to spot two sources of light. One of them was above her, and the other was below, although directions didn't make much sense in her current form.

Do I go for the white light above,or the purple below, she asked herself as she contemplated her options. I always liked purple, so what the hell, let's try that one first.

Having made the decision, Lily tried moving her spherical form, and with some effort, she managed to slowly float downwards, closer to the source of the purple light, which became bigger and brighter. She had no way of telling how long it took, but eventually Lily found herself floating in front of what looked like a  purple portal. She briefly contemplated checking out the other light, but it was barely visible now, and she didn't want to spend any more time in the void that she had to. The portal had a seductive pull, like it was calling for her soul specifically, and seeing no other options, she floated inside. She was sucked in, and for a short moment, she ceased to exist as the portal transported her soul outside the void.
