Otaku Witch

Chapter 977: 597. Dangerous Oiran

The Oiran parade continued to move forward slowly, and Dorothy watched the procession with great interest.

This was a large group of about a hundred people. At the forefront were witches wearing monster masks on their faces.

The homebody witch glanced at these masks and found they were common Japanese monsters like charming foxes, kappas, tengus, and so on.

These peculiar witches were the vanguard officers of the Oiran parade. They danced strangely, which to Dorothy looked like some kind of shamanistic dance, while humming some oddly pitched songs.

Although the songs and dances were peculiar, they were indeed effective. It seemed to be some kind of mysterious ritual, as Dorothy could sense that the emotions of the onlooking crowd were being stirred up by these officers' performance, making them significantly more excited. As a result, the atmosphere became much more lively.

"This seems to be some kind of battle dance, although its battle spirit strengthening effect is weakened, it still easily excites people."

Dorothy evaluated the songs and dances, thinking that these Japanese witches really knew how to play. This kind of battle dance, which should be used to boost warriors' morale and blood rush on the battlefield, was being used in such a bizarre context now; this was truly some kind of talent.

Emmmm... well, in a way, the Oiran parade seemed like an imminent "expedition," except that the battlefield was just a tad bit special.

Behind those monster vanguard officers were some bands holding various musical instruments, led by two witches playing the Japanese shamisen with great skill, guiding the entire band's performance.

Similarly, this music was not ordinary. Dorothy heard traces of significant "Sound Magic" within it.

In this idealistic magic world, sound also contained powerful strength. The magic that could harness this strength was called Sound Magic.

The simplest and most common Sound Magic was one that all witches knew how to perform, as magic spells needed to be chanted after all.

However, the slightly more specialized Sound Magic had two branches.

One was the Sound Killing Technique, using sound as a weapon for direct combat, like the Lion's Roar Curse or the Ghost Wailing Curse.

The other was the Art of Illusory Sound, using sound as a medium for casting spells to influence a target's body or spirit, usually with various illusionary techniques, but it could also include combat songs and other enhancing auxiliary magic.

The homebody witch detected the flavor of the Art of Illusory Sound from this band, but since she only had a slight understanding of it, she looked to her junior sister beside her.

Audrey, being an actress witch whose dream was the stage, was quite skilled at Sound Magic.

"Yes, indeed, and at quite a high level,"

Little Fox nodded and then spoke through the puppet she controlled.

Thus, Dorothy nodded and continued to look further back.

Following the band was a group of bodyguards, about thirty of them, wearing battle robes resembling haori, tachi at their waists, and holding batons.

"Goodness, an entire group of Great Witches. Am I strolling the Flower Street or visiting a battle group?"

The homebody witch roughly sensed the Mana levels of these bodyguards and couldn't help but be secretly amazed at how absurd it was.

As a Martial God, she could see through these bodyguard witches' combat magic skills just by their walking posture, and these bodyguards were quite competent. They had all basically formed their Martial Souls, attaining the level of Martial Saints.

It has to be said, it was really a waste of talent for such an elite armed group to serve as bodyguards for an Oiran. With this combat power, they could easily conquer a mid-level world on the frontlines.

Behind the bodyguard group was a maid group carrying lanterns, fewer in number, around ten people split into two rows, each holding a red lantern with the Ibuki pattern, heads lowered, stepping quickly with small strides.

"Alright, after the assault group is the artillery group, right?"

The homebody witch was already calm and composed, her gaze quickly scanning the "lantern-carrying maids" whose Mana levels were around 500,000, and then she looked further back.

And there, at the center of the procession.

Following the lantern-carrying maids was a pair of identical twin girls in red, looking about ten years old, with chubby little faces as delicate as carvings, very cute, obviously future beauties.

The girl on the left held a long tobacco pipe, while the one on the right carried an exquisite tobacco box.

Dorothy thought back to the Oiran parade standards she'd seen in her previous life and realized these were the so-called "Totsu".

"Totsu" was the bodyguard maid of the Oiran, usually young girls about ten years old, called "Totsu" because their body hair hadn't fully grown yet.

"Totsu", while serving as the Oiran's maid, was also a future Oiran candidate. Generally, those "Totsu" eligible to accompany the Oiran in the Oiran Parade had the potential to become future Oiran.

And now, this pair of twin "Totsu" in the procession seemed very promising for the future, as twins were a super bonus factor.

It's just.....

"Emmmmm... ten-year-old girls with about 150,000 Mana?"

The homebody witch looked at these two powerful "Totsu", then at herself, having only 50,000 Mana at her age, and couldn't help but feel a bit despondent.

Have times changed so much that even the courtesan industry is so competitive? Do Oiran have to be Genius Witches these days?
