Chapter 68: Chapter 68: The Whole Island Falls, Welcome to Zombie Paradise
It didn't take long.
Those military officers quickly became Old Ren's midnight snack.
Vincent's punishment for them was simple: turn them into zombies and unleash them on their beloved homeland. Weren't they ready to die to protect it? Well then, he'd let them destroy it with their own hands.
Fortunately, one of the surviving foreigners still knew how to steer a ship, so Vincent left the sailing to them. With Old Ren still onboard, not one of them dared disobey.
…
Three nights later.
Vincent Fox and Autumn Summer arrived safely at a port of the island nation.
Taking advantage of the cover of darkness, Vincent released the zombies and launched a surprise attack on the harbor.
After confirming through experimentation that even the lesser zombies' virus could spread efficiently, he then turned to Old Ren and dealt with him personally roasting him with flames and sending him straight to the afterlife.
Truth be told, Vincent felt a tinge of reluctance when finishing Old Ren off. The zombie had become surprisingly obedient.
What a pity.
But to prevent any further evolution, Vincent had to eliminate the threat early, crushing it before it could become a problem.
If Old Ren had continued to evolve unchecked, he might have eventually surpassed even Vincent. And if that happened, one mistake could cost both him and Autumn their lives.
Vincent wasn't stupid. He would never let that happen.
…
Three more days passed.
The entire city of Osaka fell to the zombie infestation.
After Vincent discovered that second-generation infected zombies evolved at an extremely slow pace, he stopped bothering to manage them. Instead, he let them roam free and bite whoever they pleased.
Each zombie needed to drain the blood of at least a thousand people before it could evolve even once. Reaching the level of a flying zombie like Old Ren? Practically impossible.
None of these newly turned zombies had anywhere near the talent Old Ren did.
Left unchecked, the infection spread like wildfire. Within just three days, zombies had completely overrun Osaka.
On the mainland of the Xia Kingdom, there were still Taoist exorcists like Uncle Nate who could fight and kill zombies. But here in the island nation, there were no such protectors.
With Vincent secretly pushing things along, the zombies grew in number at an astonishing rate.
In a matter of days, their population surged into the tens of thousands.
Come nightfall, the streets of Osaka were crawling with hopping, moaning zombies.
…
On the seventh day, Kyoto and Kobe followed suit, falling to the undead.
Only then did the island nation's leaders realize how grave the situation was. They issued emergency orders, recalling every military unit abroad in hopes of using modern warfare to battle this supernatural threat.
…
By the fourteenth day, Fukuoka, Kawasaki, and Nagoya had all become zombie playgrounds.
Mass panic swept the nation as citizens fled in all directions, plunging the entire island into chaos.
And on that very night, the nation's military faced off against the zombie horde in a full-scale war.
Unfortunately, their advanced weapons proved almost useless. While they could handle low-tier zombies, they had little to no effect on evolved ones.
The battle ended in utter defeat for the military.
…
By the twenty-fifth day, even Tokyo had reported zombie sightings.
At this point, the zombie apocalypse had consumed the entire island. The tide had turned beyond reversal.
Even Vincent, the mastermind behind it all, could no longer stop it if he wanted to.
The island's elite and powerful began abandoning their nation, fleeing overseas by ship.
And so, the once-glorious island nation began its slow march toward total collapse.
…
That night, in a quiet residential home.
Vincent sat by the window, gazing blankly out into the night.
"Dinner's ready!"
Autumn Summer walked out from the kitchen with a tray of dishes and gently placed them on the table.
The aroma of freshly made food quickly pulled Vincent's attention back to reality.
There weren't many dishes just three simple entrees and a soup but they were elegant, flavorful, and looked absolutely delicious.
Vincent took a bite, and his taste buds instantly lit up. He couldn't help but sigh in satisfaction.
"This is amazing… Autumn, you've been cooking for me this whole time. You must be tired."
Indeed.
For nearly a month now, Autumn had been preparing every meal for him, giving Vincent peace of mind.
Of course, he could've found someone else to cook but strangers couldn't be trusted. What if they poisoned the food? At least with Autumn, he could eat without worry.
From calling her "Little Summer" to using her full name "Autumn" – that was her request.
"It's just cooking, what's so tiring about that?"
Autumn smiled softly. "It's the least I can do."
Vincent chuckled and focused on his food, saying no more.
When he was almost done eating, Autumn suddenly spoke up again.
"Vincent, we're going back tomorrow, right?"
Vincent thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah. Our mission ends at noon."
"Are we going zombie hunting tonight?" she asked.
Vincent shook his head. "No need. We've killed enough. Tonight, we rest."
Together, they'd killed well over a hundred thousand zombies. That was more than enough for the highest mission evaluation.
Autumn nodded obediently.
Throughout the mission, she'd followed Vincent's lead in everything. If he said rest, she would rest.
After dinner, with nothing else to do, they both freshened up and got ready for bed.
The windows and doors were all sealed. If a zombie tried to break in, they would know immediately.
Inside the small room, there was only one tatami mat. Vincent slept on the outside, Autumn on the inside.
They'd been sleeping like this the whole time.
From the outside, their living arrangement didn't look much different from that of a married couple.
The only thing missing was that final step…
Not long after they lay down, Vincent felt Autumn scoot closer from behind and rest her head lightly against his shoulder.
"Vincent… do you think we'll ever get to live like this again?" she asked quietly.
Her voice was soft, with a hint of nervousness.
This was the first time Autumn Summer had ever initiated something so forward.
Vincent smiled.
"We will," he said gently, giving her a definite answer.
