Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Orion and Selene
In a primordial void, where space was an infinity of darkness between universes, Orion and Selene appeared, materializing at the top of a singular dimension. Selene opened her eyes in a mixture of amazement and fascination when she realized where they were. Before them, hovered a universe that defied natural laws, a perfect fusion between technology and magic, something that even for a goddess of enchantments seemed unattainable.
This place had a structure that unfolded in infinite layers. In the heart of this universe, megacities formed of shining metal and energetic crystals floated, connected by gigantic circuits of light, as if the entire cosmos had been transformed into an immense network of living data, pulsating with the consciousness of its inhabitants.
Selene watched in awe, unable to contain her astonishment, her mouth forming an "O" as she saw the myriad of artificial planets and constellations, aligned in a geometric perfection that seemed like a work of cosmic art. She could see a complexity that few gods could comprehend.
"Do you remember Mir, the God of Technology?" Orion asked with a slight smile, noticing Selene's expression of wonder.
She nodded slowly, still in shock. "Yes... Mir boasted of being the only one capable of creating something as advanced as the concept of technology itself." Selene smiled, an almost childlike smile. "He would be obsessed to see this... a universe that defies even the capabilities of his knowledge."
Orion crossed his arms, still looking intently around. "This universe was conceived to be more than a structure of technology; it is a fusion between technological advancement and spiritual essence. Every atom here pulses with living energy, but its mechanics are of an artificial domain. It is like an intelligent and self-aware organism."
Selene slid her fingers through the air, instinctively activating her aura to sense the energy around her. Her every movement revealed floating data and information, abstract holograms that glided through the air, showing an infinity of interconnected worlds.
"This is…" She hesitated. "More than technology. This is a perfect symbiosis between life and machine."
Orion watched her closely, delighted by her ability to absorb this with such ease. He approached, extending his hand in a gesture that, in other circumstances, would have seemed polite. "I knew you would understand the grandeur of this universe."
Selene looked at him, her pink eyes catching the glow of the technological constellations around them. "Why did you bring me here, Orion? What did you want me to see?"
He sighed, a deep sound that rumbled like distant thunder. "I brought you here to show you what lies beyond creation itself. Universes like this are rare, created by beings that transcend even the concept of divinity."
Orion looked around, contemplating the vast starry void around him. "This universe, in principle, should not exist. But for reasons that transcend comprehension, trillions upon trillions of years ago, the 'administrators' allowed its existence." He smiled slightly. "Interesting, don't you think?"
Selene stared at him in silence, absorbing his words. Her expression was a mix of fascination and skepticism.
"Despite its grandeur, this universe is... fragile." Orion continued in a murmured tone. "The technology here does not touch the profound concepts of the Sea of Dao, the true ocean of creation that permeates the multiverse. And magic, once alive, slowly fades. There is no one left to seek it, no one to understand it, so this essential force is disappearing."
Selene narrowed her eyes, intrigued. "What exactly do you mean by that?"
"In this universe, civilizations have taken a different path," Orion explained, with an enigmatic glint in his eyes. "Here, technology has advanced on unimaginable scales, on many planets. So advanced that even technological gods from other universes would be eclipsed." He paused, letting the thought sink in.
"Humans here," he continued, "are ephemeral creatures, with a lifespan of only 80 to 100 years. But that frailty...brought with it a burning desire to accomplish great things. That longing has turned into strength. And you, Selene, in this universe, would occupy a supreme position, a goddess of Desire, of Feelings, and of Enchantment."
Orion turned to her, his voice now barely audible, but charged with intensity. Selene felt a slight shiver run down her spine. "Selene, do you understand what this means?"
She blinked in confusion and murmured hesitantly, "So... you brought me here to...?"
Orion stared at her, an enigmatic expression on his face. "You, a goddess with mastery of desires... do not fully understand your own power, your own Daos. That is why, until now, you have not broken through the void that limits you. You have not yet reached the next step in your cultivation."
Orion let the words hang in the air, like a spark waiting to be lit.
Selene, now awakened from her limited vision, stared at Orion with a new glow in her eyes, as if, for the first time, she saw the vastness of the cosmos reflected in them. The world around her seemed to have changed, its colors intensified, and her heart, which had previously known only divine yearnings, pulsed with an almost human curiosity and excitement.
"So... now what do we do?" she murmured, her voice trembling with anticipation, a shy smile forming on her lips.
Orion held out his hand with a gentle, inviting gesture. His eyes, deep and full of mystery, watched her with a touch of amusement and affection. "My dear goddess," he said, smiling charmingly, "let us live what humans here seek with such determination, those worldly desires that, for them, are the very meaning of life."
Selene felt heat rise to her cheeks, a slight blush that contrasted with her divine bearing. With a smile that lit up her face, she reached out, intertwining her fingers with Orion's. The touch was at once firm and gentle, as if they were holding something precious.
The two exchanged a look filled with newly discovered chemistry (in Selene's view). The vastness of the universe seemed closer, the moment suspended between the eternal and the fleeting. Selene smiled brightly, feeling the warmth of Orion's hand and, for the first time, savoring the unknown that awaited her.
